Stopped off on the way back from Sunday lunch at my mother's to see which festival beers were on.
Nethergate (was Nethergate Growler for a while then name reverted) - April Fool | 4.10 | | Proper bitter, proper bitterness. Juicy malt, good bitter hop, good fruit. |
05 Apr 2008 (Ian)
I had no plans for the day, so I thought I would pop in for a pint or two. Weather was lousy too.
Yo-Ho Brewing Company - Tokyo Black Ale | 5.00 | | Fresh on. Great toasty roasty stout, less liquoricy than when I had it before. |
Cains - Bock | 4.50 | | Only just came on. Thick head, but no sparkler. Great condition, bit of puke, but very good red fruit too, I mean it has the elements of a bock, but at 4.5%? Great condition. Settles down in to a fruity beer. Malts are good, so is the fruit and a stinging finish in middle of tongue. Oddly drinkable. |
Freeminer - Shake Mantal Ginger Ale | 5.00 | | Cloudy orange gold colour with thin beige head. Soft ginger aroma, but in mouth, it’s a lot spicier, not really root ginger, very spicy ginger, not really very attractive. Shame as I like Freeminer beers. Bit of plastic on finish. It’s fine, but the thought of a 2nd pint would drive me from the pub, good thing the Tokyo Black was on too. As I say, fine, just not for me. |

Well, I had been checking this pub out to see if they had the Stone California DIPA on. And when I walked in last night after work, I aspied the pump clip at the end of the bar. Fairly busy, but to be honest I never really noticed anything after the 3rd pint.
Shepherd Neame - Stone Brewing California Double IPA | 7.00 | | So hoppy it makes me want to cry. The funny thing is the alcohol just isn't present in the drink until you try to stand up. Having learnt my lesson from last week, I took the first couple of pints easy, even though it is so drinkable. I then went home and finished the last of my rabbit stew that I made on Sunday and came back with my book and sat by one of the front windows and consumed some more pints of probably the best beer I will have this year in this pub. |
Orkney (Sinclair) - Dark Island | 4.60 | Not Tried
Robinsons - Top Tipple | 3.90 | Not Tried
31 Mar 2008 (Ian)
I promised myself that I would stop going to 'Spoons during the festival as I go too often. But the lure of finding something new was too much.
Rooster's - Outlaw Boneshaker IPA | 5.00 | | Really looking forward to this one due to the hop varieties used and Roosters history. Paleish gold with lasting off white head. Kiwi fruit. Lemony aroma. Some grapefruit. It’s fine. A little less full on than the Stone DIPA which has just about ruined every hoppy beer in Britain for me. It’s balanced, a bit nettley, great condition. Good biscuit and rather tasty. |
Wye Valley - Mad Hatter | 4.20 | | Copper with thin off white head. Some yeasty aroma and character. Yeasty best bitter, bit of empty candy sugar in mouth, decent hop sting on finish. Absolutely fine, but no real distinctive character. OK hops on finish. |
26 Mar 2008 (Ian)
As I had picked up a couple of festival beers at the Folkestone 'Spoons, I thought I would try my luck here too.
Thwaites - Wainwright (please now use the Banks's entry) | 4.10 | | Copper, slight haze, decent lasting beige head. Bit of spicy fruity aroma, bit of spicy dry malt in mouth. Quite soft in mouth. Not huge hop on finish, but quite drinkable. Easy drinking slightly spicy bitter. |
Okell's - Dr Okell's Eastern Spice | 4.50 | | Gold with thin ivory head. Quite an inviting aroma of mixed spice and the base beer is fine, but oh dear, the spice is rather unsubtle and unintegrated. Ginger and chillis really come through. Aroma is rather good. OK golden bitter, bit too much chilli on finish for me, but still, makes a change to standard bitters/golden ales. |
23 Mar 2008 (Ian)
It was Sunday and I was pretty sure that some of the festival beers would start coming on early and I was right.
Hydes - Trojan Horse | 4.20 | | Copper colour with lasting beige head. Looks in good condition. It’s an ok bitter, just doesn’t do anything special. Aroma of stone/mineral and hop and subtle fruit salad, which is fine. Solid enough in mouth. Fruit salad and moderate hop on finish. Not as yeasty as some Hydes beers. Decent fruit salady bitter |
16 Mar 2008 (Ian)
Sunday mid afternoon, came with my book and did some reading in one of the booths.
Shepherd Neame - Bishops Finger | 5.00 | | Must have been good, I had 2 pints of it. Good condition. As always, all the pump clips turned to face the customer even when some weren't on. |
Badger (Hall & Woodhouse) - Tanglefoot (was 4.9%) | 4.70 | | It was ok, but not in the best condition, so I decided to try something else. When on form though, I do like this beer. |
28 Feb 2008 (Ian)
I had the day off next day, so thought I would do a very small crawl of Ashford. This was number one.
Lincolnshire Craft (formerly Tom Wood's) - Old Timber | 4.50 | | Solid best bitter. Excellent condition, worth a 2nd pint. |
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Courage Directors (use Banks's entry now please) | 4.80 | Not Tried
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Marston's - Pedigree | 4.50 | Not Tried
13 Feb 2008 (Ian)
No good reason for being here apart from being cheap Wednesday. Oh but, they had 4, that's right 4 guest beers.
Cotleigh - Barn Owl Bitter | 4.50 | | Chestnut with lasting beige head. Lovely bitter, good fruit and real hoppy bitterness on end. Decent drinkable bitter. |
Arran (formerly Isle of Arran) - Fireside | 4.70 | | Deep chestnut. Ginger from the start. No great condition either. I tend to like ginger beers, but this one is awful. Almost undrinkable. Ginger lemon shandy. Taste of stale dust. Pretty poor. |
Herold - Black Chalice | 4.80 | | Full of diacetyl. |
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | Not Tried
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Courage Directors (use Banks's entry now please) | 4.80 | Not Tried
Belhaven - Caledonian Deuchars IPA | 3.80 | Not Tried
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Marston's - Pedigree | 4.50 | Not Tried
25 Jan 2008 (Ian)
It was Burn's night and you could get haggis and a drink for £3.99 and also a double Glenfiddich for £2.25. Quite busy with Friday evening people. I had a couple of pints, a whisky and then went home to bed as I had managed to have haggis 3 times in just one day.
Caledonian - 80/- | 4.10 | | Enormously drinkable with a caramel malty edge. Good condition too, which meant the pint just slipped down the throat. |
