02 Jun 2010 (Trevor)
Fairly quiet for my lunchtime visit for a meal with my wife and 2 friends. They were clearing away the garden area following what they felt was a successful Bank Holiday weekend Beer festival. As a result there were more ales available than usual.
Kelham Island (probably brewed by Thornbridge now) - Pale Rider | 5.20 | | Although pale, as the name suggests, it had some distinctive flavours. |
Hawkshead - Brodie's Prime | 4.90 | | Very dark, almost black, but much to my liking. |
Hop Back - Summer Lightning | 5.00 | Not Tried
Timothy Taylor - Landlord | 4.30 | Not Tried
Jennings (since closure now brewed at Marston's) - Cumberland Ale | 4.00 | Not Tried
St Austell - Tribute | 4.20 | Not Tried
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Young's London Special (was Special) | 4.50 | Not Tried
30 May 2010 (Ian)
Back on Sunday evening for this weekend festival. Couple of the beers had turned over already with some new ones on. Busy in the garden with Kareokee. Some good, some really bad.
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Lord Marples | 4.00 | | Got the last half, but it was very good. Great condition to the last and great malty and hoppy flavours. |
Hawkshead - Brodie's Prime | 4.90 | | Very dark brown, ruby with thin beige head. Choc with some coffee and dark and smooth on aroma. Fullish in mouth, good dark fruits, dryish malts but some juiciness too. Some mild coffee and some choc. I love it. Really good strongish mild. But not bitter on end. Smokey choc finish with some black cherry. Excellent. |
Hop Back - Crop Circle | 4.20 | | Pale gold, lasting thickish white head. Grassy aroma, some herb/spice on the hop, but mostly a flatish grassy beer. Great condition but lacks punch. Some lime on finish. Condition makes it ok. |
Batemans - GHA | 4.20 | | Gold, thin lasting white head. Some Bateman's yeast, very distinctive on aroma. Some golden syrp on the pale malts. Some dryness on the end. Dull golden ale. |
29 May 2010 (Ian)
A beer festival in a pub in Ashford!!!! Wow, apart from the one at the Hoodeners Horse in Great Chart the first one in years. So I had to go didn't I? OK so it was freezing cold and wet, but there were some hardy regulars out in the garden. I really liked it. Beers were standard regional fare, but in good condition.
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Lord Marples | 4.00 | | I'm never going to complain at a Thornbridge beer on in Ashford. Good decent brown bitter. |
Cotleigh - Barn Owl Bitter | 4.50 | | Proper brown bitter with good dry rich malts. |
Ringwood - Boondoggle (now is 4.2% version) | 3.90 | | Only had this as it was advertised in last Camra publications. Decent herby golden ale, tasty pale malts. Unmistakeably English earthy hops. Slightly spicy. Interesting. |
Kelham Island (probably brewed by Thornbridge now) - Pale Rider | 5.20 | | Haven't had this in years. Still a decent strong blond ale. Just a tad on the syrupy side on aroma. Decent hops, some tropical fruit salad flavours. |
Ringwood - Old Thumper (now superseded by 5.1% version - separate entry) | 5.60 | | Sweetish, some milk choc. Toffee. Just too sweet for me. Good sting on finish. Could see people finding this dangerously drinkable. |
Sharp's - Six Hop | 3.80 | | Hoppiest beer here, but still lacks some backbone. |
