Early Sunday lunchtime visit, just before the crowds begin to build up. I have walked past here on a couple of recent Sundays in the late afternoon, when the place has been packed.

Additional outdoor seating has been installed since I was last here, and it’s pretty much all in use late on Sunday afternoon, despite the drizzle.

Crate - Nøgne Ø Collaboration Beer5.00ExcellentI was surprised to find this beer still available, having missed the collaboration event itself by about three weeks. Golden. Both bitter and fruity.

I actually came in here twice tonight, either side of attending the launch party at nearby Truman’s. By the second visit it was quite late and the place was pretty lively and loud. They were happy to receive from me their 2014 GBG sticker and associated bumph.

Strictly speaking, this is no longer a brew-pub, as the Crate Brewery has moved to larger premises around the corner. Very busy in the late afternoon, with a one hour wait for pizzas. Opening of the northern section of the Olympic Park means this pub is now just a 15 minute stroll from Stratford International station.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Five Points - Five Points Pale4.40ExcellentAmber/gold. Very robustly hopped.
Crate - Best4.30GoodA richly malty best bitter.

About 12:30 and already quite busy. We were given details of plans to expand the brewing side of the operation, and given a chance to see the existing brewing equipment.

Not overcrowded on a Friday evening, and I managed to find a corner of the bar to lean on.

My real afternoon destination, after being waylaid earlier at the Grapes. Crowded here, inside and outside in the warm sunshine. Three deep at the bar to get served. But worth the effort.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Crate - IPA5.80ExcellentExcellent, fruity homebrew.
Five Points - Hook Island Red6.00ExcellentA tasty red beer, brewed just up the road.

It’s a bit chilly outside, but there is no room inside so we sit out by the canal and devour some pizzas.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Partizan - Saison Traditional Spiced6.10ExcellentA bottled beer. Darker in colour than the Grizette. Sour and spicy.
Crate - Golden Citra3.60GoodA variation on the usual Crate Golden, using Citra hops, which gives it an extra dimension. Perhaps not yet quite hitting the heights some have attained with this hop.
Partizan - Saison Grizette4.80GoodA bottled beer. Pale, cloudy and a little bit sour.

The pub is found in Hackney, Greater London, E9 5EN.

Hackney Wick has seen a transformation from grim area of industrial units to thriving ‘creative’ quarter. Only problem is, all the traditional pubs had closed down. The Crate Brewery was established in July 2012 in a former industrial premises and is a combination of brewpub and pizza restaurant, although with a predominately ‘pub’ feel. There is a large, high-ceilinged room and outside seating (some in boats) beside the canal. Initially the five-barrel brewery kit was visible in a room alongside, but in July 2013 the brewery moved to larger premises nearby. Inside, the furniture is made of recycled packing cases and pallets. It stands literally at the gate of the Olympic Park.

We have visited this pub 58 times, seen 103 different beers and tried 61 of them.
