A pleasant welcome.
Stewart - Pentland IPA | 3.90 | | An acceptable beer served in pristine condition. Shone in the glass |

The Marine used to be a destination pub - a friendly welcome and six interesting and usually pristine cask beers. You are reminded of this by the impressive array of CAMRA POTY certificates and pump clips that adorn the walls.
Then you notice that the last CAMRA award was in 2013 and think that now there's, at best, three usually nondescript beers of highly variable quality served by staff for whom hospitality isn't a vocation.
The harbour wall, on a sunny evening, is still a major pull but what a shame that The Marine's great days are now a distant memory.
71 Brewing - Heavy Lifting | 3.90 | | The classic Scottish heavy revisited. |
Burnside - Flints Gold | 4.10 | Not Tried
01 Aug 2024 (McGargle)
Perfect sitting on the harbour wall.
Cromarty - Kowabunga | 4.60 | | Bitterer than I remember. |
Inveralmond - Lia Fail | 4.70 | Not Tried

Early evening and surprising busy. Staff do find it difficult to raise a smile.
Cromarty - Whiteout | 3.80 | | Probably as good as it gets. Happy and refreshing but a bit thin. |
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA | 3.80 | Not Tried
17 May 2024 (McGargle)
I'd pretty much given up The Marine as a destination pub. Too many nondescript beers with the odd one served in questionable condition. Then the Verdant turned up and on cask!
Verdant - Lamanva Best Bitter | 4.00 | | I have had more than enough ill defined hazy, juicy bangers or stouts that taste of anything but stout. Then this came along.
It's good to see our more adventurous brewers revisiting our brewing heritage and this was a classic Best Bitter. Prefectly served with a lasting head this was symphony of British hops and malt. If all cask reached these heights it wouldn't be in terminal decline. Might have to go back tonight. |
Harviestoun - Schiehallion | 4.80 | Not Tried
02 May 2024 (McGargle)
Very quiet on a sunny May evening. Could beer at £4.60 a pint, up from £3.40 at the turn of the year, be part of the reason?
Orkney (Sinclair) - Island Life | 3.70 | | Crystal clear session IPA , whatever that is. |
Inveralmond - Ossian | 4.10 | Not Tried
26 Feb 2024 (McGargle)
Queuing customers. Short staffed.
71 Brewing - Cloud Fall | 4.50 | | A rather thin APA. |
01 Feb 2024 (McGargle)
Quiet except for the background 'music'.
6DN Apex was sour bordering on 1*. Barman agreed it had a twang but kept it on sale.
Orkney (Sinclair) - Cliff Edge | 4.70 | | Nondescript pale ale on this showing. No hop character. Maybe 2*? |
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA | 3.80 | Not Tried | The old Caledonian Brewery is being 'disposed of' by Heineken. |
Stewart - Jack Back | 3.70 | Not Tried
24 Jan 2024 (McGargle)
No dog tonight. She's drying off after an enforced harbour swim. Well she shouldn't have rolled in fox p**!
Gatherum and Rodeo from 6DN.
Stewart - Jack Back | 3.70 | | Thin but nicely hopped pale ale. |
Stewart - Mosaic | 4.30 | Not Tried
