14 Aug 2005 (Ian)
Came here three times over the day inbetween the cricket. Fairly empty actually for a Sunday. Most people are on holiday I think
Oakham - JHB | 3.80 | | Pale gold. Citrus nose, grapefruit mostly, no diacetyl unlike the pint we had on Friday in Maidstone. I can drink this till the cows come home. Soft/slightly creamy in mouth with drying very hoppy and very citric finish |
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Tiger | 4.20 | | Back to its best after a couple of ropey pints. Good blend of herby/earthy/flowery hops and straight up biscuity malt. Good smooth drinking best bitter with good balance and dry tangy hop finish |
Banks's - Ringwood Fortyniner | 4.90 | | Mid brown. Not sure what this should taste like as I haven't had it before but I am pretty sure it is not this. Earthy hops and some port aromas with slightly unpleasant strong ale flavour with some fruit. Need to have this someplace better |
10 Aug 2005 (Ian)
Fairly quiet on an early Wednesday evening. Typical Wetherspoons with the usual beer line up and a couple of guests
Badger (Hall & Woodhouse) - Tanglefoot (was 4.9%) | 4.70 | | Orange/brown colour. Malt/fruit on aroma, ok in mouth, just nothing much else. Maybe a touch of whiskey. Fine unassuming, bit of sweetness but finish is quite short |
Wadworth - Summersault | 4.00 | | Citrus almost sweaty socks aroma. Hops are ok and a bit of artificial lemon, but not that good |
07 Aug 2005 (Ian)
Oooh haven't been here for nearly a week! Fairly empty on a Sunday late afternoon and they had run out of sunday roast dinners. Usual range of Wetherspoon's beers plus 7 guests.
Batemans - XXXB (now superseded by 4.8% version) | 4.50 | | Dark reddish copper colour. Caramel runs through this beer with good malts and a lasting beige head. Lovely beer |
Marston's - Ashes Ale | 4.10 | | Copper colour, not a lot of aroma, some creamyness some peppery hop on finish, slight sulphur and some caramel, just needs a bit more flavour |
Skinner's (now brewed by Goodh) - Cornish Blonde | 5.00 | | Blond citrus hoppy some lemon, dry hop finish some banana. Badged as a wheat beer, but does not taste like its continental cousins |
Wild's - Wild Summer | 4.20 | Not Tried
Harviestoun - Schiehallion | 4.80 | Not Tried
Goffs - White Knight | 4.70 | Not Tried
Badger (Hall & Woodhouse) - Tanglefoot (was 4.9%) | 4.70 | Not Tried
31 Jul 2005 (Ian)
Sunday afternoon, not that busy. Here to get the last knockings of the Schiehallion. Usual line up along with Waggledance, White Knight, Grainstore Gold and Bishops Finger
Shepherd Neame - Bishops Finger | 5.00 | | Good dark fruit malty nose with Sheps yeast. Good in mouth with more fruity malts, some burntness. Fine, nice enough pint served well. |
Harviestoun - Schiehallion | 4.80 | | Tasted of tea, not very pleasant at all. Shame when it was so fantastic on the Thursday |
30 Jul 2005 (Ian)
Must really find a better pub to be my regular. However, as the Harviestoun was still on I had to go didn't I?
Harviestoun - Schiehallion | 4.80 | | Not as good as it was on Thursday evening, may have been going |
Goffs - White Knight | 4.70 | | Quite malty for a golden beer, pleasant enough, but I can't remember too much about it. |
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Young's Waggledance | 5.00 | | Amber colour, honey and malt nose, fullish in mouth but a tad too sweet for me, but with some bitter hop finish |
Butcombe - Blonde | 5.00 | Not Tried | Just going off as I was at the bar. Can't believe it went so quickly. It wasn't on Thursday evening and by Saturday early afternoon, it had gone |
Hop Back - Odyssey | 4.00 | Not Tried
Grainstore - Gold | 4.50 | Not Tried
28 Jul 2005 (Ian)
When I was here earlier in the week, I was hoping that one of the guests about to come on was a Harviestoun beer, and my prayers were answered with Schiehallion
Harviestoun - Schiehallion | 4.80 | | Not really a lager. Citrus sherbert aroma with carbonation and sherbert in the mouth with more citrus and berry fruit flavours leads to a dry nettle hop finish. Superb |
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Marston's - Burton Bitter | 3.80 | Not Tried
Marston's - Pedigree | 4.50 | Not Tried
Titanic - White Star (superseded by 4.5% version - see separate entry) | 4.80 | Not Tried
Hop Back - Odyssey | 4.00 | Not Tried
JW Lees (see also Lees) - Scorcher | 4.00 | Not Tried

Wetherspoon's. I am waiting for the two guest handpumps currently out of use, to be in use. They have the pump clips on reversed so you can't see what the beer coming on is, and it is driving me insane. I suppose I could just ask. Anyway one has the shape of a Hop Back beer and the other... well it's oval, could be Harviestoun or Oakham if I am really lucky. Anyway, usual usual beers on plus 3 guests
Exmoor - Gold | 4.50 | | Thought about this long and hard. OK so it does not have really distinctive flavours or aromas, but put the whole package together and you have an excellent beer. Good golden colour, white creamy head, good hops and malt, nice creamy feel in the mouth and well balanced well made sense leading to a hop and malt finish. The sum of the whole is greater than the parts. Ersatz? |
Titanic - White Star (superseded by 4.5% version - see separate entry) | 4.80 | Not Tried
JW Lees (see also Lees) - Scorcher | 4.00 | Not Tried
24 Jul 2005 (Ian)
Starting to fill up on an early Sunday lunchtime for this Wetherspoons as the sunday roast is very popular. German grand prix was on the LCD TV screens
Exmoor - Gold | 4.50 | | Golden beer with creamy white head. Good mix of malt and hop. Bit more malty than the rest of the gold summer citrus hoppy beers. |
20 Jul 2005 (Ian)
Yes its the only place in Ashford to get a quot;beer range varies.quot; Wetherspoons in lower High Street where I spend most of my free time
Oakleaf (now see Fallen Acorn entries) - Hole Hearted | 4.70 | | As before, lots of cascade hops make this excellent |
Batemans - Valiant | 4.30 | | Copper ale with apple and tea flavours, yeah alright |
JW Lees (see also Lees) - Scorcher | 4.00 | | Pale gold, bland drinkable summer ale with no real flavours |
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Marston's - Burton Bitter | 3.80 | Not Tried
Marston's - Pedigree | 4.50 | Not Tried
Camerons - Strongarm | 4.00 | Not Tried
Grainstore - Gold | 4.50 | Not Tried
Hardys & Hansons (see now and use Greene King for new entries) - Druid's Droop | 5.00 | Not Tried
17 Jul 2005 (Ian)
My weekend would not be complete without a visit here. Sunday late afternoon with the sun shining and a not too full pub, it was quite pleasant. Now has seating out the front of the pub, which is a good vantage point for people watching on the High Street
Oakleaf (now see Fallen Acorn entries) - Hole Hearted | 4.70 | | Copper coloured and has won Hampshire beer of the year a couple of times. Made only with cascade hops. Good hoppy aroma, slightly creamy in mouth with strawberries and raspberry malt flavours and a slight citrus herby hop taste. Good bitter citrus finish. Really tasty beer |
