21:00 Very busy with a bar billiards match in the left hand front room. We sat in the panelled room directly behind the bar whilst Mr Pirrip harangued the Great Heck brewer.

Evening. Friendly beer swilling house. The barmaid from The Phoenix was now off duty and in here and gave us good banter including details of the playing difference between tall & narrow skittles and mushroom style skittles bar billiards. I got into conversation with the Great Heck brewer until he was given a break as my colleagues hauled me to sit in the back room.

Quiet on a Saturday afternoon.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Rooster's - Advent4.30AcceptablePale beer that is very bitter from sharp, piney hop flavours. Little malt balance and a sharp, bitter aftertaste. My score 13/20.

Rather quiet on a Saturday afternoon.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Great Heck - Supreme Overlord4.50AcceptablePale and rather bitter hoppy beer. Bitter hop dominates with a little citrus flavour and a dry finish. My score 14/20.

Convivial.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Mauldons - Dickens4.00GoodLight brown with good hop aromas. Fruity flavours lead to a dry finish.
Fulstow (Fugelestou Ales) - Christmas Crunch2.80GoodLight golden ale packs plenty of hops and malt body into a light frame. Cleverly crafted.
Brewster's - Yule Do4.30GoodMid-brown ale. Restrained hops and good malt balance provide an unusual winter warmer.

The pub is found in York, North Yorkshire, YO10 3BP.

Run as a free house this multi-roomed pub was bought and sympathetically renovated by Batemans keeping the attractive multi-roomed layout. An enthusiastic landlord offers several Batemans beers complemented by four interesting guests. Although very much a locals' pub, there is a friendly welcome for strangers. Worthy CAMRA 2009 Town Pub of the Season. 10 handpumps selling real ales and a selection of ciders /perries.

We have visited this pub 7 times, seen 18 different beers and tried 10 of them.
