2110 hours visit. Difficult to find as not fully pre-researched but followed my nose and lights on the towpath. Excellent pub with clear real ale enthusiasm but oddly no CAMRA literature about. Felt it could do with having the mine host holding court.
Northern (see also Blakemere) - Blakemere Jewel | 4.60 | | Light hopped IPA and refreshing however the expectation with IPA these days is a heavy hop hit 6%er |
Aylesbury (ABC) - Bay State Wheat | 4.40 | | Nothing exceptional |
Vale - Red Kite (superseded by 4.3% version) | 4.00 | Not Tried
Tring - Riser | 3.70 | Not Tried | House beer for this pub |
XT Brewing - No. 5 American Amber | 5.50 | Not Tried

Early Monday evening and quite busy. We sat in a back room with a serving hatch and celebrated a friend's birthday. This is the pub that is pictured on the front cover of the 2012 Good Beer Guide.
Tring - Bring Me Sunshine | 4.20 | | Mid brown in colour, refreshing and hoppy. Brewed as a tribute to the late Eric Morecambe. |
Wentworth - Imperial Ale | 3.80 | Not Tried | This ran out before I could try one. |
Batemans - Lincolnshire Bitter | 4.20 | Not Tried

A busy Friday evening. A large group of us almost took over the room to the left of the bar, we enjoyed a brilliant evening with the company of locals and their dogs. I really like this place.
Unfortunately we got to Berkhamsted station late evening only to find the service on the West Coast Main Line suspended after a person hit by a train at South Kenton earlier in the evening.
Dark Star - Saison | 4.50 | | |
Tring - Riser | 3.70 | | A house beer brewed by Tring. I did not make a note of the ABV but it was a good session beer, and would have been around the 3.8 mark. |
Vale - Endeavour | 4.00 | | Named after the fictional Inspector Endeavour Morse, this beer had a delicious citrusy, hoppy flavour. |
Coach House - Flintlock Pale Ale | 4.40 | | Not to my taste at all. Strong buttery, butterscotch flavours. |

A warm and sunny afternoon, we enjoyed several pints, and a good chat with the landlord. There were eight different types of snuff available on the bar.
Bushy's - Castletown Bitter | 3.50
Mad Squirrel (formerly Red Squirrel) - IPA | 4.10 | | I really enjoyed this. |
Vale - Black Swan Dark Mild | 3.30
Tring - Blond | 4.00 | Not Tried
Dark Star - Mai Bock | 4.50 | Not Tried | This ran out and was replaced by Red Squirrel IPA |

A most enjoyable evening. The landlord made us feel extremely welcome, and the free food that seems to be a Friday night tradition in this pub was most welcome.

Wood's - Special Bitter | 4.20
Nobby's - Wild West Ale | 4.50 | Not Tried
