This pub has just had a refurbishment, and they have done a good job. The buses have increased their frequency too, so it is now much easier to visit by public transport during the day time. This was a lunchtime visit, and although quiet at first the pub soon became very busy with groups of people coming in to eat.

Thursday lunchtime with a few diners. We had a couple of pints and a bacon baguette. There was a fourth beer on sale with a name like Yorkshire Black but I did not make a note of who brewed it, I tried some and found it very chocolaty.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Mad Squirrel (formerly Red Squirrel) - Hopfest3.80Excellent
Shepherd Neame - Special Strong Bitter6.00ExcellentAnother one off recreation of an old brew, this was a truly superb beer using brown, crystal, and pale malts with East Kent Golding hops.

Friday lunchtime, well the evening buses have been withdrawn so I can only do this pub during the day time. The pub was busy with diners enjoying their fish and chips. It was pleasing to see two beers from Sheps Pilot Brewery on sale together, and I was told that Strong Ale is in the cellar waiting to go on soon.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - The Salutation4.00ExcellentBrewed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Salutation in Sandwich, a good full bodied malty ale.

Sunday lunch time and busy with diners. The landlord and landlady took time out to talk with me about beer. I was told that Salutation Ale is in the cellar for when the Brilliant Pale Ale runs out.

Just after 11:30am on a Wednesday morning as the pub was opening, it did not take long for the pub to become quite busy with both drinkers and diners.
BeerABVScoreNotes
Shepherd Neame - India Pale Ale6.10ExcellentA real IPA from Sheps, absolutely magnificent hoppy ale. This was from their Pilot Brewery and supplied to just ten pubs. Get it while you can because when this has gone there will be no more in cask form, future brews will be bottled for export only.
