A Potterers cycle gathering - I wasn’t sure that I could make the 32 mile round trip after my exertions yesterday - but the wind helped me here and a couple of pints helped me get back home. Half a dozen of us had the raised area to the left of the bar. Friendly place.
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | | First rate. |
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Bombardier (was Bombardier Glorious English) (use Eagle entry now please) | 4.10
Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - The Wife of Bath's Ale | 3.90 | Not Tried
03 Mar 2017 (Philip Pirrip)
Evening, my first visit here. We sat at a table surrounded by diners, loud talkers and for me the off-putting smell of fish. Not one to linger long at.
Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - The Miller's Ale (originally 4.5%) | 4.20
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Sharp's - Doom Bar | 4.00 | Not Tried
10 Jan 2015 (Jack William)
Lunchtime - just before 32 diners arrived apparently - but kindly fitted us in for a meal all the same. A nice feel to the place with a few drinkers at the bar. Food very nice but a bit small and pricey I thought.
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | | Reasonable example - but not at its best. |
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Wells A Good Stuffing | 4.50 | | A slight whiff of staleness - some Christmassy notes in this amber coloured ale. |
Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - The Knight's Ale | 4.60 | Not Tried
21 Dec 2014 (Brian)
Warm, cosy inside. Bleak winter solstice outside. Really nice feel to this pub.
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | | 2 pints of this bench mark hoppy low strength ale. |
Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - The Wife of Bath's Ale | 3.90 | Not Tried
Marston's - Cinder's Doppelganger | 4.00 | Not Tried
25 Jan 2014 (Brian)
First visit to this pub and really impressed. It seems to have the balance right between a place where locals can go for a pint, but where occasional visitors feel comfortable too. The staff were very friendly and efficient. Must go back soon.
Dark Star - Hophead was 3.8% (some has also been brewed by Fuller's) | 3.40 | | Not the Hophead of old as many have already said, but still excellent as far as I'm concerned. |
Caledonian - Auld Acquaintance | 4.40 | Not Tried
Goody Ales - Bleangate Brewery - Good Heavens | 4.10 | Not Tried
Cottage - Rorke's Drift | 4.30 | Not Tried
06 Oct 2013 (Andrew)
Came here for 15 mins as it was around the corner from where we had just had lunch. Isabel enjoyed the kid's play area.
Ripple Steam - Original Best Bitter | 4.10 | | Touch flat. Reedy malt with a hint of leafy bitterness |
Banks's - Ringwood Fortyniner | 4.90 | Not Tried
Canterbury Ales (sometimes badged as Canterbrew) - The Wife of Bath's Ale | 3.90 | Not Tried
Wantsum - One Hop Green | 4.50 | Not Tried
22 Jan 2005 (Andrew)
We visited the pub at lunch time and found a very friendly atmosphere with many dinners and a few locals at the bar.
Fuller's (part of Asahi Europe) - Swing Low (was 4.1% when Gale's Swing Low) | 3.50 | | A slightly nutty dark brown bitter that sank well. |
Shepherd Neame - Master Brew Bitter | 3.70 | | Perhaps a better name for this beer would be "Adequate Brew" |
Greene King - Morland Old Speckled Hen | 4.50 | Not Tried
Wadworth - Henry's Original IPA | 3.60 | Not Tried | Was going to try it but the bloke at the next table didn't rate it much so I gave it a miss |
