Busy, early evening session. I have lost my notes of the other beers available.
Cromarty - Hit The Lip | 3.80 | | Golden/blond, session-strength beer full of juicy, fruity hops. |
07 Nov 2013 (Stephen Harris)
Thursday evening in the City and the City Boys are out in force. I joined Ted and Dave at the bar to form a little suit-free zone.
Burning Sky - Saison l’Autumn | 4.20 | | My first tasting of this much-heralded new Sussex brewery. Here on key-keg dispense, and beautifully brewery-fresh. Pale and cloudy, a bit spicy and flavoured with foraged rose hips. Classy stuff. |
Tiny Rebel - Flux | 4.00 | | Described as a Black Pale Ale. It was certainly black. |
Mallinsons - SPA (Special Pale Ale) | 4.00 | | Has the standard Mallinson’s pale and hoppy character; but something not quite right about this pint, and I couldn’t work out if it was the flavour or the condition. |
Redemption - Pale Ale | 3.80 | Not Tried
Redemption - Fellowship Porter | 5.10 | Not Tried
Buxton - Moor Top | 3.60 | Not Tried
Adnams - Topaz Gold | 4.00 | Not Tried
23 Oct 2013 (Philip Pirrip)
Early evening. Crowded inside and outside too in the street with customers making most of the balmy late October climate.
Redemption - Big Chief | 5.50
Adnams - Southwold Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried
Grain - Porter | 5.00 | Not Tried
Ilkley - Joshua Jane | 3.70 | Not Tried
Bristol Beer Factory - Bitter Kiwi | 5.00 | Not Tried
22 Oct 2013 (Stephen Harris)
I came here by bus 17 from Kings Cross through the early evening rush hour. Remind me not to do that again – it was debateable whether it would have been quicker to walk.
Grain - Porter | 5.00 | | Thick, black, roasty and creamy. |
Adnams - Southwold Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried
Redemption - Big Chief | 5.50 | Not Tried
Moor - Nor'Hop | 4.10 | Not Tried
Ilkley - Joshua Jane | 3.70 | Not Tried
Bristol Beer Factory - Bitter Kiwi | 5.00 | Not Tried
30 Sep 2013 (Stephen Harris)
Just a very small number of customers, mid-evening on a Monday.
Kernel (The Kernel) - Pale Ale – Amarillo Chinook Nugget | 5.40 | | On key-keg dispense. Golden in colour. Quite a lot of natural carbonation in this one. Satisfyingly hoppy as you would expect from this superb brewery. |
Arbor Ales - Motueka | 3.80 | | Amber in colour. A pretty good, single hop beer with a nice flavour. Personally I’d welcome a little more strength and body in this sort of beer. |
Marble - Pint (was 3.9%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
East London (ELB) - Nightwatchman | 4.50 | Not Tried
Tiny Rebel - FUBAR | 4.40 | Not Tried
Moor - So'Hop | 4.10 | Not Tried
12 Sep 2013 (Stephen Harris)
The busiest I have seen this pub so far, and it becomes a bit of a noisy and echoey place when full of people – some soft furnishings needed I think.
Kernel (The Kernel) - IPA Galaxy HBC 291 | 7.10 | | On keg dispense. As expected from The Kernel, this is a powerful, cloudy, golden beer with strong hop flavours. Initially fruity, it has a long bitter finish. |
Hopcraft (experimental side of Pixie Spring) - Redneck | 4.80 | | Dark red in colour. Some sweetish malt, but dominated by powerful hop tastes. I like my hops, but I found this one just a little bit harsh. |
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Craven Silk | 4.00 | Not Tried
Magic Rock - Curious | 3.90 | Not Tried
Moor - Nor'Hop | 4.10 | Not Tried
19 Aug 2013 (Philip Pirrip)
Early evening. Lots of empty space. More drinking wine than beer.
Moor - Nor'Hop | 4.10 | | Bit boring quite frankly |
Buxton - Buxton Spa | 4.10 | Not Tried
Bristol Beer Factory - Bitter Californian | 4.50 | Not Tried
Magic Rock - Carnival | 4.30 | Not Tried
Buxton - Buxton Gold | 5.20 | Not Tried
Adnams - Fat Sprat | 3.80 | Not Tried
07 Aug 2013 (Stephen Harris)
Early evening visit with Colin. Not very busy.
Pixie Spring - Tidy Bitter | 4.00 | | Decent amber bitter with plenty of hops. |
Magic Rock - High Wire | 5.50 | Not Tried
Bristol Beer Factory - Acer | 3.80 | Not Tried
Moor - Nor'Hop | 4.10 | Not Tried
Magic Rock - Carnival | 4.30 | Not Tried
Adnams - Topaz Gold | 4.00 | Not Tried
04 Jul 2013 (Stephen Harris)
Dave R and I have had an enjoyable early evening at the City Beerfest in Guildhall Yard (exchanging “good evenings” with the Lord Mayor Of London, as you do). Dave hasn’t been to the Pelt Trader yet, so we move on for a couple of pints. Quite busy at 8:30, and it is once again permitted to stand outside.
Buxton - Moor Top | 3.60 | | Pale and hoppy and citrusy. |
Bristol Beer Factory - Acer | 3.80 | | Amber, dry and bitter. |
Bristol Beer Factory - Milk Stout | 4.50 | Not Tried
Bristol Beer Factory - Independence | 4.60 | Not Tried
Adnams - Fat Sprat | 3.80 | Not Tried

It has been a short honeymoon period for this pub. I’m here in the peak after-work period of 6:15 – 7:15 (admittedly on the quietest day of the working week) and there are never more than six other customers present. Trade needs to be built.
Bristol Beer Factory - Independence | 4.60 | | Amber-coloured. Excellent US hop flavours. |
Kernel (The Kernel) - Pale Ale - Citra Galaxy | 5.10 | | On keg dispense. There are three words in this beer’s name which more or less guarantee excellence: ‘Kernel’, ‘Citra’ and ‘Galaxy’. It has a lovely, slightly tart, lemony, citrus flavour. But it has too much carbonation. I thought The Kernel only supplied in key-kegs, but this suggests an older technology in use on this occasion. |
Bristol Beer Factory - Milk Stout | 4.50 | Not Tried
Moor - Nor'Hop | 4.10 | Not Tried
Adnams - Fat Sprat | 3.80 | Not Tried
