There seems to be a definite policy this time round to release the beers in a certain way, for instance virtually all of the 'Spoons pubs I've been in have had the same 20 odd beers with some being held back for the 2nd or 3rd weeks of the festival. Which is ok, but once you've had all of the ones out in the first couple of days, with only 1 or 2 being something I would want to drink again, it does become a bit disappointing. I've come here most days and just walked in and walked straight back out again.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Titanic - Iron Curtain6.00ExcellentOne of the beers of the festival for me so far. Rich good choc, a sourish bite somewhere, not too overly dominant with the liquorice, good and full in the mouth, with a toasted almost burnt choc on the finish. Alcohol doesn't dominate. Good.

Popped in over the lunchtime period for a quiet pint whilst reading the penultimate Rebus book, "The Naming of the Dead." Fortunately there was a lack of screaming children.
BeerABVScoreNotes
St Austell - Proper Job4.50ExcellentOne of my favourite hoppy golden beers in the UK. St Austell also do a Cornish IPA bottle conditioned beer for Marks & Spencer which is equally good. Lots of citrus hops over a reasonably full, creamy body.
Titanic - Iron Curtain6.00ExcellentThe best of the dark beers so far on the festival. The choc and velvety roasted character make this a really good sipping pint.
Brouwerij Het Anker - Gouden Carolus Ambrio8.00Not Tried
01 Nov 2008 (Ian)
Saturday lunchtime and I came to do the Independent super Su Doku.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Brouwerij Het Anker - Gouden Carolus Ambrio8.00GoodThere aren't that many Belgian cask conditioned beers out there, but this one does show that they can do it. Belgian, estery, frutiy yeast aroma with decent tangerine and peach fruit in the mouth. Good fullness in the mouth. Nothing out of place.
11 Oct 2008 (Ian)
It comes to something when I have to come to a 'Spoons for a good pint! Stop number 4 on the Saturday crawl. I sat in a booth at the back and enjoyed my beers.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Ossett - Pale Gold3.80ExcellentBeautifully grassy hoppy beer with the right level of acidity.
Orkney (Sinclair) - Dark Island4.60AcceptableCoffee and liquorice. Too much liquorice on the after taste for me.
Salopian - Oracle4.00Not Tried
18 Sep 2008 (Ian)
I met up with Phil Lowry to talk about Copenhagen Beer Festival and beer.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Hook Norton - Hooky Gold4.10GoodPhil didn't like it much, but to be honest after 6 days of Dutch and American beers, it was nice to have a British beer. If I had to drink this all night, I wouldn't have complained.
23 Jul 2008 (Ian)
It was Wednesday quiz night. I just popped in for one after work. Reasonably busy.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Marston's - Old Empire IPA5.70ExcellentStill just about my favourite Marston's beer. The hop really is quite amazing and I keep forgetting just how good the aroma and hop finish are. Beautiful pint. I could smell this all night.
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Hazy Daze4.30GoodCloudy gold colour. I'm always a bit suspicious of English wheat beers. Bit of banana on the aroma. Actually for an English wheat this is not bad. Good condition. It does fade a little bit. Not really a weizen. Tad of bubble gum. Cereal aroma, some lemon and banana but with an English yeast. Aye, not bad.
06 Jul 2008 (Ian)
I didn't really need another drink, but I hadn't been here for ages, so I popped in to see what was on. Really not very busy at all which is strange as the sunday roast is normally very popular.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Woodforde's - Sundew4.10AcceptableI quite like the hop on this, reminiscent of Wherry, but the malts actually go with it quite well too. Refreshing.
10 Jun 2008 (Ian)
Sat at the back and had a pint whilst watching Spain demolish Russia in Euro 2008.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Holden's - Lucy B (aka XB)4.20AcceptableStraw colour, lasting head. Good condition, bit of biscuit, bit of cardboard on aroma. Some rose petal fruit. Some hop on finish. Oddly drinkable bitter. Citrus hop bite is just enough to make you want to drink it. I am surprised at how good it is. OK

I hadn't had a drink since Saturday, so thought I would pop in to see what was on. Pedigree and Spitfire are now on the bottom bar and the last 4 handpumps on the top bar tend to have the guests on. Tonight there were 4 and I was pleasantly surprised.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Grainstore - Rutland Panther3.40GoodIn great condition. Choc and a bit of tobacco. Bit of vanilla. Tasty. Even a bit bitter on the finish from the burnt malt. Just a very tasty beer. Bit of an odd effervescence on the finish stops it scoring higher. Andrew would like this. Good choccy flavours.
Marston's - Old Empire IPA5.70GoodReally very hoppy for an English beer. Slight burton snatch on the aroma. Then the alcohol kicks in. Not obvious syrupy, but definitely has an effect on the brain.
Brewster's - Rutterkin (superseded by 5% version)4.60AcceptableI have had far better pints of this, seemed a bit tired. Decent hops, sherberty, but lacked a bit of condition.

Popped in to see what was on. After having some very disappointing Palm and Anker beers, I was very pleased to have the Outlaw.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Rooster's - Wild Mule3.90ExcellentLovely nettley hoppy beer, with good fullness in mouth, great condition. Another fantastic hoppy drinkable beer from the Roosters Outlaw plant.
