Lunchtime. Changed hands since my last visit. Oh dear. Beer well kept, lovely wood burning stove and good decor decor BUT very loud commercial radio being played, barman’s toddler being fed in the main bar area distracting him from serving, two slush puppy machines behind the bar and a huge Carte D’Or freezer in the main bar area. Next quiz night sign - 8th November!
Harvey's - Sussex Best Bitter | 4.00 | | Lovely condition. |
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Pride | 4.10 | Not Tried

Afternoon - a number of drinkers enjoying the sunny courtyard at the rear of the pub. I believe the pub has changed hands this year. Friendly, and an apology that only 3 ales were on (4 handpumps on the bar).
Sambrook's - Watneys Starlight | 4.00 | | Single hop Amarillo - very drinkable. |
Greene King - IPA (was 3.6%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Black Sheep - Best Bitter | 3.80 | Not Tried

En route back to Canterbury and haven't been in here for a few years. Quiet Monday evening. Rather dissapointed that the first pint was so awful, visually and by smell but not noticed by the bar staff. Happily changed (by the manager?) - hopefully not typical as there is a beer festival here this weekend 28-30 July. There is an interesting area at the back in and around an old barn that is being prepared for the event.
Banks's - Wainwright | 4.10
Marston's - 61 Deep | 3.80 | | Clearly, well opaquely actually, the sludge at the end of the barrel. I'm surprised that someone must have drunk the pint before this without commenting.
Taken off and a new barrel of Wainright's replaced it after some shenanigans from the bar staff - all done in good spirit though. |
Harvey's - Sussex Best Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried
Black Sheep - Best Bitter | 3.80 | Not Tried

Passed here Friday morning and saw there was a beer fest on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I was free Friday afternoon so obvious really. A good selection of ale from IPA and APA to stouts, plus ciders. Worth a visit if you are near. All the beers were in excellent condition. I would just add I shared most of the beers tasted with Rosemary and did not consume the lot. Also tried a cider - Gwynt Y Ddraig. Farmhouse Scrumpy (7.2%) delicious!
Wentworth - Oyster Stout | 4.80 | | Very nice everything a stout should be, rich and dark roast and caramal and coffee. |
Summer Wine (SWB) - Diablo | 6.00 | | A strong IPA, golden with strong citrus notes and a long dry finish, possibly my best beer of the day. |
Saltaire - Stateside IPA | 6.00 | | Full bodied American IPA. Hops are stunning but not harsh or out of balance, a super beer. |
Summer Wine (SWB) - Barista Expresso Stout | 4.80 | | Similar to the Wentworth Oyster but more coffee and a dryer finish |
Beartown (latterly part of Manning Brewers) - Black Bear | 5.00 | | Dark bitter, hint of roast with a little liqourice. |
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | | Hophead from Darkstar, nothing to add really, super. |
Anglo-Dutch - Tabatha The Knackered | 6.00 | | Not always a fan of Belgian style beers but I liked this, the tasting notes say it all, A Belgian trippel beer style, strong and fruity with a hoppy and bitter chacter |
Ossett - Excelsius (was Excelsior) | 5.20 | | Lovely, lots of hops,citrusy and really nice. |
Nottingham - Dreadnought | 4.50 | | Ruby bitter, rich and well balanced, good hop depth. |

Came for the beer festival and managed to blag a lift from a non beer drinking friend. 20 beers to choose from several unknown to me.
Adnams - Southwold Bitter | 3.70 | | Finished with a pint of this from the bar, nice and classic Adnams but would have been better without the sparkler. |
Black Hole - BHB | 3.80 | | My beer of the evening, a gold bitter, hoppy with an intense finish. |
Spire - Dark Side of the Moon | 4.30 | | Darkish bitter, slightly sweet with a good hop balance. |
