18 Oct 2018 (Stephen Harris)
Brief visit at the height of the rush hour crush when the pub is loud and a bit echoey.
Five Points - Green Hop Fuggles | 3.70 | | Hazy gold. Peppery hop flavours. |
Harvey's - Sussex Best Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried
Redemption - Trinity | 3.00 | Not Tried
Redemption - Big Chief | 5.50 | Not Tried
Siren Craft - Yu Lu | 3.60 | Not Tried
10 Sep 2018 (Stephen Harris)
Early evening before the rush. Gloomy. A torch would have helped in seeing the beer names.
Adnams - Two Bays | 4.40 | | A collaboration beer with Cigar City. Crisp, pale, dry, bitter. A bit of wood, some citrus. |
Harvey's - Sussex Best Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried
Redemption - Trinity | 3.00 | Not Tried
Moor - PMA (Pale Modern Ale) | 5.30 | Not Tried | PMA also stands for Positive Mental Attitude, with an associated charity donation. |
Shiny - Happy People | 4.20 | Not Tried
22 Jun 2018 (Philip Pirrip)
Mid evening visit. Quite serendipitous encounter with an old work colleague and top drinking man. 2 cask ales only as runs down the range for weekend closure.
Big Smoke - Solaris Session Pale | 3.80
Big Smoke - Underworld Milk Stout | 5.00 | | Heavily flavoured |
22 Aug 2017 (Stephen Harris)
A spur of the moment, late-afternoon visit as I was passing. Here ahead of the crowds.
Kent - The New Black | 4.80 | | A well-flavoured, black-coloured beer; bafflingly described as a Pale Ale. |
Harvey's - Sussex Best Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Jaipur | 5.90 | Not Tried
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Wild Swan (was 3.5%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Dark Star - Hylder Blonde | 4.20 | Not Tried
Kent - Session Pale | 3.70 | Not Tried
16 Jan 2017 (Stephen Harris)
Early evening. An attempt seems to have been made to improve the acoustics in here. I had my fingers burnt ordering what I thought was a cask beer and finding that it was not – some sort of better labelling of the beer choices is needed I think.
London Brewing Co. - 100 Oysters Stout | 4.60 | | Black and creamy and quite dry. |
Twickenham (also uses sub-brand Old Hands) - Old Hands Session IPA | 4.70 | | Although this had appeared to be a cask beer, it was served very cold and highly carbonated. It’s an oddity. Much darker than any other Session IPA I have seen, and very cloudy. Hoppy-fruity and caramel flavours. |
Harvey's - Sussex Best Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried
Adnams - Old Ale | 4.10 | Not Tried
Twickenham (also uses sub-brand Old Hands) - Summer Down Under | 3.90 | Not Tried
Big Smoke - Solaris Session Pale | 3.80 | Not Tried
Big Smoke - Electric Eye | 5.50 | Not Tried
12 Dec 2016 (Stephen Harris)
I’m pleased to find a pub that has not a hint of the modern Christmas about it. No drunken office parties, no silly jumpers, no tinsel and no second rate pop songs. Just good beer, pizza and conversation. Then they tell me the tinsel is going up tomorrow. Ho hum.
Downlands (formerly South Downs) - Old | 4.60 | | A proper Old Ale. Near black in colour, ever so slightly tart and plenty of chocolate malt. A good Sussex winter tradition. |
Fourpure - Accumulation | 6.30 | | On key-keg dispense. Pleased to see this here after enjoying a visit to Fourpure Brewery last week. It’s another little cracker, full of beautiful, fruity, US West Coast hop flavours. Pretty close to five stars actually. |
Pig & Porter - Thief of Time | 4.80 | | A dark brown Porter. |
Harvey's - Sussex Best Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried
Dark Star - American Pale Ale (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 4.70 | Not Tried
Oakham - Oblivion | 5.70 | Not Tried
Pig & Porter - Ashburnham Pale Ale | 3.80 | Not Tried
04 Oct 2016 (Stephen Harris)
Quite busy but not as loud and echoey as usual. Don’t know what they have done – perhaps it was just that so many people were busy eating pizzas rather than shouting about City stuff.
Shiny - Disco Balls | 5.30 | | Golden. An excellent, full-bodied IPA. |
Acorn - Yorkshire Pride | 3.70 | | Very pale gold. Dry. |
Harvey's - Old Ale (or Sussex XXXX Old Ale) | 4.30 | Not Tried
Siren Craft - Sound Wave | 5.60 | Not Tried
Burning Sky - Plateau (was 3.5%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Shiny - Pail (Comet, Pekko) | 4.00 | Not Tried
18 Aug 2016 (Stephen Harris)
Thursday night in the City of London, so jam-packed full and spilling in all directions along the street.
Burning Sky - Plateau (was 3.5%) | 3.40 | | A superb pint. Perhaps I should give 5 stars? |
Harvey's - Sussex Best Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Dark Star - Hylder Blonde | 4.20 | Not Tried
Twickenham (also uses sub-brand Old Hands) - Summer Sun | 4.40 | Not Tried
Titanic - White Star | 4.50 | Not Tried
25 Nov 2015 (Stephen Harris)
Early evening. Busier than I have seen it here before, hot and noisy.
Hastings - Slovenian Brown Ale | 6.00 | | Dark brown in colour. Initial taste is sweetish, but becomes dominated by alcohol and relatively subtle hops. |
Kent - Cobnut | 4.10 | Not Tried
Kent - Beyond the Pale | 5.40 | Not Tried
Bristol Beer Factory - Nova | 3.80 | Not Tried
Burning Sky - Aurora | 5.60 | Not Tried
Burning Sky - Plateau (was 3.5%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
30 Sep 2015 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening. Keg fizz beers here are at a £2 - £2.40 pp premium to cask for the well-walleted, yet for an inferior but cleverly placed product.
Burning Sky - Plateau (was 3.5%) | 3.40
Fyne - Highlander | 4.80 | Not Tried
Fyne - Jarl | 3.80 | Not Tried
Shiny - Silver Man | 4.00 | Not Tried
