For such a small pub, it does well as busy for our early evening visit but not so that you could not get to see the six beers on or put your order in. Currently in the Good Beer Guide for its range and quality of beers and friendly service.

Evening visit. I expected it to be nothing more than a tourist trap but whilst popular was welcoming with many nooks and crannies to check out. Not as expensive as I assumed too.

Evening. A right old tourist trap. A bossy barmaid scolded me for not having asked for a straight glass at time of ordering, presumably assuming I had psychic knowledge of the pub's "quaint" policy of serving ales in jugs. A good reason for this being my last visit.

A nostalgic visit for me to a pub that was for a few years in the late-1980s my local, when I lived just yards away on the Swan Road Estate. It was a time when the area was a bit of a battleground between squatters, council tenants and ‘yuppie’ invaders. We had recently transferred from the first camp into the second, but in time this pub was lost to the third. Dominated today by a raucous Christmas party table.

The pub is found in Rotherhithe, Greater London, SE16 4NF.

An ancient, riverside pub in Rotherhithe Street, believed to have been established, as the Ship, in 1550. Associated with the departure point of the Mayflower, which sailed from here, via Plymouth, to the Americas with a shipload of Pilgrim Fathers in 1620. The pub was rebuilt in the eighteenth century (supposedly incorporating timbers from the Mayflower) and became known as the Spread Eagle & Crown, before adopting the Mayflower name in the 1960s. It has the appearance of venerable age, with plenty of dark timber and nooks and crannies. There is a riverside, wooden, drinking platform. Popular with American tourists. 6 handpumps. Operated by the Black Dog Pub Co.

We have visited this pub 4 times, seen 21 different beers and tried 5 of them.
