Pleasant couple of hours. Low volume live music in the main bar - very nice. Fairly busy.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Weetwood - Old Dog Premium Bitter4.50ExcellentFast becoming a favourite of mine.Nice middle of the road ale with good balance and body. Malty aroma and taste along with a hint of dty bitterness.
Sandstone - Edge3.80ExcellentSo many of these bitter / citrus type ales around. Some are very good and this is one of them.
Merlin - The Wizard4.20ExcellentAnother crackingly good bitter.
McGivern Ales - Decipher4.70ExcellentMalty, toasty, nutty sweet, medium ale with a slight tang. A must when visiting.
04 Feb 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Busy early Monday evening. Great beer choice.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Llangollen - Welsh Black Bitter5.50GoodDisappointed, at 5.5% I expected so much more. A very dark beer and more a cross between a medium bitter and a porter. Didn't do it for me.
Happy Valley - Five Rings4.00GoodGood hoppy bitter, bit one dimensional by modern bitters. I enjoyed this.
Deeply Vale - Golden Vale4.20GoodNice medium bitter with a fragrant sweetness.
Blackjack - Shuffled Deck (previously seen as 3.9% too)3.80GoodA golden, hoppy bitter.
02 Feb 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Usual excellent beer and service.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Rat - White Rat4.00ExceptionalFrighteningly good.
Weetwood - Old Dog Premium Bitter4.50ExcellentNicely balanced medium bitter.
Weetwood - Best Bitter3.80GoodSeemed to me a weaker version of the Old Dog Premium Bitter, still very good and lots of taste.
Marston Moor (brewed at Rudgate) - Mongrel4.00GoodFlavoursome amber beer, caramel, fruit and a good hoppy bitterness.
26 Jan 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Very busy Saturday evening.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Titanic - Full Steam Ahead4.40GoodGood bitter beer with Titanic characteristics. Don't remember it being quite as tangy.
Happy Valley - Lazy Daze4.20GoodA proper bitter.
21 Jan 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Busy early evening. Lots of locals, lots of chat. One of those pubs where you feel at ease and all is well with the world; or at least for a couple of hours!
BeerABVScoreNotes
Salopian - Shropshire Gold3.80ExcellentThis was so different to my previous attempt with this beer. Not too lemony, some good malt, crisp and clean. Very, very good.
Salopian - Hop Twister4.50ExcellentLots of citrussy / hop flavours, excellent.
Stonehouse - K.P.A.4.60ExcellentDespite its name, the best all round golden ale out there. So many great flavours, great balance and body.
19 Jan 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Fairly quiet evening - a medley of songs from the ladies behind the bar livened things up.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Purity - Mad Goose4.20ExcellentA proper bitter, crisp, clean and bitter. In my opinion one of the best bitters I have tasted.
McGivern Ales - Bridge Bitter4.10GoodNow very consistent and always worth a try.
14 Jan 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Fairly quiet, lots of good chat with the regulars.
BeerABVScoreNotes
York (now brewed by and at Black Sheep) - Yorkshire Terrier4.20GoodLike this beer more each time I try it. Really is a quality butter with a fair bire.
Rat - Circus Rat4.20GoodA full on bitter with some Christmassy flavours, particularly cloves. Also had an aroma of cloves. More suited to a dentist's waiting room, even so was quite enjoyable.
Facer's - Village Bitter3.70GoodA pleasant, malty session bitter.
12 Jan 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Fairly quiet for this place.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Colchester - Dark Ruby Ale4.30GoodSome initial malt and a semi dry hoppy finish. Not bad.
RedWillow - Heartless4.90AcceptableDisappointing stout style beer.
Rowton - Dark Side Stout4.50AcceptableRun of the mill stout.
07 Jan 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
Early evening with the regulars. Very pleasant, as always.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Salopian - Black Heart Stout4.30GoodLight on the stouty flavours and a little thin on body.
Rat - Rat C C3.80GoodAnother good bitter from this brewer.
Wincle - Wassale4.80AcceptableA medicinal assortment of spices and herbs. Didn't enjoy it as a beer but it has cured my cough.
05 Jan 2013 (Bear & Ragged Staff)
A bit quieter after the excesses of Christmas and the New Year. Nice to see some old froends.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Rat - White Rat4.00ExcellentIf it's on the bar, it has to be tried. Very, very popular.
Boggart - Rum Porter4.60GoodOK if you like rum and raisin.
Facer's - Sunny Bitter4.20GoodToast and marmalade, different in a pleasant way.
North Yorkshire - Crystal Tips4.00AcceptableNoticeable thick, beige head. Flavours were dull and bland.
