03 Jan 2011 (Ray)
Buzz of conversation. Both beers were served too cold.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Fyne - Sublime Stout6.80ExcellentSparkling dark ruby with tight dark beige head it looked great. Some hops and fruit on the nose leads to well proportioned flavours. Some fruit, hints of chocolate and liquorice against an top quality malt base. Satisfying long finish. Would have deserved 5* if served warmer. Had to wait 15 minutes for the beer to warm and its true quality appear.
Fyne - Piper's Gold3.80AcceptableLight and hoppy ale. Dry, fruity finish. Improved to 3.1/2* as it warmed.
Arran (formerly Isle of Arran) - Fireside4.70Not Tried
23 Dec 2010 (Ray)
Lots of snow outside but warm and welcoming at the bar.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Cairngorm - Winter Flurry3.80GoodGood spicy hops with smooth malt.
Kelburn - Ca'Canny5.20AcceptableNew cask of the mid-brown strong ale. Aroma and flavour dominated by coffee - no subtle flavours here. Very dry.
Deeside - Macbeth4.10PoorSurprising hints of a gueuze on the nose - almost as if they'd used a brettanomyce yeast - carried through to the limited flavour and a slightly harsh mouthfeel and finish.
11 Dec 2010 (McGargle)
Very busy and almost entirely with drinkers. Buzz of conversation filled the place. Just how a pub should be.
BeerABVScoreNotes
BrewDog - Punk IPA6.00ExcellentAt 6% the expression 'easy drinking' shouldn't apply but, in Punk IPA, the big mouthfeel is perfectly balanced by the well defined fruity hops and the the mellow finish.
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA3.80Not Tried
Timothy Taylor - Landlord4.30Not Tried
Fyne - Holly Daze5.00Not Tried
Deeside - Macbeth4.10Not TriedOnly took a sampler but the impression was of a beer that had lost its way. Uninspired malts and poorly defined hops left a 'what else?' feeling.

Haven't been in for a while. Good to see some friendly faces.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Cairngorm - Autumn Nuts3.80GoodAttractive reddish amber with nice tight head. Overly sweet from the crystal malt but good body. Interesting dark fruit flavours on the finish.

Both rooms packed solid. Deuchars, Landlord and Dunottar also available.

10 Oct 2010 (McGargle)
Very busy. Quick service if you could fight your way to the bar.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Burnside - Wild Rhino4.50ExcellentStraw coloured with long lasting white head. Intense light hops on the nose with lemon grass and grapefruit flavours balanced by firm malt. Long, dry fruit finish. Almost 5*.

Busy. Good to see an unusual guest from further afield.
BeerABVScoreNotes
1648 - Oak Ale4.00GoodAmber ale with the tell-tale of crystal malt. Low hopping and sharply bitter finish.
West Brewing - Hefeweizen5.20AcceptableCloudy wheat beer from a keg. Hints of orange and coriander. Rough edged finish.

24 Sep 2010 (McGargle)
One bar staff and lots of customers meant service was a bit erratic at times.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Tryst - Brewer's Swansong6.90AcceptableHow I wanted to like this beer - Google the name to find out why. It poured a hazy mid-brown with earthy aromas which carried through to the taste. Some hint of malt was overwhelmed by the alcohol leading to a slightly sweet finish. At this strength maybe it was really 2*.

Busy.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Deeside - Brude3.50AcceptableNot much going on in this lightweight, golden, summer ale. Improved as it 'breathed' warmed up. Probably 2* really.
Burnside - M-Pire5.20Not TriedI won't rate this as it was the bottom of the cask. Shouldn't have been served really. Hazy with floaters.
20 Aug 2010 (McGargle)
Mostly regulars.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Orkney (Sinclair) - Raven Ale3.80PoorLittle aroma. Thin with metallic hints mid-mouth. Unpleasant, slightly astringent finish. CBoB Bronze Award? Not on this form.
Orkney (Sinclair) - Red MacGregor4.00PoorThis was an odd one. No hints of summer fruits here just booming tannic aroma and flavours of red wine - strong autumn fruits. Think cheap Shiraz and you're close.
Timothy Taylor - Landlord4.30UndrinkableUllage. Willingly replaced but it shouldn't have left the bar in this condition.
