Mid Saturday afternoon and there was nothing better to do. Still can't find a place better than this in centre of Ashford.
Daleside - Old Lubrication | 4.10 | | Decent biscuity mid brown bitter. Fine, if nothing to make me want a second pint of it. |

Very impressed with the line up today, two beers I actually enjoy drinking. Still waiting for the Oakham Bishop's Farewell to come on though, the Available Soon sign has now been up for 5 days....So I asked when it was coming on and the beers with Available Soon signs were old beers already that had been on and the next 2 beers due on Cotleigh Osprey and a Tom Wood beer weren't even advertised. What a way to run a pub, I don't know.
Oakleaf (now see Fallen Acorn entries) - Hole Hearted | 4.70 | | 5 years ago I loved this beer. Then came the hop shortage and my perceived level of Cascade hops dropped. Now? It's getting back to its best. Bit earthy on aroma, but then decent fullness in mouth and a decent hit of Cascade hop on the end. Hoppy, certainly for a UK beer. |
Triple fff - Moondance | 4.20 | | Very decent best bitter. I like the biscuit malts on the finish especially. |
Elgood's - Black Dog Mild | 3.60 | | Maybe just a touch of diacetyl butter/toffee takes the edge off the enjoyment, but still a very tasty dark mild. |
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Greene King - Ruddles Best (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | Not Tried

I fancied a pint after work and it was either here or going out to the Hoodeners Horse in Great Chart which I might do tomorrow. I bumped into Whinger and a friend here and we drank some beers and chatted about pubs and beer
B&T (Banks & Taylor's) - Shefford Old Dark (SOD) | 5.00 | | Really lovely burnt flavours especially the burnt roasted dryness on the finish giving a good harsh bitter finish. Some choc coffee and charcoal with a little smoke. Good fullness in the mouth as well. It's what we all finished with as the best beer of the evening. |
Greene King - Abbot Reserve | 6.50 | | A little bit of butter on the aroma, but the malts got very biscuity towards the end of the pint and overall a very satisfying strong beer that hides it's higher ABV well. |
Hilden - Gael Rua | 4.30 | | Nothing off here, but the aroma is very earthy and the flavour reminded me of licking the head of a safety match. Not great and to be honest I struggled to finish even a half of the pint I had ordered. Disappointing. |

Sunday afternoon. I plugged in my laptop for 3 hours and had a wonderful time drinking Oakham Bishops Farewell and geeking out on the net.
Oakham - Bishops Farewell | 4.60 | | What a fantastic beer. Just a little down on perfection as I think it had been on for a day or two, but even still the hops are fabulous. |

After Whinger's favourable ratings of the beers from yesterday, what could I do but come in for a couple of pints? Also they have free wifi which I think all pubs should do. Oh and I just found out I won a free case of beer today, so I couldn't be happier.
Brewster's - Ice Queen | 4.80 | | Lovely blond beer using 2 of my favourite hop varieties, Chinook and Cascade. As always, they could have chucked a few more Chinooks in for my tastebuds, but they are damned expensive. Anyway, really quaffable, very enjoyable, good pale malts and then this really good hop kick. Plus I really like the pump clip. |
Inveralmond - Ossian's Ale | 4.10 | | Malty blond beer, with just a hint of tea flavour to it. I must admit I did prefer the Ice Queen this has a little diacetyl on the aroma. I can't get enough of those Chinook and Cascade hops |

If only this pub was always as good as it was on this occasion. Two guest ales on, and both in good condition, good service, and a most enjoyable visit.
Inveralmond - Ossian's Ale | 4.10 | | One of my favourite beers, and this was superb. |
Brewster's - Ice Queen | 4.80
Greene King - IPA (was 3.6%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Greene King - Ruddles Best (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | Not Tried

Popped in after work to type up some pub visits and broke my laptop power connection tripping over the cable, serves me right for trying to be clever. Then the Wolvers Ale wasn't very good, the Warwickshire beer had been on for ages, so I was forced to resort to drinking Abbot Ale. Oh the iniquity of life.
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | | It's fine. Some of that distinctive GK yeast, but at least it has some hop sting on the finish. |
Newmans - Wolvers Ale | 4.10 | | Barely acceptable as getting tired I think. |

Local CAMRA branch meeting. It's nice to be in this pub with a group of people. Decent beer, decent service and interesting pub chat.
Warwickshire - Churchyard Bob | 4.90 | | I thought a very sessionable malty brown bitter. Like wot used to be made in Britain. |
Coach House - Flintlock Pale Ale | 4.40 | | Just a bit of burnt rubber on this, but otherwise I still finished my pint. |
24 Jan 2010 (Ian)
I came for more of the haggis for my tea, but they had run out. So I sat by the window typing this and playing music very loudly through my headphones to drown out the crying babies.
Stonehenge - Pigswill | 4.00 | | It's an ok bitter with some very slight biscuit digestive flavour on the malts and some finishing hop sting. OK. |
22 Jan 2010 (Ian)
The Burns Night beers were getting to me so I stopped off here to see if any more were on and one was.
Salopian - Prohibition | 4.60 | | I had this in the Babington Spoons in Derby last year and remember liking it, so had it again. Sherbery US hops on aroma. It's a decent and a lot better than your average golden ale, but I still want more hop especially on the finish. Slight touch of soap on the hop. |
Caledonian - Auld Acquaintance | 4.40 | | Chestnut colour, lasting beige head. Malty aroma without diacetyl!! Decent mid brown malty beer. No huge hop. Perhaps this is a Scottish Ale? Touch of sting on tip of tongue on finish. Tastes fresh though. Some toffee. It's fine. Even some attractive toffee malt. |
