I sat at a table next to a guy from Vancouver, Canada who was over visiting his mother in Ashford and we talked about Vancouver and beer. Nice evening.
Nethergate (was Nethergate Growler for a while then name reverted) - Old Growler | 5.00 | | I normally pass this up for some reason, why? (Actually I looked at when I had it before and it was a bit on the sour side then). Liquorice, charcoal porter in great condition. I even persuaded our Canandian friend to have a pint of it too. |
Lincolnshire Craft (formerly Tom Wood's) - Old Timber | 4.50 | | Pale chestnut with lasting beige bubbly head. Aroma of summer fruits. Flavour is malt and fruit. Decent condition, piercing hop finish which is earthy. Bit of rubber. |
16 Jan 2008 (Ian)
I had had a pretty successful day at work, so thought I would pop in for one to celebrate. Unsurprisingly not that busy due to coming towards end of January and people don't have a lot of spare cash.
Marston's - Old Empire IPA | 5.70 | | Just about the best pint of this beer I've had. The hop was incredibly fresh on this. |
Okell's - Aile | 4.80 | | In pretty good condition, but from what the barman said, I think it was coming towards the end of the barrel. Smoke, dry tar, choccy porter. It's pretty good, but not perfect. |
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | Not Tried
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Courage Best Bitter (use Marston's entry now please) | 4.00 | Not Tried
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Marston's - Pedigree | 4.50 | Not Tried
Shepherd Neame - Bishops Finger | 5.00 | Not Tried
09 Jan 2008 (Ian)
Had a bit of a tough day at work, so thought I deserved a drink. In fact had 2. Not very busy, not surprising really, it being January.
Burton Bridge - Sovereign Gold | 4.00 | | Gold, with slight haze, thin lasting off white head. Aroma of sherberty grapefruit hop. Citrusy flavours in the mouth, reminds me a bit of Oakham JHB. Right up my alley. I wonder if it has Mount Hood hops in? A little watery in mouth, but the hops are excellent. Good beer. |
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | Not Tried
Eagle (formerly Wells & Young's, formerly Charles Wells, formerly Wells) - Courage Directors (use Banks's entry now please) | 4.80 | Not Tried
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | Not Tried
Greene King - Abbot | 5.00 | Not Tried
Batemans - XXXB (now superseded by 4.8% version) | 4.50 | Not Tried
Marston's - Pedigree | 4.50 | Not Tried
07 Jan 2008 (Ian)
First visit of the new year. Still a 'Spoons.
Batemans - XXXB (now superseded by 4.8% version) | 4.50 | | A decent standby beer. Good malts, excellent condition, good mouthfeel. |
22 Dec 2007 (Ian)
Ummm, I did my last Christmas shopping and got here around 2.30pm. And it was pretty full and I was lucky to get a seat. Nice enough atmosphere as I read the Beer Camra newspaper.
Hook Norton - Twelve Days | 5.50 | | Looks in cracking condition. Very deep ruby colour with lasting beige head. Flavour of rich malt liquorice. It really is rather good. Aroma has some sour dark fruits. Good in mouth. Slightly sweet to balance the sour fruit. Nice hop kick on the finish. Warming English winter beer. Good stuff |
20 Dec 2007 (Ian)
Having come back from Canterbury, I didn't fancy going straight to bed. So one of the benefits of extended opening hours is that I could wander into here at 23.10 and still get a pint.
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | | Not a full pint and not what I wanted either, but although the Marstons Old Empire pump clip was displayed, it wasn't on. Fine beer with enough richness and hoppiness to keep you interested. |
15 Dec 2007 (Ian)
Traditionally I always pick a nice pub to write my Xmas cards in as a kind of present to myself for writing 30 odd cards. This year I made an exception. Sat at the rear of the pub which was heaving with Xmas shoppers and also a large group of 18 year olds meeting up.
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | | There was nothing else to have, but you know what it had the distinctive Sheps yeast and a reasonable showing of hops. |
Highgate - Throbbin Robin | 4.30 | | Yeasty standard bitter. |
09 Dec 2007 (Ian)
Instead of wasting my time watching football (Middlesborough beat Arsenal 2-1) I took my Ian Rankin book to the County and sat and intentionally didn't look at the time. I only had £12 in my pocket, but they had Greene King Abbot Reserve on so I was more than happy. Sat in one of the booths at the rear.
Greene King - Abbot Reserve | 6.50 | | A little sticky and syrupy, but otherwise perfectly drinkable even at 6.5% |
03 Dec 2007 (Ian)
Just popped in to see what was on. Not very busy.
Hanlons (formerly O'Hanlon's) - Goodwill | 4.80 | | Wow, that is a tasty beer. Beautiful amber colour with lasting thick beige head. without a sparkler. What great condition this beer is in. Deep fruit and dry malt aroma. Some cream and pepper hop. Great condition. Lovely sweetish malt in mouth, some candy sugar. Then cream strawberry and raspberry on finish with vanilla and a hop sting. Excellent. |
25 Nov 2007 (Ian)
I had a hard morning Christmas shopping in Ashford so I thought I deserved a beer. Some people in having Sunday roast at 12.00
Otter - Ale | 4.50 | | OK, not bad condition, some sweetish malt, some hop, but ultimately pretty forgettable. |
Ventnor - Golden Bitter | 4.00 | Not Tried
