First visit of the outing: Early afternoon meet-up with two fellow real ale drinkers from Ramsgate, following my breakfast in a local café, a walk round the harbour quay and stroll along the rock pools as the tide was a long way out. Certainly, greener here than in London and following the heavy downpour Broadstairs had on Thursday. Warm friendly attentive service at the bar as is customary and four real ales on to choose from and a choice of bench seating on the inside as quiet footfall at this time of the day.

| Mighty Oak - Red Kite | 4.20 | | 1st beer of this visit: Presented with good head and lasting lacing on this ruby-coloured English bitter from an Essex-based brewing operation set up in 1996 in Brentwood, before moving in 2001 to its current home in the West Station Yard industrial area in Maldon, Essex. A dry bitter first hit from its hedgerow and tropical hops from its UK First Gold behind its sweet citrus, orangey fruitiness and a subtle floral spice and lending a sharp hoppy crispness, and US-fruited hops, Simcoe and Chinook. Its Simcoe behind its passion fruit, apricot, and candied pineapple and Chinook lending zesty, rind-like grapefruit hints and a wild orange punch for me in its bitter hoppiness. A malty dryness winning over from its blend of Maris Otter, its base malt, Crystal and Dark Crystal malt, and Black malt lending it, its ruby tint. A hint of sweet treacle malt lingering and a touch of herbal spiciness from its pepper, tarragon, juniper and smoky earthiness putting in appearances on its downwards exit. Served in top nick. |
| Kent - Dubai - creamy milk stout | 4.70 | | 2nd beer of this visit: Served with an excellent head and a lasting creamy lacing on this milk stout from farmhouse brewing set up in 2011 in Birling, West Malling, Kent. A dry bitter first bite. From its malted barley and roasted malts, a chocolatey, coffee-infused cocktail of maltiness rising but not too much of an overload of a chocolate milkshake for me! A bitterness winning over from its locally sourced Fuggles, a woody, spicy and slightly damp-earth flavoured hop, and East Kent Goldings, an earthy, herbal and honey-like hop, and there to balance out the heavy sugars of the lactose and chocolate. A subtle fruity hoppiness bobbing up and down mixed with its creamy cocoa and balanced by its Middle Eastern creamy green nuttiness from imitating the middle layer of the Dubai chocolate bars. Pistachio is a culinary nut and is scientifically the edible seed of a drupe, a fruit with a hard stone, like a peach or a cherry. The pistachio tree* is native to Central Asia and the Middle East. A lingering dry sweet hoppiness with hints of chocolate waving on its descent. Its lactose (milk sugar) aiding its thick, creamy slide through its chocolatey layers from its chocolate and cocoa extracts. In top form. *Pistachios today largely come from the United States (mainly California), Iran and Turkey, producing roughly 87% of the entire world's crop. |

2nd visit of the outing: Busy on my arrival late afternoon and conveniently located opposite the Mermaid Fish and Chip café I had just come from after a walk around the harbour quay. Prompt, friendly service as is customary and a bench seat to be had inside. Usual four real ales on to choose from. No band being set up as is often the case on a Saturday mid-afternoon onwards. Busy with punters inside and in this micropub's outside seating area positioned on its left-hand side as you face its entrance.

A fruited but dry bitter first bite on this Spring Ruby and which is a red-coloured cask ale brewed by Theakston Brewery as a seasonal exclusive closely mirroring the flavour profile of Theakston's famous Theakston XB Premium Bitter. A hoppy bitterness rising from its English Bramling Cross and Fuggles hops. A touch of malty sweetness winning over from its English malted barley lending flavours of caramel, toffee, rhubarb and apple fruit. A dry hoppiness but fruited with berries sliding downwards. In fine form with good conditioning. |

1st visit of this outing to Broadstairs: Quiet for my early afternoon arrival following a breakfast in the High Street and a walk around the harbour quay to watch the sailing dinghies just a little way out at sea, followed by a short visit to Bleak House to browse their shop and gardens. Prompt friendly service as is customary here and met up with two fellow real ale enthusiasts residing in Ramsgate.

| Wantsum - Fortitude (was 4.2%) | 4.60 | | 1st beer of this visit: Presented with very good head and lasting lacing on this local premium best bitter from St Nicholas-at-Wade, just outside of Birchington-on-Sea in Kent. It was first brewed in 2009, the year the brewery was set up, and is named in honour of the WWII Allied military deception plan, Operation Fortitude. A dry hoppy first hit from its mix of traditional English hops and punchy American hops giving rise to earthy and delicate herbal and fresh pine hints. A sweet blackcurrant flavouring prevailing. A bitter maltiness rising from its blend of four types of malts, including traditional British barley, lending it bready flavours for me. A dry hoppy bitterness paddling out. Presented in top form with lasting conditioning. |
| Bexley - Spike Island | 5.30 | | 2nd beer of this visit: This SE London stout came with excellent head and lasting lacing from this Bexley microbrewery located in Erith and set up in 2014 and so resurrecting the independent brewing tradition in the Bexley area, which had vanished after the historical Reffells Bexley Brewery, founded in 1874, was acquired and shut down in the late 1950s. Intriguingly, its brewery buildings are still in evidence and form part of the Old Bexley Business Park and can be seen on a walk from Bexley Station to the Dartfordians Community Sports Club in Bourne Road for the annual Bexley Beer Festival. The name itself of this stout is a historical tribute to a local Victorian workhouse once located in Northumberland Heath in the Bexley borough. A dry malty first bite from its dark roasted barleys and crystal malts. A bitter maltiness rising from using traditional English hops, and where Bexley frequently source these from local Kent farms like Hukins, to secure a balancing bitterness. A chocolatey emergence onto my taste buds from the likes of bitter dark chocolate and joined by espresso coffee, liquorice and a touch of sweet toffee. A dark fruited parade also passing over my tongue from such allies as stewed prunes and blackberries. A bitter malty hoppiness sailing out. Served in very good nick with lots of mouthfeel. |

4th visit of this outing to Broadstairs: Too busy to settle in but managed a photograph of the beers. A fellow real ale enthusiast I was with on this visit had been in for a half whilst I had my breakfast locally in a café. Standing room only and so did not sample even one but would have done the Shivering Sands’ Ribersborg Stout which I have much enjoyed before.

3rd visit of the outing: A little just after 2pm and busier than I have seen it at about this time throughout the summer and autumn months. Prompt, friendly service as is customary. A welcome bench seat to be had following my Broadstairs café breakfast and walk around the harbour quay.

The pub is found in Broadstairs, Kent, CT10 1NE.
In Albion Street, initially a micropub conversion from its previous existence as Reef restaurant. Opened in mid February 2019 selling real ales, ciders and keg beers, gins etc. Real ales sold through 3 handpumps on the bar counter and ciders through handpump and boxes in the fridge. Run by beer and cider enthusiasts from west Kent. Corner house with large picture windows on two sides. Furnished with high and low scrubbed top tables. Variety of traditional pub games available. Mainly sells Kentish real ales but from further afield too. In 2022 chose to rebrand itself as an ale house and no longer a micropub.
