Evening visit - the longest I have ever had here. Conversation is king.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Dorset Brewing Company - Jurassic4.20ExcellentGood standard bitter
Brentwood - Chockwork Orange6.50ExcellentA strong dark beer - have to say it seemed a bit light on both chocolate and orange flavours

2055 hours visit. Friendly welcoming crowd and guv. The pub's beer count today is 1373 casks, 1255 beers since opening.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Holden's - Buffalo Soldier4.50ExcellentSweetish but enjoyable
Caythorpe - Classic4.60ExcellentSays it is a traditional bitter in every way and that it were lad
Little Earth Project (formerly Mill Green) - Black Peg4.00GoodFor once I have to take issue with Phil's beer menu description card. A sweetish stout with light bitter taste turned out to me a very dry very burnt malt taste with bitterness to knock one's hat off
Old Cottage - Oak Ale4.00Not Tried
12 Aug 2012 (Philip Pirrip)
Mid evening and good crowd in for a Sunday - perhaps Olympics closing ceremony avoiders. When I mentioned Friday's trip to The Snug Micropub at Carnforth I was proudly shown Gregg's (The Snug guv) April 2012 entry in the visitors' book when he visited to be nosey (his word) for ideas and inspiration. Unusually 5 beers alive tonight - normally 3 at one time.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Exeter - 'fraid Not4.00ExcellentA standard mid brown bitter. At first I thought it had a mouldy aftertaste but the label description said "earthy" and that is exactly what it was - earthy, peaty
Tollgate - Ashby Pale4.50ExcellentSharp and fruity
Corvedale - Normans Pride4.30Not TriedRan out during visit
Great Heck - Slaughterhouse Porter4.50Not TriedRan out during visit

21 Jul 2012 (Philip Pirrip)
1945 hours visit. My first Saturday night visit and it was packed with standing room only. Some well oiled customers had been on an earlier beer trip to Southwell by public transport. Found myself talking to Mitch Forster the proprietor of G.H. Porter (Provisions) Ltd and supplier of the pub's superb pork pies. He told me the secrets of the pies but I can not tell you otherwise he would have to kill me. The shop located in one corner of the town's cobbled square has a sign in its window "We open when we are ready and we close when we've had enough". The pub's beer count today is 1292 casks, 1182 beers since opening.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Nottingham - Legend4.00ExcellentJust plain excellent
Arkwright's - Original3.80ExcellentAn interesting sharp bitter which grew on me

21 to 2200 visit. Euro Football final taking toll of numbers as only 2 of the 4 Tapsters in situ when I arrived. Michael Gove would never call this a failing educational institution as I learnt of the derivation of the word oche, about helicopter forward thrust, missing Dad's Army episodes and Sharpness Docks. All this left a little room in my head for mild intoxication.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Copthorne - Barnstormer3.80ExcellentA darker bitter
George Wright - Sterling 414.10ExcellentRefreshing and well hopped
Blackjack - Black Jack Stout5.00ExcellentExcellent stout full of flavour from a new brewery from Manchester
Loddon - Ferryman's Gold4.40Not Tried
19 Jun 2012 (Philip Pirrip)
Late evening until almost last knockings. A oasis of calm isolated from Euro football. Merf was in the high chair and his most unintended joke was to tell that they had recently stocked one of the first casks of the new Pheasantry Brewery's Beer BB and that it had "flown off the bar". Time to leave!
BeerABVScoreNotes
Ascot - Starting Gate (formerly Alley Cat Ale)3.80ExcellentThis had as good as run out so I had a freebie near half before the pipes were pulled through. Absolutely delicious smell and taste
Plain Ales - Sheep Dip3.80ExcellentZesty with a sharp hoppy head
Salamander - Practical Pipsqueak Porter4.80ExcellentGood one to finish on
Peakstones (formerly Peakstones Rock) - Chained Oak4.20GoodDid not inspire I am afraid
Welbeck Abbey - Diamond Jubilee6.00Not Tried
04 Jun 2012 (Philip Pirrip)
2000 hours visit - just the time to arrive. The 4 Tapsters had only been told 45 minutes previously that they had been awarded CAMRA's Nottinghamshire Pub of the Year 2012 against damned stiff competition. A great achievement well done!
BeerABVScoreNotes
Ha'Penny - London Stone4.50ExcellentFruity after the Milestone
Maypole - Solar Storm6.00Excellent50p from every pint goes to Beaumond House Community Hospice
Copthorne - Mild not meek3.80ExcellentShould have had this as part of drinking beers of ABV ascending order not as last of session
Milestone - Celebration4.00GoodUnexceptional Jubilee celebratory
25 May 2012 (Martin the Mildman)
Pre Newark Beer Festival visit.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Norfolk Brewhouse (uses Moongazer brand name too) - Moon Gazer Amber Ale4.00GoodMalty amber ale with biscuity malt dominating. Some hop in the dryish finish. My score 15/20.

The pub is found in Newark, Nottinghamshire, NG24 1BG.

May be a tad difficult to find first time as it is Swan and Salmon Yard just off Castle Gate. A Micropub modelled on The Butchers Arms at Herne, but a bit bigger, this one roomed bar usually has four real ales available. No juke box, pool table, machines or lager. Just Beer! Awarded CAMRA Newark Branch's Pub of the Year 2012. Awarded CAMRA's Nottinghamshire Pub of the Year 2012. Awarded East Midlands Regional Pub of the Year 2012 meaning it went into the last 16 for the CAMRA National Pub of the Year 2012 competition - it might just crack it you know. In the end went no further in the 2012 competition but didn't they do well anyway? Awarded CAMRA Newark Branch's Pub of the Year 2013 and, for the third year running, in 2014 too then in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Awarded CAMRA East Midlands Regional Pub of the Year 2017. Awarded CAMRA Nottinghamshire Pub of the Year 2018. 8 handpumps on the bar counter dispense beer kept in the same level cellar at the rear. Ciders come from the cellar behind by gravity dispense. In Spring 2014 introduced a small but welcome CAMRA card carrying members' discount on real ale, cider and perry but then subsequently withdrawn in spring 2018. A Tap Wall of 6 keg taps was introduced in early 2019.

We have visited this pub 78 times, seen 322 different beers and tried 182 of them.
