Well my 5 day holiday was about to start so I had to celebrate didn't I? Bumped into Chris Exell at the bar who had been on a day out with Roger Marples to Faversham. Then Phil Lowry turned up.
Banks's - Yukon Brewing Lead Dog Ale | 5.50 | | Very drnkable ESB style beer. |
Bend Brewing - Wild Blue Yonder | 4.80 | | Just thinking about what this beer could have been makes me depressed. |
26 Apr 2009 (Ian)
Back for more festival beers which I drank quickly and then left
Theakston - Cooper's Butt | 4.30 | | Copper gold colour with lasting beige head. It’s a slightly fruity bitter. Ok hop on finish. Bit of apple/yeast on aroma. Some fruit in mouth. Ok |
Skinner's - Hunny Bunny | 4.50 | | Copper/gold, lasting cream head. Definite honey throughout gives a pleasing sweetness. Very good condition. Drinkable enough bitter, with a honey edge. Fine. |

Walked through as my lift drops me at the back of the pub. Here to see if anything new/interesting from the beer festival.
St Georgenbrau - Kellerbier | 4.90 | | Cask condition lager through a handpull is a bit of an oddity, but I do like this beer. Really quite hoppy on finish. I found it very more-ish, even a bit shandyish I suppose. |

Hadn't been for 4 days, so wanted to see if any new festival beers were on. Sat and listened to the 6 o'clock news on the radio whilst my Iceland dinner slowly defrosted in my bag.
Elgood's - CXXX | 4.20 | | Very faint waft of diacetyl that most people would just have down as caramel, I'm sure. Even still I do like this bitter. Very biscuity malts. Very drinkable, in fact if my food wasn't defrosting I would have stayed for another. Oh and the radio news was too depressing. |

Ummm festival was on. I didn't need any other excuse.
Banks's - Yukon Brewing Lead Dog Ale | 5.50 | | Very dark brown with lasting beige head. It’s a bit like an ESB/Dark ale, some toasty roasty malts. Some decent fruits. Some ok hop. Nice coffee hints. I like the malts and fruit. |

I figured a couple of the festival beers would be on early and I was right. The comical thing was that no one knew what to charge me. Was it a guest ale or did the price it as a festival beer even though the festival didn't start until the next day. I got charged 2 different prices for the same beer. Cool.
Barons - Bush Berry Porter | 4.50 | | Black, very dark brown. Lasting thick cream head. Certainly a pretty looking beer. Really quite a tasty toasted roast malt beer. Yes not perfect and maybe not showy but I like this over soemthing like Guinness. Has elements of a dry Irish stout. Yes some dark dark fruit in there some milk choc and this dry powder charcoal edge. Some creamy ness in mouth. Yes pretty good. |
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Epic Brewing Pale Ale | 5.00 | | Yes, nice hoppy aroma, but just a bit watery in mouth and the hops are just too cheesy. Its ok but the malt and hops let it down, too watery on malt and too much cheese on hops. Attractive copper colour lasting white head. Grapefruit leafy hop aroma, ok caramel malt in mouth |

I just wanted to come somewhere quiet and read my book over a couple of beers, but the woman next to me wanted to make idle chit chat. Mind you I did get about 60 pages read, so I was quite happy.
Triple fff - Alton's Pride | 3.80 | | I had 4 pints so it must have been pretty good. |
02 Apr 2009 (Ian)
A few beers advertised as coming soon, but not much actually on. Had to move seats as some annoying people were playing awful music from a tinny mobile on the table.
Otter - Bright | 4.30 | | Pale gold, lasting white head, makes it look like a lager. Nice enough, soft in mouth, some grapefruit. Bit of juiciness, just enough hop. Decent |

Virtually no point putting what else was on as I have no idea as there are pump clips up, but no beer. Until Tim Martin gets proper beer people into his pubs as managers, there will be places like this where you queue for 10 minutes for a beer just to be told that it isn't on. Farce. Imagine shopping at a supermarket, putting all of the things in your trolley and then going to the checkout to be told, "oh I'm sorry that's not available," not sure how long they would be in business for. I still get strange looks from the smokers for sitting outside in the cold just so I can get reception on my pocket DAB digital radio of the cricket from the Caribbean, but what the heck? Oh and just about the only pub in Ashford where I might get something interesting beerwise.
Palm - Palm | 5.20 | | One of those Belgian beers, that JDW get in a cask. Hazy gold, lasting thin white head. Not much evidence of a Belgian yeast. Some ok fruit. Not much evidence of 5% alcohol either. Drinkable enough beer. Should be ok as not on last night when I walked in and out after not being served a beer that looked as though it was on. But obviously wasn't. End of rant. |

Nothing better to do than to come here for a beer after the rugby.
White Horse - Sarcen Stones | 4.60 | | Mahogany colour with a thin lasting head. It's alright. Really good malts. Served a bit cold. It's got a bit of spice on the end. Bit of toffee. Yeah, alright. I like this brewery and think they make some drinkable bitters with a good mix of malt and hop and a decent yeast character. |
