It was kind of late lunchtime on a Saturday and it was pretty busy with shoppers taking a break. I sat with the jumbo Independent su doku and had 4 pints.
Nethergate (was Nethergate Growler for a while then name reverted) - Umbel Magna | 5.00 | | In brilliant condition, this slipped down perfectly. Good balance of dark malts, great mouthfeel and that hint of spice on the end from the coriander. |
15 Nov 2007 (Ian)
Not very full, but the smell of curry was nice.
Grainstore - Ten Fifty (1050) | 5.00 | | Good strong bitter with a biting pepper hop finish. Good condition too. |

First night of the autumn beer festival so I had to go. Quite a few people having the curry night special.
Hydes - Atomic | 4.90 | | Very deep ruby colour with thick beige head. Some dry malt, some fruit aroma. OK in mouth with some fullness. Some yeast on aroma. Nice medium/dark fruits on end. Better finish than start. |
Hanlons (formerly O'Hanlon's) - Dry Stout | 4.20 | | Slightly fruity stout. Some choc on aroma, not enormously dry in mouth. Good fruits and then some bitterness on end. Finish is very good. |
Brouwerij Het Anker - Gouden Carolus Blond | 6.00 | | Belgian yeast and peach aroma. Bit watery in mouth. Decent blond ale, bit too sweet but nice to have something different. |

Came here after work just to see what was on. Fairly quiet and I got my usual seat by the window in the quiet bit. I will say this for the service, it does seem to have improved and the bar people will take off the sparkler if you ask them to.
Harviestoun - The Real McCoy | 4.50 | | Cask handpull at County Hotel, JDW, Ashford. Clear copper with thick head. Raspberry and hop aroma. Smooth is a little watery in mouth. And served too cold. Then a good aggressive herby hop on the finish. This is how I remember Harviestoun beers being like. Good easy drinking hoppy beers. Particularly the hoppy finish. Just needs a bit more body to be very good. And then I asked for the sparkler to be taken off for the second pint. My god, what a difference. Suddenly more herby hop on aroma. Still a little watery in mouth but the stinging finishing hop is a lot more characterful with better hop flavours and some sweaty sox.

Yes, there were some people in. It's an alright pub still. Clearly the best in Ashford and the best place to get an interesting beer, but that is not saying a lot for the town.
Budelse - Budel Alt | 4.80 | | Highly drinkable. Really different and got a good swallow on it. Could sink several of these. |

I popped in for breakfast early on Sunday morning with absolutely no intention of coming back later for a drink. However, as I walked past the handpumps, there was Oakham JHB. So after having had Sunday lunch with my family, I came in around 3.30 and had a few. Pub was fairly busy with late/early Sunday eaters.
Oakham - JHB | 3.80 | | The best I've had it for many months, in fact I think since they moved the brewery. Lovely grapefruit and tangerine juice with a drying hoppy finish and great mouthfeel too. I would drink this even if it didn't have alcohol in. |
Hook Norton - Old Hooky | 4.60 | Not Tried
Marston's - Old Empire IPA | 5.70 | Not Tried
16 Aug 2007 (Ian)
I finished work in Ashford early, so popped in for one or two.
Badger (Hall & Woodhouse) - Tanglefoot (was 4.9%) | 4.70 | | I like this beer. Good tart fruit. |
Batemans - Summer Swallow | 3.90 | | Gold/copper colour with lasting thin beige head. Some toffee on aroma. Some herby hop. Decent condition. Quite zingy on the finish. The finish is pretty good. It is ok. Hop is good but aroma is not great. |

It was hot. I was thirsty. So I thought that I would go to the pub. Wednesday is quiz night, so a little busier than normal, plus the real ale is down to £1.69 a pint.
Harviestoun - Schiehallion | 4.80 | | This disappeared in minutes. Good hop and it is just a very refreshing drinkable quaffing beer. |
RCH - Double Header | 5.30 | | I seem to remember having this in a Spoons in St Albans and rather liking it. This was thinner on flavour and the malts were not so pronounced. Still pretty good. |

Yet another Network Rail leaving do. Hadn't been in here for a few weeks it looks like getting back to the old problems beer running out pump clips turned round no capable staff to change a barrel
Shepherd Neame - Spitfire (or Spitfire Amber Ale) | 4.20 | | With the lack of anything else to drink started to drink this guess what it ran out |
Marston's - Pedigree | 4.50 | | Unusual for me I'm on me third different beer had one of these it was in good nick didn't bother going up for a second as I guess it would have run out by the time I got served |
Holden's - Golden Glow | 4.40 | | Getting near the end of the barrel had ran out by next time I went up to the jump. Light Blondish beer I wish it was in better condition because I reckon it would be a nice quaffing pint ideal for a session |
25 Jul 2007 (Ian)
After a fairly difficult day at work, I thought that I had earned a pint. What delight I had when I saw that Oakham White Dwarf was on.
Oakham - White Dwarf | 4.30 | | Brilliant. Good condition, good flavours. Lovely. Citrus, hoppy, grapefruity, creamy, full and utterly drinkable. Did I mention the hops? |
