11 Dec 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Early evening visit soon after 5pm and the pub is rapidly filling up.
BeerABVScoreNotes
St. George's - White Dragon3.60GoodPale beer with a biscuity and toffee malt character, low hopping and some fruit in the finish. My score 15/20.
Allendale - North Sheep3.60AcceptableAmber bitter with a dry bitter flavour not from hops but malt, probably crystal or amber. Little body or balance to the beer with a dry astringent finish. My score 12/20.
27 Nov 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Very busy on a Tuesday evening and probably the last time the pub will be comfortable and usable for a month or so.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Sunny Republic - St Wite's Ale5.00GoodDark red ale with a toffee malt character and a little fruity hop. Unusually for me, the Belgian yeast gave a pleasantly tasting beer. My score 15/20.
Gower - Gower Gold4.50GoodGolden ale with a good balance of malt and hop. My score 15/20.
24 Nov 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Opening time at noon on a Saturday and the place soon fills up.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Saltaire - Tyke's Gold4.40ExcellentFull flavoured golden ale with good citrus hop character and malt balance. Clean, refreshing finish. My score 16/20.
Salamander - Blue Moon4.50ExcellentBlack stout with a full bodied roast malt flavour. Hints of coffee and dark chocolate leading to a dryish finish. My score 16/20.
Green Jack - Golden Best3.80AcceptablePale bitter without any dominating flavours. Slightly bitter and hoppy with a faint malt flavour. Dryish finish. My score 14/20.
19 Nov 2012 (Stephen Harris)
Crowded enough on a Monday early evening that I could not get near enough to the back bar to see the full range of beers available.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hop Vine (formerly Burscough) - Black Canon Stout4.50ExcellentBlack in colour, with a huge, frothy head. Roasty flavours, and chewy chocolate malt. Fresh tasting.
Sunny Republic - Dolphin4.20GoodBased on a 1920s recipe. Dark amber in colour and very malty, with caramel tastes.

BeerABVScoreNotes
Geltsdale - Black Dub3.60GoodBlack mild with a bittersweet malty flavour, low hoppiness and some fruit in the finish. My score 15/20.
03 Nov 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Very busy at the end of market day on a Saturday.
BeerABVScoreNotes
George Wright - Black Skull4.70AcceptableA black beer with something hot added, chilli maybe. Unfortunately this has the effect of masking any other flavours that might be in the beer. So probably some malt and hop in there but difficult to tell. My score 14/20.
22 Oct 2012 (Stephen Harris)
Just a brief, solo visit on the way home from work.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Box Steam - Ghost Train4.80GoodChestnut in colour. Full bodied, fruity and richly malty.
West Berkshire - Headlock4.10AcceptableA brown bitter. Rather ordinary I thought.

BeerABVScoreNotes
Salopian - Blackwater Loan Shark4.00ExcellentGood hoppy pale ale with citrus hop and good malt balance too. My score 16/20
Quartz - Brau5.20AcceptableLacking in flavour for its strength, not particularly hoppy and just a faint malty sweetness. Rather dry finish. My score 13/20.

The pub is found in Southwark, Central London, SE1 9AA.

Famous pub opposite Borough Market in Stoney Street. Central bar has many beers which change on a regular basis and are mostly from UK micros. Can be extremely busy. Refurbishment some time ago and now there is one main room with a side area with seating as well. Many customers use the pavement outside to stand and enjoy their drinks. Really a must for anyone taking in London pubs. Sports 12 handpumps with 6 in each of the 2 distinct bar serving areas plus a further 4 for cider dispense at the far rear. Upstairs restaurant bar area too, mainly for lunchtime use. In 2019 the real ale choice was drastically reduced to 4 and the cider was withdrawn. Downstairs toilets. Card payment only, cash not accepted here.

We have visited this pub 282 times, seen 813 different beers and tried 647 of them.
