12 Oct 2009 (Ian)
Came in to ask for Thornbridge Jaipur to be re-ordered as it is a guest this quarter. Had a couple of quick halves whilst listening to the Collings and Herrin podcast.
Batemans - Combined Harvest | 4.70 | | Copper bitter colour, lasting this beige. Bit of caramel on aroma. Bit of diacetyl maybe. Good condition though. Bit of green apple on the flavour. It's an ok bitter, does what a bitter would as you would expect, but didn't jump out at you. Not even in a really competent bitter way. |
Moorhouse's - Premier Bitter (was 3.8%) | 3.70 | | It's an ok bitter, some hop on finish giving a sting on the tongue. Bit of farty yeast on aroma, some decent fruit in mouth. OK |
19 Sep 2009 (Ian)
Saturday lunchtime and usual mix of shoppers with their families and the hard drinking lags at the back
Oakham - Mompesson's Gold (superseded by 5.2% version - see separate entry) | 5.00 | | Haven't had this in years. It has the necessary Oakham hop and a bit more depth and body than usual due to the higher ABV. Went down very easily and very well. May be back later today for another. |
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Marston's - Pedigree | 4.50 | Not Tried
Greene King - Ruddles Best (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Beartown (latterly part of Manning Brewers) - Bear Ass | 4.00 | Not Tried
13 Sep 2009 (Ian)
My first rating in a pub using my new internet phone. Ok the phone bit does not work in that no one can phone me but i can do this. Awesome. Quiet sunday lunchtime
Greene King - Bonkers Conkers | 4.10 | | This was actually pretty good with only slight GK yeast aroma some decent bitter malt in middle and definite hoppy bite on finish. Very drinkable bitter. Must be the new phone it is affecting my taste. |
10 Jul 2009 (Ian)
Popped in for a drink after work and listened to the cricket on the radio.
Saltaire - Bavarian Gold | 4.20 | | Gold, lasting white head. Not sure if it has a lager yeast, but I guess lager hops. OK, but something not quite right. Lager in mouth, ale hop on finish. |
28 Jun 2009 (Ian)
I just don't believe the coming soon signs on the pump clips as they are rarely correct these days. 3 beers were coming soon on Thursday, all dissappeared by Sunday to be replaced by 2 beers that weren't even advertised. Bizarre. But they do an ok breakfast and there is free Wifi
Titanic - Iceberg | 4.10 | | Really very drinkable and if my laptop battery had not run out, I would have stayed for more. |
Vale - Wychert | 3.90 | Not Tried
24 Jun 2009 (Ian)
Oakham White Dwarf coming on soon, do I need to say any more???
Ramsbury - Hells Highway | 3.80 | | Poured a hazy russet and I must admit I was in two minds as to whether to give it back to the barman as the end of the barrel. Some fruit on aroma. Raspberry, bit of diacetyl. Really some hop on finish. Some butter/diacetyl in mouth. Classic good condition. Really not sure if this should taste like this. It reminds me of a fruit pie but not entirely in a good way. It’s pretty terrible to be honest but with hints of greatness. Had to leave a half of a pint. |
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Marston's - Pedigree | 4.50 | Not Tried
Greene King - Ruddles Best (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Caledonian - XPA | 4.30 | Not Tried
14 Jun 2009 (Ian)
Not too busy mid Sunday afternoon. I sat in the rear and listened to the cricket on my portable DAB radio, possibly the best thing in the world.
Brewster's - Daffy Elixir | 4.20 | | Very pale gold, lasting thin white head. Goodish blond ale. Bit of nut and then some very nice hop on end. Creat condition. Its a slightly better than average blond. |
Rooster's - Oakey Cream | 4.70 | | Gold, thin cream head. A sweetish bitter. Some rose petal. Some hop on end. Looking forward to this as I like Roosters, but not too interesting. Yes some red fruits. Good condition. Ok and some of it is a bit dusty on the malt. |
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Marston's - Pedigree | 4.50 | Not Tried
Greene King - Ruddles Best (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
31 May 2009 (Ian)
I hadn't been for a bit so I was hoping that something I like might be on and it was. Also, the Cotleigh Golden Seahawk and Butcombe Gold were being advertised as being Available Soon so I might have to drop in on my way home from work a couple of times this week.
Salopian - Darwin's Origin | 4.30 | | Just as hoppy as when I had it in The Society Rooms in Maidstone. I swear there is something like Simcoe hops in this, something PNW American anyway. So drinkable, but I could only have one as the ironing at home was calling me. |
Marston's - Pedigree | 4.50 | Not Tried
Greene King - Ruddles Best (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
Naylor's - Original | 3.90 | Not Tried
20 May 2009 (Ian)
Just passing through and the long anticipated Oakleaf beer was on at last after being advertised for about 10 days before.
Oakleaf (now see Fallen Acorn entries) - Pompey Royal | 4.50 | | I had this back in SIBA beer festival at Paddock Wood last year and remembered it being far hoppier. This was good, lots of yeast character, and I drank 3 pints of it, so I must have liked it, but just not how I remember it. |
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Greene King - Ruddles Best (was 3.7%) | 3.40 | Not Tried
07 May 2009 (Ian)
Just popped in on my way home from work
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Epic Brewing Pale Ale | 5.00 | | A lot better than when I had this at the start of the festival. Still could do with a few more hops for a very good pale ale, I still knocked back 3 of these in 50 mins so must have been good. |
