In for one. Turned into three. Was found out by a friend on the mobile who came to join me. So great without smoke. A few of those who work here were in for a drink on their night off - if they hated the place they wouldn't come near it!! Mr N had spent the morning learning Tryst secrets first hand from the brewmeister who by all accounts sounds like a real innovator - look out for some great New Zealand real ales.
Harviestoun - Belgian White | 4.30 | | Still very good but a little bit harsher than before - it has been on for a few days. |
Houston - Peter's Well | 4.20 | | Maltier than I remember it but still very good. Mr N liked it. |
Inveralmond - Lia Fail | 4.70 | | Very malty - quite a pure taste and probably an excellent pint for those who don't like hops - personally I prefer malt to be balanced with hops. |
Harviestoun - Bitter & Twisted | 3.80 | Not Tried
Eglesbrech - A Wing and a Prayer | 4.50 | Not Tried
27 Mar 2006 (Charles)
First smoke free visit. Fairly quiet although I don't usually come in on a Monday so I'm not sure what it is usually like. A few regulars at the bar. Wondered what it would smell like without smoke - just fresh and clean - lack of soft furnishings must help.
Harviestoun - Belgian White | 4.30 | | Never tried this before. Very crisp, clean and refreshing, like 7up with lots of dry hops. |
Harviestoun - Bitter & Twisted | 3.80 | Not Tried
Inveralmond - Thrappledouser | 4.30 | Not Tried
Eglesbrech - Grannies Oatmeal Stout | 4.50 | Not Tried
Houston - Peter's Well | 4.20 | Not Tried
24 Mar 2006 (Charles)
Usual Friday scene.
Mauldons - Dickens | 4.00 | | Decided this was pouring best. Hoppy with a bit of sweetness. |
Black Sheep - Special Ale (previously Ale) | 4.40 | | Tastes different to before - I'm getting a bitterness in it. OK but one pint enough. |
Harviestoun - Bitter & Twisted | 3.80 | | Something wrong with my taste buds today I think. More bitter than usual. |
Eglesbrech - Grannies Oatmeal Stout | 4.50 | | Have to admit this is actually ok. Quite tasty in fact. |
Inveralmond - XXX | 4.40 | | This one is very malty with no hops coming through so not to my taste. |
Stewart - Edinburgh Gold | 4.80 | Not Tried | This one went off so didn't get a chance to try it. |
21 Mar 2006 (Charles)
Came in after playing footie. Didn't sample any real ale though - must be something wrong with me. Only three beers on tonight. Some kind of make up demonstration going on in the sports bar and we were invited not to sit there.
Orkney (Sinclair) - Northern Light | 4.00 | Not Tried
Orkney (Sinclair) - Red MacGregor | 4.00 | Not Tried
Stewart - Edinburgh Gold | 4.80 | Not Tried
19 Mar 2006 (Charles)
Went up very late for a quick pint to meet a couple of friends who were extremely grumpy/ angry about the impending smoking ban - I think they had already had several pints. Ended up wishing I had stayed at home. At least the staff were friendly. Still very bury (at 10.30pm) following afternoon cup football. Quite few people worse for wear and speaking in very loud voices and the music was a bit too loud - expecially since it was some kind of terrible house compilation including Lilly the Pink and Agadoo. Couldn't have asked for better service on the beer front though.
Orkney (Sinclair) - Red MacGregor | 4.00 | | A clear "excellent" for this one. Don't think I've ever had a bad pint of this. Balanced but bursting with flavour. Acres of malty red velvet with a rousing massed hop chorus. Very generous with the ingredients me thinks. |
Stewart - Pentland IPA | 4.10 | | Probably unfair trying this after a Red McGregor as my mouth was still singing/ zinging - most things would seem a bit insipid following such a tasty pint. Got more taste as the pint went down and my mouth calmed down. Gentle balanced flavour - a little butter and smoke I think. |
Eglesbrech - Grannies Oatmeal Stout | 4.50 | Not Tried | Had a small sip of someone elses and actually this didn't taste too bad - maybe it is a fresh batch. |
Stewart - Edinburgh Gold | 4.80 | Not Tried

Oh my beloved BTW. There was a Guiness promo on tonight - shoved down our throats a bit - although thank you for the hat. Good showing tonight - started with someone I didn't recognise asking if I was Charlie and introducing themselves to me - was about to go home when Messr Lebork called and the evening started all over again.
Tryst - Carronade IPA | 4.20 | | Martin said it was the first time in awhile he's had a pint he enjoyed as much as his own - he makes his own stuff with proper hops and grains and agrees with me that JM is very generous with the ingredients Martin wants to know how to transfer the small production techniques into large scale brewing - watch this space for New Zealands first real ale brewery. |
Mauldons - Cuckoo Bitter | 4.30 | Not Tried
Stewart - Edinburgh No. 3 | 4.30 | Not Tried
16 Mar 2006 (Charles)
Train cancelled - had to wait 40 mins. Very cold and pub perilously close - couldn't help myself. Same beers as yesterday. Fires on, newspapers, Carronade, heaven.
Tryst - Carronade IPA | 4.20 | | Still very good |
Mauldons - Cuckoo Bitter | 4.30 | Not Tried
Eglesbrech - Grannies Oatmeal Stout | 4.50 | Not Tried | And never will, would rather drink Castrol GTX |
Stewart - Edinburgh No. 3 | 4.30 | Not Tried
Tring - Peelers Pale Ale | 4.20 | Not Tried
15 Mar 2006 (Charles)
Went to meet a freind for a couple of pints upstairs and ended up staying for four which gave me a chance to try all of the guest ales. Failry quiet on arrival (7pm) but got a bit busier as the evening went on. No quiz tonight.
Stewart - Edinburgh No. 3 | 4.30 | | Quite a malty one so not quite so much to my taste but still good and easy drinking |
Tryst - Carronade IPA | 4.20 | | Only a good today as this isn't quite as good as before. It seems this is the third barrel in a row in space of a week or so. Unusual for BTW I think and may explain variability. No doubt best when it first goes on but loses something after a day or two. |
Tring - Peelers Pale Ale | 4.20 | | Dry but balanced ale |
Mauldons - Cuckoo Bitter | 4.30 | | Not to my taste - hard to put finger on but I think I'm getting something bitter/ liquorice/ acetone - not sure what - I don't think I'll be in a hurry to try this again. Quite a definite taste but an acquired one I think. |
Eglesbrech - Grannies Oatmeal Stout | 4.50 | Not Tried
14 Mar 2006 (Charles)
In for a pint after playing footie. Only three beers on today. Decided to have a burger. Two ladies from M&S who had been at a seminar all day came over to scavenge my onion rings (they were complaining they hadn't had a hot meal all day).
Tryst - Carronade IPA | 4.20 | | Not sure if this is still the same barrel as last Wednesday but it is still tasting good. Bursting with grapefruit hops. |
Mauldons - Cuckoo Bitter | 4.30 | Not Tried
Cairngorm - White Lady | 4.70 | Not Tried
Eglesbrech - Grannies Oatmeal Stout | 4.50 | Not Tried
10 Mar 2006 (Charles)

Maple Leaf - Walters Winter Ale | 7.20 | Not Tried
