First real ale in 30 days after Tenerife and with a blood test beckoning. Camra Saturday crawl around Walmer and Deal.13 of us. So far. 3 ales on, lots of Green hops and shivering sands to come on later.
Wantsum - Black Pig | 4.80 | | A good pint to start with at £4.10 a pint. |
09 May 2024 (Jack William)
Lunchtime visit - bus pass outing. Six of us enjoyed a good session with excellent fish and chips brought in. Hadn’t noticed the huge whale jaw bone before - found on the beach by the landlord apparently. Chap in a George Best t-shirt bemoaning Man Utd’s recent form. Both he and the t-shirt looked a bit worse for wear.
Shivering Sands - Ribersborg Stout | 4.70 | | A wonderfully rich, creamy stout |
Shivering Sands - Searchlight IPA | 4.20 | | A lovely pint. |
Shivering Sands - Timeball | 4.30
Milestone - Doilem | 4.50 | | Just a taster - the cartoon of Trump on the pump clip nearly put me off - the murkiness of this “hazy” pale ale did. |
09 Nov 2023 (Jack William)
Bus pass Thursday group visit to this old favourite. 8 of us at just after noon, a friendly welcome and we enjoyed fish and chips from next door as well as a good variety of beers.
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - War Horse | 4.00 | | Beautiful “brown ale” pint. |
Northdown - Pale Ale Mary | 4.00
Titsey - Green & Gold | 4.20 | Not Tried
Northdown - Tidal Pool | 4.60 | Not Tried | Didn’t go down well with others due mainly to its soupy appearance. There’s unfined and there’s opaque. |

Late afternoon, very well patronised at least a dozen in. Good to see this micro thriving, I think it’s one of the best and still true to the original micro ethos.
Adnams - Evening Gleams (collaboration with Verdant) | 4.20 | | Beautiful pint, rich and full bodied American Red Rye IPA. |
Adnams - Old Ale | 4.10 | Not Tried
Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - The Friar's Ale | 4.30 | Not Tried
Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - Green & Black Green Hop | 4.00 | Not Tried

One of the few micro pubs that are not only open all day but on Mondays too so we took advantage of this and and enjoyed a lunchtime session working our way through the menu!
Angels & Demons (now uses McCanns branding not its own) - Haunted Beauty | 6.50 | | 'Scarily' moorish delicious silky smooth nectar with hints of roasted coffee and chocolate. Tentatively ordered just a half for the road but could have easily downed a pint or three.. |
Kent - California Leaning | 5.00 | | A full-on, hoppy IPA with grapefruit and other citrus fruit flavours topped off with characteristic bitterness, pine and resin. |
Stonehenge - Great Bustard | 4.80 | | Deliciously fruity and malty with a lingering bitter aftertaste. |
Shivering Sands - Spring Tide | 3.80 | | A light refreshing session ale with citrus undertones. |

Lunchtime bus-pass outing. 7 of us had the pub to ourselves until 1:30 when a few locals turned up. Good variety of ales and excellent service.
Iron Pier - Bitter | 4.00 | | |
Hop Fuzz - American | 4.20
Time and Tide - Walmer Patchwork Pale Ale | 3.70 | | An unfined and cloudy, fruity beer with a good body for a low strength beer. |
Kissingate - Black Cherry Mild En Plus | 6.50 | | Badged at 7.0%. Sickly sweetness rather spoiled it. Our octogenarian member managed a full pint however. |
Wantsum - Golgotha | 5.50 | Not Tried
08 Sep 2022 (Jack William)
Afternoon session for our 2nd Thursday group. 6 of us with just two or three others in. Good vibe.
Musket - Trigger | 3.60 | | Fresh on and in superb condition. Very flavoursome for a 3.6. |
Breakwater - Cow Juice | 4.20 | | Far too sweet for my liking but the dark ale old boys seemed to like it. |
Northdown - Tidal Pool | 4.60 | | Unfined- and extremely cloudy. Last one out before the barrel was changed but it seemed drinkable nonetheless. |
Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - Single Hop Jester | 4.60 | Not Tried | Badged as Single Hop Jester Gold at 4.0%. Hard to keep up with the varying output from Canterbury Ales at the moment |
Iron Pier - Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried
12 May 2022 (Jack William)
Second Thursday bus-pass group here for our monthly get together. 8 of us - excellent session, we outnumbered the locals for a couple of hours.
A lovely looking Porter from Four Candles also on, Pecan Porter at 4.3%
Pig & Porter - Skylarking | 4.00 | | Very popular with most of the group. |
Laine - Brighton (North Laine) - Bestest Bitter | 4.30
Pig & Porter - Forever Lost | 5.30 | | Great body with a full flavour. New barrel on and could have done with a little bit more settling time. |
02 Feb 2022 (Magnus Greel)
Met a couple of friends in here for a relaxed and enjoyable lunchtime session. On the ball barmaid needed no encouragement to refill our empty glasses.
Old Dairy (being contract brewed after it closed) - Blue Top | 4.80
Pig & Porter - All These Vibes | 5.30 | | Full on tropical fruity broth |
Four Candles - Fuggles Bitter | 4.50 | | Refreshingly not over bitter. As usual for the 4C's brews the ABV varies, this was marked up as 4.3 |
Shivering Sands - Ribersborg Stout | 4.70 | Not Tried
Old Dairy (being contract brewed after it closed) - Breakfast Stout | 6.00 | Not Tried
23 Jan 2020 (Jack William)
