24 Oct 2024 (Philip Pirrip)
Shortish lunchtime session with old work colleagues. Not impressed with any of the beers here.
Stroud - Budding Pale Ale | 4.50 | | Disappointing, rather sour and almost no head and lacing. Pretty flat |
By The Horns - Green Hop Monster 2024 - Pale Ale | 4.50 | | Initial promise soon dissipated to a rather flat pint |
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Pride | 4.10 | Not Tried
Big Smoke - Solaris Session Pale | 3.80 | Not Tried
Full Circle - Repeater | 4.20 | Not Tried
Brew York - Clifford's Red IPA | 4.90 | Not Tried
Brentwood - Beer Outta Hell | 4.80 | Not Tried
09 Nov 2023 (Philip Pirrip)
Long afternoon session in the front room with an office reunion, with seemingly no one aged one iota since last meet up.
Dark Star - Revelation | 5.70 | | Good strong hit of flavour but where and by whom is it now brewed |
Brew York - Maris the Otter | 3.90 | | Lost a bit as the pint went down. More coffee and toffee than the bitter it is badged as |
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Pride | 4.10 | Not Tried
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - Red Fox | 4.30 | Not Tried
Brew York - Calmer Chameleon (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | Not Tried | Another watered down beer - to save on beer duty, but not reflected in reduced price to the consumer |
Exale - Skoosh | 4.20 | Not Tried | I could see from others this was a murk so best avoided |
24 Jul 2023 (Philip Pirrip)
An impulse evening visit until close. Could not have been better with low Monday footfall of hardened cask men in the front small snug room. 20% CAMRA discount significantly softens the price blow to normality.
Iron Pier - Best Bitter | 4.80 | | In fine form |
Dark Star - Galaxy Haze | 6.50 | | A full bodied bitter with subtle, not citrus, hopping. Very little if any haze. Even a last out of the cask was spot on |
Billericay (large volume beers brewed at Brentwood) - Billericay Blonde | 4.00 | | OK but thin gruel kept well |
Windsor & Eton - Guardsman | 4.20 | Not Tried | Being served from the wood and a taster was rather sharp |
Caveman (latterly a cuckoo at Leatherbritches) - Palaeolithic | 3.80 | Not Tried | Produced by goodness knows who at goodness knows where these days so a no go |
Brentwood - Galaxy | 4.40 | Not Tried

Little Critters - Coco Nutter | 6.00 | Not Tried
24 Jun 2021 (Magnus Greel)
Mid afternoon fairly quiet but not so in noise levels as we were allocated a table in the rear bar with a bunch of SAGA louts enjoying a beer or 2 but I'll let em off for that!
Oakham - JHB | 3.80 | | |
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Pride | 4.10
Adnams - Broadside | 4.70 | Not Tried
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | Not Tried
16 Apr 2021 (Magnus Greel)
Table booked (or should I say beer barrel as we were located in the alley) which was essential today as many groups came and went during our stay. Superb service and friendly welcome we were fine to stay much longer than our booked 3pm departure (they knew our organiser was coming, a certain Mr Chris E)!
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Pride | 4.10 | | Decided to stay loyal to this as it was most enjoyable. |
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | Not Tried

Three of us met here with outside space reserved for two hours although we eventually stayed a little longer than that. The two outside service areas soon became very busy but service was quick, efficient and friendly. The kitchen is currently closed so wet sales and packets of crisps only at the moment. Neck Oil seemed a popular choice today but we stuck to the cask ales.
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Pride | 4.10 | | So good that we never got around to trying the Hophead. |
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | Not Tried
08 May 2019 (Stephen Harris)
First stop on a pubcrawl of classic pubs of the area. The Lounge is initially fairly quiet and it's a good opportunity to absorb the timeless ambiance of this pub (the interior is largely 1920s, rather than the sometimes-claimed 1620s).
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Crackendale | 5.20 | | Very pale with excellent hop flavours. |
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - London Pride | 4.10 | Not Tried
Kelham Island (probably brewed by Thornbridge now) - Pale Rider | 5.20 | Not Tried
Abbeydale - Moonshine | 4.30 | Not Tried
Adnams - Ghost Ship | 4.50 | Not Tried
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - Oliver's Island | 3.80 | Not Tried
07 Aug 2017 (ChrisE)

Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - Frontier | 4.50 | Not Tried
