4th visit of the outing: Strangely lacking a bar but it only opened as a pub in 2016. This 15th century half-timbered building was part of the ancient Hospital of St John. As well as 3 Kent-based cask on, on gravity dispense from a cellar room at its rear, there were many KeyKeg, bottled beers and cans on offer. Once I realised there was no bar, I was served promptly by the barman in the front area where he was hovering. It is table service only. Thankfully not too busy for our early afternoon visit to find a few tables for our party of 8. One of the backrooms overlooks picturesque gardens and alms-houses that are hidden from the street.
Tonbridge - Country Best | 4.00 | | Very good head and lacing and lasting on this best bitter from East Peckham, north-east of Tonbridge. A moreishly very bitter first bite. A dry hoppiness rising from its Kentish Fuggles and Pilgrim hops. A subtle maltiness coming to the fore alongside a hint of spice and fruit. A pleasantly lingering bitterness. |
Tonbridge - Coppernob | 3.80 | | Head and lacing, very good, and lasting, good, on this East Peckham, north-east of Tonbridge, bitter. A caramel-infused biscuity bitter first bite. A dry hoppy bitterness rising up aided by its Northdown, Challenger, Golding and Fuggle hops. A pleasant malty note or two sailing off into the sunset. |
Tonbridge - Easy Street Pale | 3.90 | Not Tried

Was going to go to the New Inn but turned out there was a beer festival going on and since it was raining everyone was crowded inside, so we gave it a miss and went to the Tallis. And jolly nice it was too. Managed to get a table in the main room. Quite busy, and very so by the time we left about 6pm.
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - HPA Hoppy Pale Ale | 3.60 | | Really good. Stayed on this all afternoon. Hoppy (as the name suggests) and dry. |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - No. 3 | 5.00 | Not Tried
Tonbridge - Blonde Ambition | 4.20 | Not Tried
Tonbridge - Coppernob | 3.80 | Not Tried | Came on whilst we were there, replacing the Tonbridge Traditional |

Early evening- monthly quiz in the larger room so non-quizzers were told to sit in the smaller front room. The long-time manager has now become the owner. It doesn’t seem to have cheered him up much. Enjoyed the beer at £3.90 a pint. Listened to a bit of the quiz, Round 1 - Balls!

Fair few in, but the comfy back room was empty, so we sat in there. Ian struggled to get out of his seat when we came to go - the downsides of a puffer jacket.
Tonbridge - Capel Pale Green Hop | 4.50 | | Toffee, slight sherbet, red apple peal. Really liked this golden light brown beer |
Tonbridge - Ebony Moon | 4.20 | Not Tried
Pig & Porter - Slave to the Money | 4.10 | Not Tried
18 Jul 2023 (Magnus Greel)
Mid evening sadly just the three of us during our short stay in this comfortable cosy and welcoming pub. Just the two cask ales available amongst a sea of 'craft' beers..
Tonbridge - Blonde Ambition | 4.20 | | Instant and well deserved top marks for this faultless ale. Despite being full of beer this was a joy to drink and finished off the night perfectly! |
Tonbridge - Traditional | 3.60 | Not Tried

A swift half on the way to get the bus home. Busy, but got a seat at the back.
Tonbridge - Capel Pale Ale | 4.50 | | Really good. |
Tonbridge - Coppernob | 3.80 | Not Tried

Friday mid afternoon. Landlord bemoaning the slow sales of real ale - he is now down to just two at a time but says he still has to throw beer away at times. Craft (key keg) ales (8) doing well though. Strange - at only £3 a pint the cask is the cheapest in the city (excluding ‘spoons of course).
Pig & Porter - Skylarking | 4.00 | | Just short of excellent - £3 pint |
Pig & Porter - Lilac Time Mild | 3.80 | Not Tried

Lunchtime first in - nice chat with Sky as she was getting the log burner going.
Had mentioned this pub to some CAMRA people recently who were a bit dismissive of the high prices - but all three cask ales are £3 a pint with CAMRA discount. Great value for the Moo!
(Two other cask ales on but not noted).
Old Dairy (being contract brewed after it closed) - Dark Side of the Moo | 7.00 | | Delicious pint - brilliant name.
All together now “and when the band you’re in starts playing different tunes. I’ll see you on the ...” |

Stop 8 - I didn’t plan on this many - good choice - best beer all evening.
Four Candles - Pacific Pale | 4.50 | | Sparklingly clear, very good flavour. |
