Great pub but a pint of Incubus was £2.80! Stood at the bar watching the Jazz band with Ian. Groovy.
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | | Incubus alright but a bit tight (...a term that Ian doesn't understand) |
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried
Marston's - Bass | 4.40 | Not Tried
Grand Union - English Wheat Beer | 4.40 | Not Tried

Excellent 4 piece jazz band were on. Andrew and I were big fans of the drummer who seemed to be enjoying himself. Lovely building with a great walled in garden and 9 handpulls. Good pub
Grand Union - English Wheat Beer | 4.40 | | Hazy gold with lasting bubbly white head. Lemon, cereal aroma. Wheat aroma is quite dry. Hops on aroma too. Quite full in mouth and quite creamy and then excellent hop on end, bitter. Very rounded. Like an English hoppy bitter with wheat added. Hop on end is lovely. Very bitter. |
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | Not Tried | Had a sip of Andrew's. Nice fruity malt and good hop, but they weren't really integrated with each other. |
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | Not Tried
Marston's - Bass | 4.40 | Not Tried

Popped in here after the Thomas Ingoldsby to see if they had anything new on before catching the train home. And they did. Good outlet for Hog's Back and Nelson beers. And a lovely wooden interior and great beer garden too. Great location
Nelson - Rochester Bitter | 3.70 | | Gold, lasting off white head. Citric, thinnish summer session bitter. Hop is dusty, but got good lemony acid on finish. Bit of hay/grass aroma. Some grapefruit. Dusty session bitter. Fine |
Nelson - Hardy's Kiss | 4.20 | | Amber with lasting beige head. Yeasty, malty, fruity best bitter. Not sure all the parts go together well. All fighting with each other. Fine, but not as good as the Rochester Bitter. |
Marston's - Bass | 4.40 | Not Tried
Hogs Back - Hop Garden Gold | 4.40 | Not Tried

Pub no. 4 of the crawl. This place is quickly becoming my favourite pub for new beers to me in Canterbury. Not every handpull is always used (there are 9 at the last count) but there's normally something good to pick up. Last couple of times I've been in, there have been beers from Hog's Back and Nelson. Lovely building with lots of exposed orginal wood and red brick. Classical music played on this visit.
Grand Union - IPA | 5.30 | | Copper colour with bubbly ivory colour head. Strong hop aroma, something American perhaps. Malts need to be stronger in mouth before an attack of citrus, intense hop on end. Grapefruit. Needs more malt structure. Hops seem lost without it. And served too cold too. Apart from that its tasty hoppy strong beer. Alcohol doesn't distort it. Hop finish would be stunning if underpinned by stronger malts. |
Nelson - Dover Patrol | 5.50 | | Deep brown with lasting beige head. After warming it up in my hands, this release a malty, red berry, dry malt beer. Rich malt aroma. Dry hoppy finish. Wears its strength well. Good strong beer |
Hogs Back - Spring Call | 4.00 | | Gold/blonde beer with lasting thick whte head. Last half out of the barrel. Bit of stale malt leads to refreshing syrupy concentrated citrus of the lemon curd variety. Would be good on top form in summer. Saaz hops perhaps on the aroma? |
Hogs Back - Hair of the Hog | 3.50 | | Copper colour, sparse white head. Eggy aroma. Had this at the Red Lion in Snargate and it was excellent. This wasn't |

Although a very pretty and quaint building, I have never been a big fan of this pub. However, this visit changed my mind. Low ceiling with original wooden beams, bare stripped floorboards with wooden chairs and tables and low level lighting. 9 handpulls are not always used, but this time all had beers, 8 real ales and Biddenden cider.
Weltons - Hogspudding | 5.60 | | Chestnut colour with thick beige head. Spiced malty nose. Lots more spice inmouth with dry malt. Finish had dryness. Full in mouth. Dry malt rather than rich. Some juicyness towards the end. Some milk choc and some sweet strawberry fruit/malt mix is pretty good. Nice balance flavours, spicy but after initial hit, it dies down a bit. Good winter beer. Spice needs a bit more integration |
Weltons - Elephant Stout | 4.90 | | Ruby brown colour with bubbly beige head. Dark fruit, blackcurrant aroma and choc. Good in mouth with more blackcurrant/berry. On of the fruitier stouts. Not very stout like in fact, more of a fruit beer |
Nelson - Jingle Ale | 3.80 | | Deep copper, disappearing off white head. Quite nice fragrant hop on this. Served too cold. Good hops, citric tasty but fragrant. Lemon. Some pale malt undercurrent. Drying hop finish. Some juicy malt. Quite like it. Good juicy fruit, just too cold |
Weltons - Wenceslegless | 4.60 | | Copper/amber colour with thick beige lasting head. Rich red fruit aroma. Rich creamy red fruit, raspberry, redcurrant in mouth. Juicy with good malt hop finish. Good hop/malt balance throughout from aroma to finish. Some yeast on nose. Smooth, easy drinking. |
Weltons - Hoppy Christmas | 3.70 | | Deep copper with thin off white head. Earthy hop aroma, sharp hop flavour in mouth with apple/pear fruit flavours. Drying hop finish. bit over done. Just a tad too sharp for winter, but a good palate cleanser. Slightly eggy aroma too. |
Nelson - Friggin Yuletide | 5.50 | | Chestnut bubbly thin beige head. Rich malt and malt fruit nose, but you know that flavours will be a little thin in the mouth and they are. Bit wet in mouth with sweetish cherry fruit kicking in and some citric finishing hop. More cherry/green apple fruits. Not enough malt and body. Cherry flavours are nice though |
Theakston - Old Peculier | 5.60 | Not Tried
11 Dec 2005 (Brian)
Popped in for one after the Xmas shopping. Quite quiet for a Sunday afternoon, roaring log fire and good selection of ales.
Theakston - Old Peculier | 5.60 | | A bit cold to begin with, but soon the roasted malt came through with a slight sweetness at the end. |
Hogs Back - Tongham TEA (previously T.E.A.) | 4.20 | Not Tried
Archers - Black Jack Porter | 4.60 | Not Tried
09 Jul 2005 (Ian)
Again with Andrew, early Saturday evening. Lots of beer engines on the bar, but only 3 beers on which is a shame. As a pub it is lovely with lots of original old timbers in the bar and an excellent walled garden.
Joseph Holt (see also Holt's) - Humdinger | 3.50 | | Bit herby and a bit sweet, not sure if it was supposed to be made with honey |
Marston's - Bass | 4.40 | Not Tried
09 Jul 2005 (Andrew)
The inside was nearly empty with everyone in the shaded courtyard garden.
Joseph Holt (see also Holt's) - Humdinger | 3.50 | | Funny tasting beer. Nothing wrong with how it was served (I think) but just a weird tasting beer |
Marston's - Bass | 4.40 | Not Tried
