| Downton - Scrumble - Malty Best Bitter | 4.20 | ![]() | Presented with very good head and lacing and sticking all the way on this chestnut-coloured bitter from an independent brewery based in Downton near Salisbury, Wiltshire*, that has been operating since 2003. A dry malty first hit with a fruited hedgerow edge. A hoppy bitterness rising from hop varieties such as Challenger, East Kent Goldings and Pioneer that they are known to use in their other bitters such as New Forest. A good malty note joining in with hints of caramel and biscuit from their English malts used and likely to be Maris Otter, Crystal, and roasted barley. A dry hoppy bitterness paddling out. In very good form and extremely moreish in its lasting hoppy and malty flavourings. *The brewery’s specialties include: IPAs, Imperial Stouts and high-gravity bottled-conditioned beers. |

The pub is found in Kingston upon Thames, Greater London, 6AP.
Close to Richmond Park at 19 New Road, Kingston upon Thames, and approached on the residential side of Kingston railway station (away from the side with Kingston high street and shops), this old-fashioned free house has been owned and managed by the same family for 35 plus years and is a real gem of pub. It has grown out of two cottages and is about 150 years old. To the real ale drinker’s delight, there are up to four changing guest beers usually available. The pub’s ceiling bears testimony to this, displaying a vast collection of pump clips. Accredited for beer quality as local CAMRA Pub of the Year 2025 and in the Good Beer Guide, on a visit in February 2026 there were six real ales on and the one sampled was in superb condition. Cards and dominoes are available. Large screen TVs show all major sports. Front outside seating all year round, while the rear garden is open in the summer months. The pub was bought from Bass Charrington 35 years ago and first licensed in 1868. Apart from serving bar snacks, it is run as a wet-pub only with no frills in serving only instant coffee and builders' tea, but according to their website, they unashamedly state “our ale is spot-on.” The pub is dog-friendly and they generally get a pat and a biscuit and well-behaved children are accommodated until 6.00pm, with their well-behaved grown-ups. It is the only family-owned free house in Kingston at the time of an early 2026 visit.
We have visited this pub once, seen 6 different beers and tried 1 of them.
