Visits Details
30 Dec 2014 (McGargle)
Pleasantly busy. Good service as always.
Adnams - Sixpoint Importer | 4.20 | | Pleasant and easy drinking but a bit muted for a porter. |
19 Dec 2014 (McGargle)
Twelve pumps but nothing of even remote interest. A good evening nontheless with Lagunitas, Rogue and Sixpoint.
06 Dec 2014 (McGargle)
With plenty of staff service was quick and pleasant.
Salopian - Hollybush Winter Ale | 5.50 | | The smoothness had been replaced by a rougher, almost leathery, feel. With lowish hopping the beer suffered. |
04 Dec 2014 (McGargle)
Busy. Mostly drinkers.
Salopian - Hollybush Winter Ale | 5.50 | | Described as an ESB I thought it more a black IPA with a restrained hop profile. Very smooth, very drinkable. |
20 Nov 2014 (McGargle)
Busy but plenty of staff meant quick service.
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Fork & Brewer Low Blow | 4.70 | | Brewed by Kelly Ryan (one of my favourite brewers) this is a seriously tasty New World Pale Ale with Nelson Sauvin hops shining through. Firm malts with, perhaps, even more bitterness than I was expecting. |
06 Nov 2014 (McGargle)
Very busy.
Maxim - The Simcoe Kid | 4.50 | | Perfectly OK but short of everything - especially hops. |
30 Oct 2014 (McGargle)
All 12 pumps devoted to Festival beers. Just a shame that this festival offers so few tempting brews. The 'overseas' attempts have been almost all disappointing.
Adnams - Sixpoint Bklyn Bitter | 5.50 | | One of the few festival beers with a bit of character. Smooth, quite lightly hopped and surprisingly moreish. |
23 Oct 2014 (McGargle)
Busy. But is curry night losing its popularity? Far more drinkers than diners.
Hook Norton - Brew Moon Real Antipodean Ale | 4.00 | | Middle of the road golden ale. |
Marston's - Birrificio Lambrate Ligera | 4.80 | | Still wanted more from the hops and less from the yeast. |
Banks's - Two Birds Golden Ale | 4.40 | | Thin pale golden ale. Not worth travelling halfway round the world to brew. |
21 Oct 2014 (McGargle)
Good to see it busy with lots of drinkers trying the festival beers.
Marston's - Birrificio Lambrate Ligera | 4.80 | | This was OK but, given the hop list, promised much more than it delivered. Good malty body but thin on flavour. |
Wychwood (now brewed at Banks's) - Elysian Night Owl Pumpkin Ale | 6.50 | | This is very much an 'IMHO' beer. Notthin wrong with the condition or presentation. It looked an inviting dark amber with a long lasting creamy head. But it was (IMHO) undrinkable. The recipe was overly complicated (spiced with ginger,
cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and allspice,
together with pumpkin concentrate) and spicing levels badly misjudged. It was as if an inexpert chef had tipped random pre-ground spices into some fruit juice. Doesn't anyone taste the beers before releasing them? |
16 Oct 2014 (McGargle)
Festival beers just starting to appear.
Celt Experience (now brands are owned by Evans Evans) - Native Storm | 4.40 | | Worth 4* for this well crafted and dry hopped traditional British premium bitter. Hope there's some left for tonight. |
