I simply had nothing better to do.
Brentwood - Hope & Glory | 4.50 | | Solid best bitter, some fruit, some yeast, some earthy hop on finish. |
25 Jan 2009 (Ian)
Burn's Night. The haggis was improved by smearing it with HP sauce and plenty of ketchup on the neeps and tatties was needed. To avoid screaming children I sat at the back, which isn't a nice place to sit as it is freezing cold due to the back doors being in continuous use for the car park and smokers. Oh and the barman behind the bar had no idea who Robbie Burns was.
Caledonian - Ale Langs Syne | 4.60 | | Diacetyl buttery aroma, which I tried to convince myself was caramel. Good condition and at £1.29 a pint I couldn't really complain. I had a few so it couldn't have been that bad. |
24 Jan 2009 (Ian)
Just popped in for a couple mid afternoon. Not very busy, but it is the end of January
Saltaire - Titus Black | 4.50 | | Really very good in fact, nice burnt roasted malt flavour and proper bitterness on the finish. |
Greene King - IPA (was 3.6%) | 3.40 | Not Tried | Still doing very good business at 99p a pint. |
30 Nov 2008 (Ian)
Just popped in to see what was on. Did a bit of reading.
Bath Ales - Golden Hare | 4.40 | | I wanted to have this again, as the times I had it before, it was full of diacetyl. Still a little bit of butter, but good condition in mouth, good bitter hop. Drinkable golden bitter, just a bit too buttery still. |

Well they just can't seem to shift those festival beers. A month on and they are now selling them all off at £1.39 a pint. I wasn't going to have anything, but at that price, I really couldn't say no. I sat by the front window and listened to Another Case of Milton Jones on the radio.
Cotleigh - Honey Buzzard | 4.50 | | Honey and good dry malts, classic premium bitter with bit of sweetness from the honey. I've always liked Cotleigh beers and this is another good one. |
Harviestoun - Thistle Do | 4.60 | | Along with the Sheps Fuggles, my beer of the festival. Tasty dark winter beer. |
21 Nov 2008 (Ian)
Just popped in to see if any of the festival beers were still on. The woman behind the bar said that they still had loads of festival beers in the cellar, so I will be back to see if I can knock off the 6 beers I haven't had before from the original list.
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Wells Bombardier Burning Gold (now superseded by 4.1% version) | 4.70 | | Gold, lasting beige head. Looks in great nick and the mouthfeel backs this up. Just a little dusty and dull in terms of flavours . Some stinging dryness on finish. Shame as in amazing condition. Lovely lacing. Just a bit dull and stale on the flavours. |

Again, I just wanted to see what was on. And at last, after waiting 20 days, the Mikkeller beer came on. Again not very busy even on steak night.
Mikkeller - Viking's Return | 4.50 | | I've had this 3 times now and it has been drinkable, excellent and now acceptable. Not the best in the mouth, a bit watery and just way too dry on the end. The hops I had before, just were not there. Odd to have 3 different qualities of the same beer. Malts initially are still very good. |
Browar Namyslow - Namyslow Plum | 4.00 | Not Tried
Barons - BlackWattle Original Ale | 4.80 | Not Tried
Highgate - Red Rogue | 3.80 | Not Tried
11 Nov 2008 (Ian)
Hadn't been in for a bit so I came to see if any new festival beers were on.
Shepherd Neame - Fuggles Kentish Pale Ale | 4.40 | | Surprise of the festival for me. This is good. Hops are citrusy, sherberty, tasty. Part of it is the shock in that Sheps have produced a hoppy beer of their own volition. |
Woodforde's - Norfolk Nog | 4.60 | | Fruity dark beer. It's not quite right I think. Some damson/date/plum flavour. Odd sourness to it. Then I discovered that it is an old ale and therefore should taste like this with that bit of sourness. |

There seems to be a definite policy this time round to release the beers in a certain way, for instance virtually all of the 'Spoons pubs I've been in have had the same 20 odd beers with some being held back for the 2nd or 3rd weeks of the festival. Which is ok, but once you've had all of the ones out in the first couple of days, with only 1 or 2 being something I would want to drink again, it does become a bit disappointing. I've come here most days and just walked in and walked straight back out again.
Titanic - Iron Curtain | 6.00 | | One of the beers of the festival for me so far. Rich good choc, a sourish bite somewhere, not too overly dominant with the liquorice, good and full in the mouth, with a toasted almost burnt choc on the finish. Alcohol doesn't dominate. Good. |
Wadworth - Camrale | 4.00 | Not Tried
Lincolnshire Craft (formerly Tom Wood's) - Jolly Ploughman | 5.00 | Not Tried
Meantime - Coffee Porter | 5.00 | Not Tried
02 Nov 2008 (Ian)
Popped in over the lunchtime period for a quiet pint whilst reading the penultimate Rebus book, "The Naming of the Dead." Fortunately there was a lack of screaming children.
St Austell - Proper Job | 4.50 | | One of my favourite hoppy golden beers in the UK. St Austell also do a Cornish IPA bottle conditioned beer for Marks & Spencer which is equally good. Lots of citrus hops over a reasonably full, creamy body. |
Titanic - Iron Curtain | 6.00 | | The best of the dark beers so far on the festival. The choc and velvety roasted character make this a really good sipping pint. |
Brouwerij Het Anker - Gouden Carolus Ambrio | 8.00 | Not Tried
