Builders' time on the shortest day of the year.I met an old friend on the street outside:we had to go in for a quick pint.
Old Dairy (being contract brewed after it closed) - Copper Top | 4.10 | | Good example of this rich autumnal copper coloured ale. Smokey malt and crisp hops. |
Wadworth - 6X | 4.10 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
25 Sep 2012 (Wittenden)
Quiet on a thundery Tuesday evening. I called in to make arrangements for our family Christmas. I know-too early!
Old Dairy (being contract brewed after it closed) - Sun Top | 3.60 | | Delectable ultra pale ale.Floral, melons.Made me think of Fremlins for some reason: had that indefinable quality that describes great beer. |
Kent - Cobnut | 4.10 | | Austere:nutty with sharp hops.I think this was past its best, but unfortunately I've never had a beer from this brewery that I've really enjoyed. |
07 Dec 2011 (Wittenden)
Early on a windy December evening.Several friendly faces. The original public bar, lately a restaurant, is once more a public bar as it should be.
Wadworth - Henry's Original IPA | 3.60 | | Decent malty session light bitter: bit of floral hop. |
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
19 Jun 2011 (Wittenden)
Quiet on a late Sunday afternoon.
Black Sheep - Best Bitter | 3.80 | | Fresh and precise. Not my favourite beer, but in good form. |
Wadworth - Henry's Original IPA | 3.60 | | A bit on the cloudy side, but a pleasant change-a good malt base developing an almost floral quality. Not my idea of an IPA, though! |
Brains - Hancock's HB | 3.60 | Not Tried
02 Oct 2010 (Wittenden)
In this pub two days running-is this a record? Filling up well on a wet Saturday night.
Brains - Hancock's HB | 3.60 | | Mid brown nutty bitter, a bit too sweet for me, but with a prolonged hoppy finish. |
Black Sheep - Best Bitter | 3.80 | | It pains me to admit it, but this would taste better a) in Yorkshire, b) through a sparkler:the beer seemed muddled, and not as crisp as I remember it. |
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried
01 Oct 2010 (Wittenden)
Late afternoon on a wet Friday:a few usual suspects rolled in.
Shepherd Neame - Canterbury Jack | 3.50 | | In good nick, but all I could taste was ginger. Not my cup of tea, I'm afraid. |
Black Sheep - Best Bitter | 3.80 | Not Tried
21 Mar 2009 (Wittenden)
The pub seems to be thriving under new ownership.Probably food oriented, but there's a good local trade.
Hydes - 1863 Classic Bitter | 3.50 | | Is it a light mild, is it a bitter?I dunno, but I enjoyed it, and could well have made it a session. An initial pronounced hop effect, which rapidly was replaced by a mellow fruitiness. Mid brown . Yes, I suppose I could place it alongside Courage's PBA, drunk in this very pub too many years ago. |
Wadworth - Henry's Original IPA | 3.60 | Not Tried
Adnams - Southwold Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried
