The Marquis (Morton-Scott Pubs)
Visits Details
05 Oct 2021 (ChrisE)
I popped in for a quick one as I had not been here for many years. I discovered that the price of my beer was £2.40 for a half and £4.85 for a pint. I opted for a half.

16 Mar 2019 (Philip Pirrip)
Late evening visit. Ludicrously loud vinyl music being played when people just wanted to talk to each other.
St Austell - Tribute | 4.20 | | Seems to me Tribute these days has no smell and tastes like cold bitter water |
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Adnams - Ghost Ship | 4.50 | Not Tried
Red Rock - Rushy Mede | 4.40 | Not Tried | Who is going to buy a beer showing no brewery name nor abv on a home-made paper pumpclip? |
15 Jan 2017 (Stephen Harris)
Once upon a time, when the world was considerably younger and I worked nearby, I used this pub quite a lot. Haven’t been here for donkey’s though. Nice and relaxed on Sunday afternoon, with a ‘bring your own vinyl’ thing going on.
St Austell - Proper Job | 4.50 | | Golden. I always enjoy this English-style IPA. |
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Pride | 4.10 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Banks's - Young's London Original (was Bitter) - previously brewed in Bedford and at Wychwood | 3.70 | Not Tried
09 Jul 2016 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening late, as brief a visit as I could make it with slow clearance of dirty glasses and music blaring when everyone was just trying to talk. Offered one of the grimmest short measures seen for yonks.
Bath Ales - Gem Bitter | 4.10 | | Now St Austell owned, will it go the way of Doom Bar. Did not taste quite right to me, too cloying |
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Wadworth - Horizon | 4.00 | Not Tried
03 Jul 2015 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening late.
Oakham - JHB | 3.80 | | Slightly overchilled but not inappropriate for a balmy night |
Hop Back - Summer Lightning | 5.00 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | Ran out, line pulled through for a new cask. Who drinks this stuff? |
02 Jun 2015 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening until last orders bell. Window seats have a wall sign beside them saying "Watch out for Thieves nasty slippery vermin".
Little Beer Corporation - Little Haka | 3.50 | | Dark brown and very flavoursome from this Guildford outfit which I had not come across before |
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
Oakham - Citra | 4.20 | Not Tried
Red Rock - Back Beach | 3.80 | Not Tried
11 Mar 2014 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening. Some grim brim measures seen.
Dartmoor - Dragon's Breath | 4.40
Butcombe - Bitter (or Original Beer) | 4.00 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | Pub clip turned through 90° |
House Beer - Marquis Brunette | 4.20 | Not Tried | When asked barmaid said Morton-Scott (the pub owners) had opened their own brewery but I can find no record. With no provenance I wouldn't consider drinking it |
11 Oct 2013 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening. A visit for old times sake but not a patch on its old existence when it had a beautiful enormous Hooper Struve mirror on one wall and a large ceiling mounted circular gas heater that could toast the unwary.
Portobello - Market Porter | 4.60
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried | Clip turned round 180° |
Banks's - Young's London Original (was Bitter) - previously brewed in Bedford and at Wychwood | 3.70 | Not Tried
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Young's London Special (was Special) | 4.50 | Not Tried
