Virtually no point putting what else was on as I have no idea as there are pump clips up, but no beer. Until Tim Martin gets proper beer people into his pubs as managers, there will be places like this where you queue for 10 minutes for a beer just to be told that it isn't on. Farce. Imagine shopping at a supermarket, putting all of the things in your trolley and then going to the checkout to be told, "oh I'm sorry that's not available," not sure how long they would be in business for. I still get strange looks from the smokers for sitting outside in the cold just so I can get reception on my pocket DAB digital radio of the cricket from the Caribbean, but what the heck? Oh and just about the only pub in Ashford where I might get something interesting beerwise.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Palm - Palm5.20AcceptableOne of those Belgian beers, that JDW get in a cask. Hazy gold, lasting thin white head. Not much evidence of a Belgian yeast. Some ok fruit. Not much evidence of 5% alcohol either. Drinkable enough beer. Should be ok as not on last night when I walked in and out after not being served a beer that looked as though it was on. But obviously wasn't. End of rant.

Nothing better to do than to come here for a beer after the rugby.
BeerABVScoreNotes
White Horse - Sarcen Stones4.60GoodMahogany colour with a thin lasting head. It's alright. Really good malts. Served a bit cold. It's got a bit of spice on the end. Bit of toffee. Yeah, alright. I like this brewery and think they make some drinkable bitters with a good mix of malt and hop and a decent yeast character.
01 Feb 2009 (Ian)
I simply had nothing better to do.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brentwood - Hope & Glory4.50AcceptableSolid best bitter, some fruit, some yeast, some earthy hop on finish.
25 Jan 2009 (Ian)
Burn's Night. The haggis was improved by smearing it with HP sauce and plenty of ketchup on the neeps and tatties was needed. To avoid screaming children I sat at the back, which isn't a nice place to sit as it is freezing cold due to the back doors being in continuous use for the car park and smokers. Oh and the barman behind the bar had no idea who Robbie Burns was.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Caledonian - Ale Langs Syne4.60AcceptableDiacetyl buttery aroma, which I tried to convince myself was caramel. Good condition and at £1.29 a pint I couldn't really complain. I had a few so it couldn't have been that bad.
24 Jan 2009 (Ian)
Just popped in for a couple mid afternoon. Not very busy, but it is the end of January
BeerABVScoreNotes
Saltaire - Titus Black4.50GoodReally very good in fact, nice burnt roasted malt flavour and proper bitterness on the finish.
Greene King - IPA (was 3.6%)3.40Not TriedStill doing very good business at 99p a pint.
30 Nov 2008 (Ian)
Just popped in to see what was on. Did a bit of reading.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Bath Ales - Golden Hare4.40AcceptableI wanted to have this again, as the times I had it before, it was full of diacetyl. Still a little bit of butter, but good condition in mouth, good bitter hop. Drinkable golden bitter, just a bit too buttery still.
24 Nov 2008 (Ian)
Well they just can't seem to shift those festival beers. A month on and they are now selling them all off at £1.39 a pint. I wasn't going to have anything, but at that price, I really couldn't say no. I sat by the front window and listened to Another Case of Milton Jones on the radio.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Cotleigh - Honey Buzzard4.50GoodHoney and good dry malts, classic premium bitter with bit of sweetness from the honey. I've always liked Cotleigh beers and this is another good one.
Harviestoun - Thistle Do4.60GoodAlong with the Sheps Fuggles, my beer of the festival. Tasty dark winter beer.
21 Nov 2008 (Ian)
Just popped in to see if any of the festival beers were still on. The woman behind the bar said that they still had loads of festival beers in the cellar, so I will be back to see if I can knock off the 6 beers I haven't had before from the original list.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Wells Bombardier Burning Gold (now superseded by 4.1% version)4.70AcceptableGold, lasting beige head. Looks in great nick and the mouthfeel backs this up. Just a little dusty and dull in terms of flavours . Some stinging dryness on finish. Shame as in amazing condition. Lovely lacing. Just a bit dull and stale on the flavours.
18 Nov 2008 (Ian)
Again, I just wanted to see what was on. And at last, after waiting 20 days, the Mikkeller beer came on. Again not very busy even on steak night.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Mikkeller - Viking's Return4.50AcceptableI've had this 3 times now and it has been drinkable, excellent and now acceptable. Not the best in the mouth, a bit watery and just way too dry on the end. The hops I had before, just were not there. Odd to have 3 different qualities of the same beer. Malts initially are still very good.
Browar Namyslow - Namyslow Plum4.00Not Tried
Barons - BlackWattle Original Ale4.80Not Tried
Highgate - Red Rogue3.80Not Tried
11 Nov 2008 (Ian)
Hadn't been in for a bit so I came to see if any new festival beers were on.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - Fuggles Kentish Pale Ale4.40GoodSurprise of the festival for me. This is good. Hops are citrusy, sherberty, tasty. Part of it is the shock in that Sheps have produced a hoppy beer of their own volition.
Woodforde's - Norfolk Nog4.60AcceptableFruity dark beer. It's not quite right I think. Some damson/date/plum flavour. Odd sourness to it. Then I discovered that it is an old ale and therefore should taste like this with that bit of sourness.
