BeerABVScoreNotes
Northern (see also Blakemere) - Blakemere Brown Ale4.40AcceptableUnfortunately one of those brown beers that is dominated by crystal malt, giving a sticky bittersweet flavour and a rather unpleasant tangy finish. My score 13/20.
Milltown - Maltissimo5.30AcceptableAnother crystal malt beer but with slightly less bitterness and a fuller body. My score 14/20.
14 Feb 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
A bit quieter on this evening as there were other distractions.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Bowland - Wardsley Gold4.10ExcellentPale golden beer dominated by citrus grapefruit and honey flavours. Rather sweet with a lingering grapefruit finish. My score 16/20.
Strands - Brown Bitter3.80GoodFortunately not full of crystal malt, fairly sweet but with some hop balance and a dryish finish. My score 15/20.
Ilkley - Triple A4.00AcceptableA reddish bitter with a strong, hoppy bitterness and a very dry, bitter finish. Not really to my taste. My score 13/20.

17 Jan 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Far busier than usual on a Tuesday, like Christmas again.

31 Dec 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Fairly quiet on the last Saturday of the year, as a close at 5pm was approaching.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Tyne Bank - Oatmeal Cherry Stout5.20ExcellentDoes what it says more or less. Sweet cherry flavours up against robust roast malt. My score 16/20.
Greenfield - Black Five4.00GoodDark brown mild style ale with plenty of maltiness and a bittersweet fruity finish. My score 15/20.
29 Dec 2011 (Stephen Harris)
Outrageously busy to the extent that it was difficult to get near the bar and see what was available, let alone order a drink. Consequently this is just a partial list of beers, as I left after one pint to find somewhere more peaceful.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Empire - Silver Citrus3.80GoodPerhaps not as crisp and sharp-tasting as I was hoping from a beer of this name, but good nevertheless.

The pub is found in Southwark, Central London, SE1 9AA.

Famous pub opposite Borough Market in Stoney Street. Central bar has many beers which change on a regular basis and are mostly from UK micros. Can be extremely busy. Refurbishment some time ago and now there is one main room with a side area with seating as well. Many customers use the pavement outside to stand and enjoy their drinks. Really a must for anyone taking in London pubs. Sports 12 handpumps with 6 in each of the 2 distinct bar serving areas plus a further 4 for cider dispense at the far rear. Upstairs restaurant bar area too, mainly for lunchtime use. In 2019 the real ale choice was drastically reduced to 4 and the cider was withdrawn. Downstairs toilets. Card payment only, cash not accepted here.

We have visited this pub 282 times, seen 813 different beers and tried 647 of them.
