Pub claims to be the oldest in England? Mid afternoon visit fairly quiet until peace shattered by a screaming child.

Proper old pub. Red sealing wax wallpaper. Stained oak beams. Wooden floors. 1930's blues music on the stereo, but still conversation dominated. Great pub.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Great Heck - Shankar IPA5.90GoodThis one was in tribute to Ian, that crazy high ABV, high alpha acid loon. This beer was light copper brown in colour. It had the hopping level of a sub-double IPA (making it a new style of beer; a SDIPA - ha ha). Really nice almost deep deep orange peel finish. Actually I quite liked it even if it's from a lineage of beers I think laughable.
Woodforde's - Flagondry3.60GoodPale gold. Nice light body with rich hints of marmalade and butter (but not dyacetyl butter).

This pub seemed more geared up for tourists and the families of the children at St Albans School than for beer drinkers. Lovely building inside. I sat in the beer garden and got smoked out by the kitchen firing up.

Black Sheep - Best Bitter3.80AcceptableNormally one of my favourites. Bit more caramel than usual, but it has a sharp hop finish that is good. Fine.
