Our pub crawl numbers are swelled a little here in what would otherwise have been a quiet pub. The only London Fields Brewery beer we see all evening is here, although some are a bit squeamish about ordering a ‘keg’ beer.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Former brewery at Cock Tavern) - Pale Ale (Batch No. 1)3.80ExcellentVery sharp, grapefuity, pale, hoppy pint. The hop mix is Nugget, Pacific Gem, galena and Columbus, as the brewers continue to experiment with the recipe.
London Fields - Galaxy IPA8.00ExcellentA different beer from two earlier and lower-strength ‘galaxy’ beers from this brewery. On ‘key keg’ dispense, so un-carbonated. Looks to be unfiltered as well. Pale, strong and intensely hopped.

A steady early evening trade in here. Unfortunately the pub had run out of its own brew as it struggles to keep up with demand.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Kipling5.20ExcellentFragrantly hoppy strong bitter.
Williams Brothers - Harvest Sun3.90ExcellentGolden beer with nicely balanced malt and hops. Citrusy and bitter.
Marble - Little Evelyn7.00ExcellentGolden coloured, with a wonderfully smooth, dry-ish, fruity US hop taste. Strong. A collaboration brew with Hawkshead Brewery.

This pub has settled down in its new guise and brewing is now fully underway. For now, all beers are labelled ‘Brew No. 1’ or ‘Batch No. 1’ to reflect the fact that recipes have not fully settled down.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Howling Hops (Former brewery at Cock Tavern) - Pale Ale (Batch No. 1)3.80ExcellentGolden. Very heavily hopped. Mixture of, mostly bitter, hop tastes.
Brodie's (latterly contract brewed by Rhymney) - London Fields Pale Ale4.00GoodUsually a fabulous pint, but tastes a bit dulled here from a pint not in perfect condition.
Howling Hops (Former brewery at Cock Tavern) - IPA (Brew No. 1)5.70GoodHeavily hopped in US style, to give a tasty, fruity, hoppy, pale pint.
Howling Hops (Former brewery at Cock Tavern) - Gold (Batch No. 1)5.00GoodPale gold in colour, and a bit hazy. Slight suspended yeast taste. Smooth, fruity hop taste.

Another week and another Hackney brewery opens. Well not quite – this pub re-opened last night, just hours after being granted a licence, and strictly-speaking the beers brewed in the cellar will not be available for a few more days.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Marble - Summer Marble4.50ExcellentExcellent, pale hoppiness.
Magic Rock - High Wire5.50ExcellentEver-popular, fruity, extreme US hop beer.
Thornbridge / Thornbridge Hall - Roundabout3.90ExcellentBrewed in partnership with the Roundabout youth charity. A pale beer, with US fruity hop flavours of apricot and mango.
Binghams - Hot Dog Chilli Stout5.00GoodA black, roasted stout with a spicy edge.
Howling Hops (Former brewery at Cock Tavern) - IPA (Brew No. 1)5.70GoodThis should be the first Howling Hops beer to go on sale. Preview tasters available tonight which were a bit cloudy and a bit sweet from the fermentation tank. Heavy hopping with Green Bullet, Hallertau and Challenger give a nice ‘tropical fruit' flavour.
Pitfield's - Hewitt's Red Menis3.80AcceptableLow hop, sweetish, red ale.

The pub is found in Hackney, Greater London, E8 1EJ.

There was a pub called the Cock in Hackney village as early as the 1650s, and in 1661 it was the venue for ‘Popish Conspirators’, plotting an unsuccessful assassination attempt on King Charles II. Nobody is quite sure if this was the predecessor of today’s pub – but the present pub was certainly around by the 1830s and was rebuilt in its present form by Truman’s Brewery in around 1930. Very much a down-market, high street, strictly ‘no real ale’ sort of place, it closed in early 2012 for refurbishment, and re-opened on 18 July 2012 as a real ale champion, complete with in-house ‘Howling Hops’ micro-brewery (subsequently relocated to larger premises). This pub is sister pub to the Southampton Arms in Kentish Town.

We have visited this pub 124 times, seen 426 different beers and tried 269 of them.
