Late afternoon visit and fairly quiet. Drag shows seem to be very popular in here. I was pleased to discover that half pints are always charged at half the price of a pint.

An evening visit for beer and pizza.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Three Sods - Dark Magus4.70GoodQuite dry for a Milk Stout I think.
One Mile End Brew Co. (formerly Mulligans at the White Hart and then WH Brew Pub) - Salvation! Pale Ale4.40AcceptableRather flat condition detracted from this beer.

This pub now has a pizza kitchen and the lounge has several tables of pizza-eaters. The 8pm call for the start of the quiz however attracts little interest.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Signature Brew - B-Side4.70GoodA heavy Brown Ale.

Early evening and the pub is unexpectedly crowded. Indian food is a big draw on Tuesdays, and the fact that Leyton Orient have a match this-evening means the Public Bar is rammed.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Five Points - XPA4.00ExcellentThis beer seems to have made the transition to cask format very well.

Early evening and the Public Bar is full, so I tread the unfamiliar carpet of the Lounge. As seems now to be the norm here, the real ale selection is entirely east London-brewed.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Signature Brew - Extra Pale Ale (E.P.)3.50ExcellentA really good, fruity, Pale Ale. Signature do seem to be on an upward curve.
Crate - Red Ale4.10GoodI’m not a lover of Red Ales, but the completist in me said that I should risk a pint. It is malt-driven and fruity, rather than the sweetness I feared.
Five Points - Brick Field Brown5.40Not Tried

Mid-evening visit. The pub is pleasingly busy. There is a vegetarian food stall in the back yard. Some local folkies are sawing away on their fiddles in the public bar and an assortment of friends and acquaintances are present. This pub could so easily become my local once again.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Crate - Golden Ale3.80ExcellentOn particularly good form here.
Five Points - Brick Field Brown5.40ExcellentServed with a very creamy texture.
East London (ELB) - Walthamstow Beer – Green-hopped Dark Ale4.50ExcellentA satisfying, dark Bitter. Not obviously a green hop beer from its taste.

I’ve been hearing many good things about this pub and am pleased to note its inclusion in the Good Beer Guide. An excellent East London beer range tonight and a nice atmosphere here.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Five Points - XPA4.00ExcellentA very pale, hazy gold. This is a gorgeous, smooth, hoppy pint that is not often seen in cask format.
Crate - Golden Ale3.80GoodA nicely-balanced Golden Ale.

This was my first local pub when I moved to Leyton 25 years ago – indeed it was the only pub I knew in these parts from before I lived here – but I’ve grown out of the habit of coming here. Great to see the pub so well-revived after a dark period in its history.
BeerABVScoreNotes

The pub is found in Leytonstone, Greater London, E11 4EL.

This pub opened in September 1886, when the area was first developed, and was described as a ‘hotel’ in its earliest years. It was initially a Savill Brothers Brewery pub, passing to Charrington’s when Savills closed down in 1925. The pub still maintains a separation of Public and Saloon bars, although the divisions have been opened up a little and the furnishing of the Public Bar is distinctly more comfortable than it used to be. The former off-sales bar at the back is now converted into a little snug. Very much a community pub, with plenty of local groups meeting here and a range of live events. From 2019, a pizza and pasta kitchen is operating from the old stables at the rear. Five handpumps on the bar. Local CAMRA branch Pub of the Year 2020.

We have visited this pub 10 times, seen 25 different beers and tried 16 of them.
