25 May 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Pre Newark Beer Festival visit.
Norfolk Brewhouse (uses Moongazer brand name too) - Moon Gazer Amber Ale | 4.00 | | Malty amber ale with biscuity malt dominating. Some hop in the dryish finish. My score 15/20. |
16 May 2012 (Philip Pirrip)
Arrived just after the evening's darts matches had finished. Preparing for its own beer festival from Thursday 24th to Sunday 27th May coinciding with the main CAMRA Newark Beer Festival in Riverside Park (except the latter is from Friday to Sunday only).
Northern (see also Blakemere) - Blakemere Brewery Navajo | 3.90 | | Very smooth. Ran out shortly after my pint had been drawn. |
Northern (see also Blakemere) - Blakemere Brewery Hit & Run | 4.50 | | Very clean. Light tasting and distinctive and pleasant raspberry overtone. Ran out during my stay but the last out was still excellent. |
Medieval - Courtly Love | 4.70 | Not Tried
Dark Horse - Best Bitter | 3.80 | Not Tried
01 May 2012 (Philip Pirrip)
As always cutting edge with new breweries I had not quaffed before.
Gundog (re-named now see Acton Ales entry) - Sun Setter | 4.20 | | Second one out - cooler and fresher. Well balanced hop flavour |
Navigation - Stout | 4.40 | | A porterish stout. This is a very new brewery venture. Mark my words they are destined to be very successful and big |
Gundog (re-named now see Acton Ales entry) - Sun Setter | 4.20 | | Maybe first out for a while |
Old Cottage - Halcyon Daze | 5.30 | Not Tried
Blue Monkey - B G Sips | 4.00 | Not Tried
23 Apr 2012 (Philip Pirrip)
The walk from Just Beer doors to Newark North Gate railway station northbound platform now perfected to 12 mins and 38 (or maybe 39) seconds.
Shottle Farm - Shottle Gold | 4.30 | | Zingy taste on the tongue. Golden Ale |
Black Iris - Krasny | 5.30 | | Should have made it my last. Very malty and liquorice aftertaste |
Irwell Works - Tin Plate Dark Mild | 3.60 | Not Tried
Milestone - St George's Legend | 4.00 | Not Tried
15 Apr 2012 (Philip Pirrip)
I like everything that this Micropub and its 4 Tapster Guvs stand for. Mid to late Sunday evening visit. 6 or 8 customers. No individual size G.H. Porter (Provisions) Pork Pies at the pub tonight but half of a large one with mustard did not last long on the train home.
Raw / Brampton Collaboration - Fusion Pacific ESB | 4.70 | | Darky and hoppy Collaboration brew. Good one to end the evening on |
Flipside - Golden Sovereign | 4.20 | | The thimble pre-purchase taster was intriguing with a very dry and grapefruity effect. A subsequent full pint was rather sweet and too fruity to have a second one. |
Irving - Frigate Golden Bitter | 3.80 | | Pretty thin & standard citrus taste. |
27 May 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Two visits here, one just after 10am for a swift one before Newark Beer Festival, then returning late afternoon on way back from festival. Busy both times.
Olde Swan - Dark Mild (aka Pardoe's Dark Swan) | 4.20 | | Excellent sweet and malty dark brown mild. Low hop and toffee and chocolate flavours. My score 16/20. |
Craddock's - Saxon Gold | 4.30 | | Well brewed bitter golden beer with a dry, hoppy bitterness. My score 14/20. |
29 Jan 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Busy with drinkers from the Winter Beer festival.
Hook Norton - Double Stout | 4.80 | | Dark brown stout with some roast maltiness but rather thin for its strength. My score 15/20. |
29 Dec 2010 (ChrisE)
A small crowd of us made this pub look quite busy. We enjoyed a few pints each in a good convivial atmosphere.
Milestone - Cupid | 4.40 | | A pleasant citrusy golden ale. |
Sheffield - IPA | 5.00 | | A slightly hazy malty golden ale, not exactly my idea of an IPA. |
Nelson - Pursers Pussy Porter | 4.80 | Not Tried | Very popular in here. |
Whitstable - Renaissance Ruby Mild | 3.80 | Not Tried
