24 Jan 2010 (Ian)
I came for more of the haggis for my tea, but they had run out. So I sat by the window typing this and playing music very loudly through my headphones to drown out the crying babies.
Stonehenge - Pigswill | 4.00 | | It's an ok bitter with some very slight biscuit digestive flavour on the malts and some finishing hop sting. OK. |
22 Jan 2010 (Ian)
The Burns Night beers were getting to me so I stopped off here to see if any more were on and one was.
Salopian - Prohibition | 4.60 | | I had this in the Babington Spoons in Derby last year and remember liking it, so had it again. Sherbery US hops on aroma. It's a decent and a lot better than your average golden ale, but I still want more hop especially on the finish. Slight touch of soap on the hop. |
Caledonian - Auld Acquaintance | 4.40 | | Chestnut colour, lasting beige head. Malty aroma without diacetyl!! Decent mid brown malty beer. No huge hop. Perhaps this is a Scottish Ale? Touch of sting on tip of tongue on finish. Tastes fresh though. Some toffee. It's fine. Even some attractive toffee malt. |
18 Jan 2010 (Ian)
If it wasn't for the fact that the Titanic Black Ice was still on and I didn't drink enough of it yesterday, I wouldn't have been here. But it was on, so I had to have 3 pints of it. I sat by the front window listening to Just A Minute, drinking one of my favourite all time beers.
Titanic - Black Ice | 4.10 | | I wish I could say why this beer is so good. Aroma is just right in terms of roasted malt and a little bit of hop, but it's not a big or huge aroma, the body though is where it wins so well, the mouthfeel is simply sublime, I don't know any other dark beer that has such a great blend of dry malts and roasted malts and juiciness. Then the finish has a little hop, a little black cherry. As I say I don't know a beer like it. |
17 Jan 2010 (Ian)
I forgot to bring the right lead to link my mobile phone to my laptop, so I spent a very frustrating 20 mins trying to get my phone to talk to my laptop via Bluetooth (who is some kind of Norse god I think) so I could upload some pub photos. Anyway, pretty quiet which I was happy with plus one of my all time favourite beers on.
Titanic - Black Ice | 4.10 | | 8 years since I last had it and it is still one of the best dark beers I've ever had. Good choc, black cherry, good solid choc cake sponge like malts, decent burnt finish. |
Skinner's - Figgy's Brew | 4.50 | | Odd I've never had this before. Copper amber colour, with a thin off white head. Not diacetyl on aroma, but certainly lots of toffee and fudge. Soft in the mouth, with more fudge. The finish is soft and not very hoppy. It's ok, but the Titanic Black Ice I had next to it blew it out of the water. |
13 Jan 2010 (Ian)
Still waiting for the Titanic Black Ice to come on. I sat by the window and used the wifi (once I had worked out how to disable my home wifi system) and did some surfing whilst having a couple of pints. Very pleasant early evening.
Three B's - Pinch Noggin' | 4.60 | | It was fine, a bit too malty and the honey made it a bit sweet, but I drank 3 pints of it and it was absolutely fine. |
10 Jan 2010 (Ian)
Sunday lunchtime. I came in for an aperatif before Sunday lunch. Smattering of regulars in. The Titanic Black Ice is due on next according to the bar manager so I might have to go back tonight to see if it is as good as I remember it being.
Tring - Side Pocket for a Toad | 3.60 | Not Tried | |
31 Dec 2009 (Ian)
I hoped for something interesting but all I got was Hobgoblin. I sat by the window and listened to Collins and Herring podcast and watched the youths having a fight outside the KFC opposite. Arh, you gotta love Ashford town centre.
Marston's - Wychwood Hobgoblin IPA (was Ruby Beer, was Hobgoblin) | 4.50 | | Barely acceptable, but nothing wrong with it, lacked a bit of condition, but unmistakable Wychwood yeast and Hobgoblin taste. Completely forgettable mind. |
27 Dec 2009 (Ian)
Popped in for one on my way to lunch with my mother and sister.
Jennings (since closure now brewed at Marston's) - Sneck Lifter | 5.10 | | One of my favourite dark beers. |
31 Oct 2009 (Pedro)
lunchtime
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Galbraith's Mr.G's Luncheon Ale | 3.70 | | nice beer in ok form |
28 Oct 2009 (Ian)
First day of beer festival so came to see what was on. Which wasn't very much and the best beer wasn't even on at the festival.
Grainstore - Tupping Ale | 4.50 | | Really good biscuit malt bitter, with decent yeast character and ok hop. Could have drunk this all night and been still extremely happy at the end of the night with this beer. Good fullness of flavour in mouth and really good condition. |
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Galbraith's Mr.G's Luncheon Ale | 3.70 | | Brown colour, lasting off white head. Not much aroma. Some soft hop and yeast and soft fruit. Some almost spice in the flavour which carries in onto the finish. Very good condition. Some hop sting on finish. Very drinkable. OK bitter. |
