7th stop of the outing: A barn of a place on the upper deck of Paddington Station. Not overly busy for my first ever visit and early Saturday evening with prompt, friendly service. Named after a certain Bishop of London who was deemed mad to sell off so cheaply church land to the railway company of the time to build the station. The bear part of the name comes from a certain famous bear that the station could almost be named after except this bear came second to the station. Opening as a Fuller's pub in 1999, while selling its own range, it does stock guest beers as indeed there was one on this visit. One of the sizeable walls inside this pub is adorned with a cartoon of the bear in question and alongside a certain mad bishop depicted warding the bear off while a London bus passes with "London Pride" advertised on its side.

Hogs Back - Fairy Tale of New Pork4.00GoodVery good head and lacing and lasting on what for me tasted like a liquid version of a packet of smoky bacon crisps. A smoky first growl for sure! A slightly sweetened bacon flavour pouncing up with cinder toffee, caramel and biscuity notes clawing my somewhat startled taste buds. A maltiness shining through from its Beechwood-smoked German malt. Its hoppy bitterness and peppery characteristics emerging from its 100% home-grown Farnham White Bine hops before shuffling downwards. This is the Tongham-based brewery's Christmas amber-coloured ale. Located between Guildford and Farnham, this family-owned Surrey brewery opened in 1992 and grows its own hops on Manor Farm.

Welcome oasis mid evening after trying out the new Elizabeth line on its first day, from Abbey Wood to Paddington with several intermediate stops for get out and looks around. Odd No London Pride on but hey ho.

Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - ESB5.50ExcellentIn very good condition indeed. £5.60pp would hurt but 20% CAMRA discount softens the hit

I'm early for a train and nip upstairs for a quick pint. It's an oasis of calm in here as the evening rush hour rages outside.

Saturday evening, I popped in for a pint and something to eat. A nice relaxing atmosphere in here tonight. A good range of beers on but I have not listed them all.

Friday evening and a comfortable atmosphere. A good range of beers, mostly if not all from the Fuller's stable, I did not make a note of all the beers available.

Evening. Disconcertingly one has to pass through this part of the station where everything else seems to be behind hoardings. With virtually no trains due to an earlier derailment outside the station the place was very quiet.

Early evening. Potentially one of the best UK railway station pubs only marred by what I thought was someone carrying rotting fish but it turned out to be someone eating one of the pub's fish and chips meals by a nearby pillar. More neutral smelling food might be appropriate, but preferably no food at all.

11:00 On the way to Heathrow to see my son off we came here for his last pint of cask beer of this visit home. The bar was fairly quiet, consternation was caused by the test message to evacuate the station not being preceded by the "this is a test message" announcement. My son noticed a sign offering a CAMRA discount tucked away by the fruit machine. Missed out on the first round but claimed for the second. A constant irk for me is the two enamel railway signs on the way to the loos. Both are in London Midland maroon rather than the more appropriate Great Western brown.
BeerABVScoreNotes
London Beer Factory - Paxton Pale Ale5.00ExcellentResinous American style pale ale. I noticed a phenomenon that came as some surprise to me. The hop taste from the Castle Rock beer was light and spritzy and hit the front and sides of my tongue whereas this beer hit the very back of the palate. My son experienced exactly the same difference. Supposedly the idea that different parts of the mouth taste different flavours is a myth but I would beg to differ.
