2nd stop on the outing: A 50-minute trot from the Chafford Arms led us shortly after 4pm to this very ancient weather-boarded Grade II-listed freehouse. You climb down from the quiet country lane, with a carpark for the pub opposite, a good many steps to enter its very original front-door which is so low you must duck if you are of the average height or above. Oak-beamed ceilings throughout are adorned with local hops no doubt. A very old-fashioned feel about it was slightly marred by somewhat loudly played synthesized music on the inside and with a different track playing simultaneously on the terrace at the pub's rear and which you could also hear where we sat close to the open-door to the terrace. Quarry-tiled flooring and very large rugs lent it a further rustic charm and where its interior extends the width of three farm cottages which were in place originally. A huge inglenook fireplace dominated the main bar area and with the other areas laid out for dining in. It is dated 1520 on the old oven door set into the fireplace. It is dog-friendly throughout and serves food all day on a Saturday. Prompt friendly service and the bonus of this visit was that they were staging their first ever beer festival with 6 casks on stillage and where you could help yourself once given a glass at the bar. I happened to go for a local Larkins on stillage that required the assistance of the barmaid to give its plastic tap-handle the right sort of tug to get it to turn. Gravity-dispensed beer from the tap was then achieved, while the finings (yeast and other brewing elements) were being collected in the "belly" of the cask below the tap hole.

Larkins - Traditional3.40ExcellentThis local brew from just 3 miles away at Chiddingstone came with very good head and lacing and lasting throughout. A pleasantly dry hoppy first bite to Larkins' staple bitter. A hop-infused fruitiness rising and a dry hoppiness sailing off in its aftertaste. Larkins proudly uses its own hops and malt and lists some 10 local establishments which stock its ales, including this one. About 50 or so pubs and restaurants stock Larkins' ales in total. Three well-established varieties of hops grow on their 4 acre hop farm: Early Choice Goldings, Bramling Cross and Whitbread Golding alongside some new hedgerow hops planted recently. The beer producer could not get more traditional and so hence the name no doubt for this ale, with each September witnessing locals, friends and family volunteering for the hop-picking event at their farm lasting some 2 to 3 days and assisted by the Bruff Hop Picking Machine courtesy of Worcestershire mechanical engineering from about 1960. There are no added sugars, I am pleased to note as I have never enjoyed an overly sweet bitter for example, so making their beer as natural as possible. Larkins also prides itself on developing a unique and carefully guarded strain of its own proprietary live ale yeast since 1993 meaning no one else can make beer quite like Larkins can. To my taste buds, they are doing a fine job and today's visit bore testimony to that!
Larkins - Best Bitter4.40ExcellentFresh out of the barrel racked up at the Spotted Dog's mini-beer festival of six on stillage, I would suggest as "very lively" was the description from the barmaid as she ably assisted me to sample this Best Bitter from just 3 miles up the road at Chiddingstone. A very bitter first bite. A moreishly hoppy bitterness rising up. A lightly fruity note or two from summer fruits now entertaining my taste buds before the climax of this bitter's performance for me, a dry moreishly malted caramel-infused bitterness shining through for a long-lasting finish.

Pub 3 in the Larkin's tour. They were growing pineapples in the garden, which itself gave fleeting views over the hills as the trees stayed gently in the breeze.

Fairly busy bank holiday Saturday lunchtime.A large family group of us came and dodged the wasps. Good pub.

Wolf - Golden Jackal3.70ExcellentThis seems to be everywhere this summer, and justly so. one of my favourite goldens-this has a good hop bite, coupled with some fruit.A good quaffing beer for a summer afternoon.
Larkins - Traditional3.40GoodThis didn't seem to be the Traditonal that I remember: the toffee notes were replaced by a sharper edge-I don't think it was off, but a disappointment, as I really like this beer usually.
Harvey's - Sussex Best Bitter4.00Not TriedMy father in law and stepson had this, and said it was fine.

I had the week off and Isabel was in Nursery so we decided to visit Penshurst place and come here for lunch. We arrived just before 12 and sat out the back and enjoyed the views over the Weald.
