26 Feb 2012 (Stephen Harris)
Late afternoon on Sunday. Perhaps now the only session here that is not over-crowded (I used to swear by Monday evenings). I also drank ‘Mad Hatter Gold’, at 3.5% - I’m not yet sure of the provenance of this beer. Otherwise this is just a partial list of the 11 real ales available.
By The Horns - Lambeth Walk | 5.10 | | A very full-bodied, black, rich porter. |
Liverpool Craft - Icon Pale | 4.00 | | An amber-coloured bitter with a good balance of malt and hops and a bitter aftertaste. |
Grafton - Black Abbots | 4.00 | | A dark brown porter. Sweetish malt, a bit thin. |
Breconshire - Red Dragon | 4.70 | Not Tried
Mr Grundy's - No Man's Land | 4.50 | Not Tried
21 Feb 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Northern (see also Blakemere) - Blakemere Brown Ale | 4.40 | | Unfortunately one of those brown beers that is dominated by crystal malt, giving a sticky bittersweet flavour and a rather unpleasant tangy finish. My score 13/20. |
Milltown - Maltissimo | 5.30 | | Another crystal malt beer but with slightly less bitterness and a fuller body. My score 14/20. |
14 Feb 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
A bit quieter on this evening as there were other distractions.
Bowland - Wardsley Gold | 4.10 | | Pale golden beer dominated by citrus grapefruit and honey flavours. Rather sweet with a lingering grapefruit finish. My score 16/20. |
Strands - Brown Bitter | 3.80 | | Fortunately not full of crystal malt, fairly sweet but with some hop balance and a dryish finish. My score 15/20. |
Ilkley - Triple A | 4.00 | | A reddish bitter with a strong, hoppy bitterness and a very dry, bitter finish. Not really to my taste. My score 13/20. |
31 Jan 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Salamander - Eye Spy | 4.00 | | Well balanced pale hoppy bitter in the usual style. My score 15/20. |
Ossett - Voyager | 4.20 | | Dry hoppy amber bitter. Citrus hop dominates with little malt balance. My score 14/20. |
24 Jan 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Vale - Hopocalypse Vale | 4.30 | | Pale and bitter with crisp citrus hop character. The finish is of citrus fruits. My score 15/20. |
17 Jan 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Far busier than usual on a Tuesday, like Christmas again.
Hawkshead - Dry Stone Stout | 4.50 | | Black stout with a bitter roast malt character. The finish is dry and roasty. My score 16/20. |
10 Jan 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Owenshaw Mill - Junior Gollum | 3.50 | | A fairly bitter but well balanced pale bitter. My score 10/01/12. |
Atomic - Power | 4.80 | | Dark strong bitter with a strong toasted roast malt flavour but little else to back up the taste. My score 14/20. |
31 Dec 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Fairly quiet on the last Saturday of the year, as a close at 5pm was approaching.
Tyne Bank - Oatmeal Cherry Stout | 5.20 | | Does what it says more or less. Sweet cherry flavours up against robust roast malt. My score 16/20. |
Greenfield - Black Five | 4.00 | | Dark brown mild style ale with plenty of maltiness and a bittersweet fruity finish. My score 15/20. |
29 Dec 2011 (Stephen Harris)
Outrageously busy to the extent that it was difficult to get near the bar and see what was available, let alone order a drink. Consequently this is just a partial list of beers, as I left after one pint to find somewhere more peaceful.
Empire - Silver Citrus | 3.80 | | Perhaps not as crisp and sharp-tasting as I was hoping from a beer of this name, but good nevertheless. |
Harvey's - Sussex Best Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried
Oakham - Mompesson's Gold (superseded by 5.2% version - see separate entry) | 5.00 | Not Tried
Triple fff - I Can't Remember ! | 6.00 | Not Tried
Whitstable - Winkle Picker | 4.50 | Not Tried
Ascot - Red IPA | 5.50 | Not Tried
Tyne Bank - Oatmeal Cherry Stout | 5.20 | Not Tried
27 Dec 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
A rare quiet time for this pub.
Empire - Silver Citrus | 3.80 | | Very pale and hoppy with a sharp, citrus hop character. My score 14/20. |
Newmans - Twmbarlwm | 4.60 | | Amber cloured bitter with a bitter flavour not derived from hops, but from malt. Dry, bitter finish. My score 13/20. |
