Late afternoon fairly busy around the bar, we found a table towards the quieter back of the pub.

A long standing favourite of mine. This was a lunchtime visit and a good number of people were eating including one gentleman who complained that the chips were not as golden brown as usual. It was explained to him that they peel and cut their own spuds and are now having to fry new season potatoes. Nevertheless he was not happy and was given a full refund including the cost of his pie. I ordered a chip butty for my lunch and enjoyed it.

Late evening until 1am close. Wigan is quite lively on a Saturday night/Sunday morning but this place is well run and enjoyable.

I believe this is actually a Carlsberg Tetley brand contract brewed by Banks's, not actually a Banks's beer.

Evening. Lively crowd in all getting a pub crawl card stamped up.
Worse than Wainwright, this had no Banks's provenance or an abv on the pump clip - a devil's brew
Thwaites (brewed at Banks's) - Wainwright (please now use the Banks's entry)

I used to come here in the late 1970s when it was listed in the Good Beer Guide, I think it lost its popularity with ale drinkers and closed for a while. I read that it had recently been voted Pub of the Season and decided that it was time to do a repeat visit.
The pub is found in Wigan, Greater Manchester, WN1 1LD.
Originally Raven Hotel. a large pub conveniently close to Wigan Wallgate railway station, it has a wonderful interior which has been fully refurbished yet retains its intricately tiled floors showing the position of former corridors. It is noted for good value food, and a good selection of cask ales. 6 handpumps.
We have visited this pub 5 times, seen 21 different beers and tried 5 of them.
