I’d managed to forget my last, rather unfavourable, visit here and braved Thursday night crowds for a couple more Wetherspoon festival beers.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Caledonian - Trojan Horse5.50GoodHaving heard that this beer had been voted by some panel or other as the ‘Beer of the Festival’ I was keen to try it. A bit disappointed though. It is a somewhat under-hopped Black IPA. Still good though.
Woodforde's - Tundra4.60GoodA very pale gold ‘White IPA’. Clear, dry, some hop character.

A crowded Wetherspoon pub. I don’t know if I looked particularly suspicious this-evening, but I was required to pay up front, before my pint was pulled. I don’t recall the last time this happened to me in an English pub.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Upham - Fields of Gold3.80PoorA golden beer. Hazy, verging on cloudy. Chilled to the point of tastelessness.

I met up here with a crowd from the local CAMRA Branch who were embarking on a five or six pub crawl around the Island. I don’t have the stamina for that, but would do a couple. Quite busy in here, with most on the terrace outside. £2:45 a pint. A DJ was starting up as it reached time for us to move on.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Burton Bridge - Golden Flame4.50AcceptablePale, with some half decent hops and a touch of apple.
WharfeBank - Golden Pursuit4.00AcceptableGold/amber in colour. Quite dry and bitter.

Filling up well late afternoon on a Thursday.
BeerABVScoreNotes

I imagine my first time impression of this place is totally different to that of the city's afterwork drinkforce. Can imagine it gets uncomfortably busy in here of a summer evening. As it was we headed down on a Sunday at sunset and were served with good beer and decent food promptly and professionally. Being in the midst of the International Real Ale Festival, pints were £2.19 - a fair bit cheaper than normal I'd wager but still at the very top end of JDW's festival price range. I was astounded to be confronted by 18 handpumps AND a two-tier stillage beside the bar housing all of the foreign festival specials. Jackpot!
BeerABVScoreNotes
Marston's - Sinebrychoff Porter6.20ExcellentLove this. Impenetrably black, huge thumping great dark malt hit, fruitcake and hard liquor palate and brutish hop finish.
Flying Dutchman - Wit Bier4.50ExcellentBrewed at Caledonian. Very pale, sweet with orange and coriander spice. Really light and downable - excellent example of the style.
Palm - Steenbrugge Blond6.00ExcellentImported from Belgium. Orange-gold with a tea leaf aroma and initial tea palate, then a bombardment of clementine fruit and mulled spices. Really impressed!
Titanic - Velvet Curtain5.00GoodWas expecting great things and surprised by Ian's previous disappointment. Black with sweet vanilla pod nose, tart bitter stout approach with creamy choc and vanilla flavours building. Good but, yes, a little synthetic.
Springhead - Another Bite of the Cherry4.50GoodRefreshing, bitter with a hint of cherry fruit, not overpowering. Pretty good.
Banks's - Yukon Brewing Lead Dog Ale5.50GoodToasty malts, bitter liquorice finish. Not wholly dissimilar to Sneck Lifter I thought.
Robinsons - Nosey Parker3.80PoorBog standard brown ale.
