It is unusually quiet in here and we even toy with the idea of ordering a pizza as the waiting time is advertised as just 20 minutes.

This pub has expanded into the premises next door since my last visit, more than doubling the inside seating area. This is just as well, as it is a bitterly cold evening and everybody wants to be inside.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Arbor Ales - Boomtown Brown5.30ExcellentArbor have turned their hand to a Brown Ale with their usual aplomb. Hoppy and spicy.

Just after lunchtime opening, pleasant airy but trendy atmosphere with plenty of bench seating to absorb customers, which consisted mainly of tattooed men with their hair in buns.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Crate - Session IPA3.60ExcellentFruity hit, mainly peach with an occasional blackcurrant twist. Delicious.

Mid-evening on a rainy day. It’s crowded in here, but not with the usual Hipsters and Big-Beards – more of a sporty throng. They’ve been doing something energetic in the Olympic Park and have a huge thirst for beer and hunger for pizza.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Salopian - Bullet Proof5.80ExcellentA strong, golden IPA.
Crate - American Nut Brown5.20ExcellentFrom a keg of some sort. Rich and dark and smooth.
Crate - Session IPA3.60GoodThe cask was misbehaving in some way and the beer foaming and spluttering. Golden in colour, it felt a bit battered by the time a glassful had been squeezed out. Good hoppy tastes though.
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - McConnel's5.00Not Tried

27 Apr 2017 (Stephen Harris)
Early evening – drizzly and cool. Busy inside, but plenty of space at the outside tables. I note that beer has become rather expensive here.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Crate - Rye5.50AcceptableA nice rye twang, but not as full-bodied as I recall this beer usually to be.

05 Mar 2017 (Stephen Harris)
A rainy late afternoon and the Sunday crowds are a bit thinner than usual. I even found a place to sit. My first visit here this year, so this becomes number 21 on my 2017 tour of London breweries and brewery taps.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Crate - Lemon Gose4.40ExcellentOn keg dispense. Golden. Sharp, sour, salty and lemony.

Wet weather means most of the Friday night crowds are staying away.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Crate - Double IPA9.90ExcellentOn keg dispense – brewed in collaboration with Howling Hops. Very powerful stuff.
Crate - Rye5.50GoodA full-on rye flavour.

Early evening – just as the crowds were starting to build up. I sat on one of the outside tables in the yard at the rear, for a change.

Early evening after a stroll around the Olympic Park in pleasant weather. Inevitably, it is packed in here.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Crate - German Pale Ale3.80GoodVery pale in colour. The presence of (presumably) German hops give this flavoursome beer a Lager-like quality.
Salopian - Oracle4.00Not Tried
Salopian - Darwin's Origin4.30Not Tried

14 Apr 2016 (Stephen Harris)
Fairly quiet in the late afternoon and the weather nice enough to sit outside.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Crate - American Pale Ale4.30ExcellentAmber-coloured and bang on style.
Crate - Black IPA7.20ExcellentOn keg dispense. A fabulous, strong, Black IPA with a big hop hit and a very firm malt base. Probably my favourite beer style and this is amongst the best I have tried. Pushing five stars, but this pint just held back by an unwanted carbonation.
Saltaire - Hop #2565.00GoodAmber-coloured and hoppy. Very bitter finish.

The pub is found in Hackney, Greater London, E9 5EN.

Hackney Wick has seen a transformation from grim area of industrial units to thriving ‘creative’ quarter. Only problem is, all the traditional pubs had closed down. The Crate Brewery was established in July 2012 in a former industrial premises and is a combination of brewpub and pizza restaurant, although with a predominately ‘pub’ feel. There is a large, high-ceilinged room and outside seating (some in boats) beside the canal. Initially the five-barrel brewery kit was visible in a room alongside, but in July 2013 the brewery moved to larger premises nearby. Inside, the furniture is made of recycled packing cases and pallets. It stands literally at the gate of the Olympic Park.

We have visited this pub 58 times, seen 103 different beers and tried 61 of them.
