A flying visit, just to catch the last ten minutes of the Liverpool v PSG match here on TV. A good crowd in to watch it.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Three Sods - SeSsiON IPA4.40GoodGolden and more malty than I had remembered it.
Sharp's - Doom Bar4.00Not Tried
Signature Brew - Backstage IPA5.60Not Tried

A comfort break stop on the way home that developed into a couple of pints. Pub surprisingly busy at 10:30pm. No escaping the conclusion that there was a much better atmosphere and tastier beer here than at two City pubs visited earlier.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Signature Brew - Solo: Hallertau Blanc5.00Excellent- A really good showcase for this relatively subtle and unchallenging hop variety.
Purity - Pure Gold3.80Not Tried

Fairly late in the evening for a quick one.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Signature Brew - Solo: Azacca5.00ExcellentA golden, single hop beer. Perfect condition really emphasises the hop character.
Titanic - Plum Porter4.90Not Tried

I had decided to eat here and discovered that Sunday evening is the one session of the week when the kitchen is closed. Probably explains why it is my favourite time to come here – quiet and peaceful.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Signature Brew - Solo: Azacca5.00GoodClear gold in colour. Good hop flavours but spoiled a bit by warm temperature.
Titanic - Plum Porter4.90Not Tried

Late evening visit. Pub quiet.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Titanic - Plum Porter4.90ExcellentFaultless.
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Scorcher4.20AcceptableGolden in colour and supposedly a ‘grapefruit edition’, although challenging hop flavours are a bit difficult to spot.
26 Jun 2018 (Stephen Harris)
Late-evening visit on the way home from a day in Brussels.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Two Halves4.20ExcellentA really nice, fruity, golden, Session IPA. Probably contains Truman’s entire hop budget for the summer of 2018.
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Zephyr4.40AcceptableTasted a little bit rough tonight.
East London (ELB) - Pale Ale4.00Not Tried

Pit-stop visit at the end of a long weekend. Staff now give me a CAMRA discount here unprompted.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Big Penny (formerly Truman's) as of late 2022 contract brewed - Zephyr4.40ExcellentA big smack of hops. Still Truman’s best beer in my opinion.
Signature Brew - Roadie - All-Night IPA4.30Not Tried

Mid-evening and it is almost empty in here. A neighbour of mine recognises me and we reminisce about the rough old days of the King Harold pub. Apparently it was very busy here earlier, and there is only one cask beer left.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hammerton - N75.20ExcellentThis is on tip-top form and I linger for a couple.
02 May 2018 (Stephen Harris)
In twenty-five years of occasional usage of this pub I have never seen it so crowded as it was tonight during the televised Roma v Liverpool match. I had no idea there were so many Scousers living in Leyton.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Wild Beer Co. - Bibble4.20AcceptableA very tired pint – on its last legs I suspect.
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's)3.40Not Tried

The pub is found in Leyton, Greater London, E15 2BX.

This pub was established in 1887 as the King Harold, replacing the former Grenadier, which had stood further north in Leyton. It was a Savill Brothers pub (the local brewery at the time), eventually passing to Charrington’s. By the turn of the twenty-first century this pub had acquired an exceedingly seedy reputation. To nobody’s surprise, it eventually closed in 2015, but re-opened in July 2016 as the Leyton Star, much refurbished and beautified. It occupies a street corner position, close to Leyton tube station. A large single bar with an upstairs function room (formerly used as a gym). Rear garden. Four handpumps on the bar. CAMRA discount available.

We have visited this pub 74 times, seen 75 different beers and tried 52 of them.
