I had to get some change from a £10 note, and no where else was open on a Sunday late afternoon, so I had to come here didn't I? Fairly busy with families and children enjoying Sunday roast (until they ran out)
Marston's - Pure Blonde | 4.20 | | Jumping on the US hop blonde beer bandwagon. Gold colour, thick cream head. Slight burton snatch aroma. Citrus hops too. Pretty good condition in the mouth. Then US hop finish, so not surprised it says it has Cascades. It’s fine and perfect for summer. Took ages to pour with a big head on the first 3 attempts. |

It was Friday, do I need another reason to be in the pub?
Three Rivers - Manchester IPA | 4.20 | | Copper colour with lasting beige head. Creamy head. Citrus, hoppy aroma, little bit more intense than most English beers. Standard bitter in mouth, some malts, then an intense tight acidic grapefruit finish. Acids are puckering and drying. The brewer really has thrown a whole load of hops at this. Startling. Needs more balance with malt structure. Hops are intense but too tight and a tad metallic. Good enough for a second pint though. |

Cheap beer Wednesday. Not overly busy for the quiz night, but ok.
Badger (Hall & Woodhouse) - Tanglefoot (was 4.9%) | 4.70 | | Lacked a bit of condition on the second pint. Distinctive Badger yeast aroma and some pleasant sharp tangerine citrus fruit flavours. |

If it's Wednesday must be County hotel after work day
Marston's - Old Empire IPA | 5.70 | | Full Flavoured ale taste the hops and malt very fruity at 5.7 it was one pint I didn't knock straight back I just sipped and savoured excellent beer |
12 Jun 2007 (Ian)
I hadn't been in for 4 days, so I went in to see if they had any interesting guests.
Shepherd Neame - Bishops Finger | 5.00 | | I liked this. Good Sheps yeast aroma, full and fruity malt in mouth, smooth, drinkable, no harsh/off flavours. Very good. |
Arkell's - Kingsdown Special Ale | 5.00 | Not Tried | |
06 Jun 2007 (Ian)
It was fairly late on the Wednesday after the Estonia vs England game and one of the rooms was out of bounds due to a leaky roof.
York (now brewed by and at Black Sheep) - Yorkshire Terrier | 4.20 | | No sparkler!!!! How bizarre and refreshing. This had a slight yeast/hop aroma, perfect balance in mouth, slight malt sweetness with growing hoppiness, yet still the yeast from the aroma continuing. Utterly drinkable. Good condition, good lacing. Finish lasted some time. Although not overly aggressively hoppy. This is what the UK is good at and should try to replicate. Subtlety and balance.

Usual Wednesday After work swift one or two didn't realise that that Wednesday is cheap Real ale Day in all Spoons
York (now brewed by and at Black Sheep) - Yorkshire Terrier | 4.20 | | Light golden beer with a very bitter after taste which clawed at the tongue very drinkable.
This was a Yorkshire Beers served without a Tight Sparkler (What happened to Company Policy?) what with selling Kent beers with tight sparkler perhaps their map of the UK is upside down |
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | Not Tried | Was tempted but didn't have the time |
04 Jun 2007 (Ian)
I asked for a pint of Bishops Farewell and asked for the sparkler to be taken off first. The serving person was adament that it was company policy to serve all beers through a sparkler and refused to take it off. I shall be writing to Wetherspoons head office for an official policy on the use of sparklers.
Oakham - Bishops Farewell | 4.60 | | Despite the problems of getting this served, it was brilliant, fresh hop flavours. |
27 May 2007 (Ian)
Bank Holiday Sunday, so I had to go to the pub didn't I? Not very full actually, I think a lot of people have gone away for half term.
Hopdaemon - Incubus | 4.00 | | Really very drinkable. I think this may have been toned down to an extent as well as the Skrimshander. Having said that, I could still taste the hops on the walk home. |
Nelson - Rochester Bitter | 3.70 | | Too much diacetyl, like drinking liquid butter. |
23 May 2007 (Steve)
Popped in for a swift one after work
Nelson - Friggin in the Riggin | 4.70 | | Getting near the bottom of the barrel slightly cloudy and a bit sharp |
Thwaites - Lancaster Bomber (please now use the Banks's entry) | 4.40 | Not Tried | Saw the pump clip thought give it a go but it wasn't on yet |
