Relatively quiet in here, to the extent that I was able to get a seat inside.
Crate - Rye | 5.50 | | Brown in colour. Smooth and strong. Rye flavours subdued at start, but developed over the course of the pint. |
Vocation - Chop & Change Topaz | 4.50 | | A golden beer that took a long time to clear. Bitter and fruity hop tastes. |
Oakham - Citra | 4.20 | Not Tried
Crate - Pale Ale | 4.50 | Not Tried
Crate - Porter | 4.10 | Not Tried

Crowded and loud in the mid-evening, but the DJ’s music choice was more to my liking that at Howling Hops next door.
Crate - Night Jar | 9.20 | | On keg dispense. In the style of a Belgian Triple and very good. Expensive, but in a good cause; part of the proceeds helping to provide shelter for the unfortunate migrants/refugees in Calais. |
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Late Star | 5.00 | | A rather ordinary, golden-brown Bitter. may not have been at its best here. |
Moor - Revival (was 3.8%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Oakham - Green Devil IPA | 6.00 | Not Tried
Crate - Rye | 5.50 | Not Tried

All too brief a time standing out by the canal before setting off as a group to watch football at Brisbane Road. Less busy here than I’m used to. Three Moor beers were also available but I forget which ones.
Crate - Pale Ale | 4.50 | | I enjoyed this fresh-tasting Pale Ale. |
Crate - Golden Ale | 3.80 | Not Tried
04 Sep 2015 (Stephen Harris)
As ever, it is packed out here tonight.
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Hippocrates' Purge | 4.50 | | I drank a rather mediocre honey beer the other day – this is the opposite end of the scale. Nice, subtle honey flavours, enhanced by orange blossom and elderflower. |
Crate - Golden Ale | 3.80 | Not Tried
Crate - Rye | 5.50 | Not Tried
Rooster's - Blind Jack | 3.70 | Not Tried
18 Jun 2015 (Stephen Harris)
Six deep at the bar here in the mid-evening, but efficient staff are dealing quickly with the masses. Unusually, there is only one cask beer available tonight.
Crate - Sour | 5.30 | | On keg dispense. Sour it certainly is, but I was disappointed by Crate’s first entry into the popular sour category. The beer is a little unsophisticated. It tastes like a base beer ready to be blended, or aged, or to have fruit, spices or hops added (maybe all of that is going to happen). A pint was almost too much – in fact it was for Robert and some of his was used to top up the canal. |
Crate - Rye | 5.50 | Not Tried
10 Jun 2015 (Stephen Harris)
Early evening. A chill wind is blowing along the canal, so the tables at the front are shunned and instead everybody is out the back in the yard. Disappointingly I have missed the new Citra Pale Ale, which has run out.
Crate - Pale Ale | 4.50 | | A hazy golden colour, fruity and a bit yeasty. |
Moor - Nor'Hop | 4.10 | Not Tried
Crate - Golden Ale | 3.80 | Not Tried
Crate - Rye | 5.50 | Not Tried

Pub at its best – a warm Sunday evening with crowds of people sat outside, a variety of ramshackle craft moving on the canal to watch, and plenty of staff to keep the beer queue moving.
Crate - Porter | 4.10 | | Currently my favourite of the range. |
Crate - Best | 4.30 | Not Tried
Siren Craft - Liquid Mistress Red IPA | 5.80 | Not Tried
Crate - Rye | 5.50 | Not Tried
15 Mar 2015 (Stephen Harris)
Relatively quiet at around 1pm and I managed to find somewhere inside to sit. Rain seemed to be putting off some of the passing trade here.
Crate - Porter | 4.10 | | Enjoyable pint. |
Hogs Back - Tongham TEA (previously T.E.A.) | 4.20 | Not Tried
Crate - Golden Ale | 3.80 | Not Tried
Crate - Best | 4.30 | Not Tried
Crate - Rye | 5.50 | Not Tried
11 Jan 2015 (Stephen Harris)
At 2pm we are ahead of many here, although it is becoming noticeably busier throughout our time at the bar.
Crate - Porter | 4.10 | | I again very much enjoy this new-ish porter. |
Crate - Golden Ale | 3.80 | Not Tried
Crate - Best | 4.30 | Not Tried
Crate - Pale Ale | 4.50 | Not Tried
13 Jul 2014 (Stephen Harris)
Early evening visit in warm sunshine. Crowded. It looks like the aftermath of a beards and tattoos convention, but this is just everyday life in Hackney Wick.
Summer Wine (SWB) - Cherokee Golden Ale | 4.20 | | Hand-written pumpclip says ‘Pale’ rather than ‘Golden’ Ale – not sure if this is a different beer? Tasty, golden, US-style Pale Ale. |
Weltons - Old Harry | 5.20 | Not Tried
Crate - IPA | 5.80 | Not Tried
Crate - Pale Ale | 4.50 | Not Tried
