Cotleigh - Red Nose Reinbeer | 4.50 | | Now shown as 4.5%. Ruby red, laden with crystal malt to give a cloying and rather bitter taste. Little hop flavour in this. Not an improvement in my opinion. My score 12/20. |
30 Oct 2010 (Alenomore)
2230 and hot foot from Brum. Four new festival ales on/required here, but, with only 30 minutes until the second from last train departs, decisions, decisions...

10 Jul 2010 (Pedro)
Afternoon
Vale - Grumpling Old Premium Ale | 4.60 | | Not to my taste after heavy session at Fullers brewery, this was unappetising and I left it |
21 Aug 2009 (Martin the Mildman)
Elgood's - Mad Dog | 4.40 | | Dry taste of apples suggest this was served a little too early. Slightly hazy too. My score 14/20. |
Wood's - Summer That | 3.90 | | Some citrus hop but mainly just a dull bitter taste, rather hazy too so probably not very well looked after here. My score 14/20 |
19 Apr 2009 (Ian)
Just stopped off for breakfast and to see if any of the festival beers were on which I hadn't had, and was pleased to find two of them.
Scottish & Newcastle - John Smith's Heritage Ale | 4.20 | | Deepish brown colour, thin beige head. It’s a slightly low flavoured bitter, nothing wrong with it, just no real flavour or hop. |
Weltons - Ray's Rauchbeer | 4.50 | | Copper colour, thin white head. Vague ashtray on aroma, bit of menthol too. Awful. Thin in mouth with just nasty flavours, had to leave it. |
29 Mar 2008 (Ian)
Odd little pub. Not very big for a Wetherspoons and only a stone's throw from Victoria station.
Harviestoun - Old Engine Oil | 6.00 | | I had this on cask at the old strength in the Guildford Arma, Edinburgh and it was one of the beers of the RBESG 07 for me, so I was interested in this. Black, ruby hints, thin tan head. This is still a tasty beer with smoky charcoal and tarry malts. Good fullness in mouth. Aroma is excellent. Good fruit in mouth. Decent stinging finish. Rounded juicy charcoal in mouth. Excellent. |
Nethergate (was Nethergate Growler for a while then name reverted) - April Fool | 4.10 | | Copper colour with a slight haze and thin beige head. Slightly sweet juicy bitter, with earthy hop. Rather a good fruity/floral/juicy bitter. I like it, good solid 4.1% bitter. |
JW Lees (see also Lees) - Brewer's Dark | 3.50 | | Very dark ruby, thin beige head. Decent tasty dark mild, some roasted malt, bit toasty, some sting on the tongue at end. Aroma of dark syrup and fruit that is quite attractive. Rather a good mild, with this subtle sting finish. |
10 Nov 2007 (Ian)
Weird day trying to get round as many Wetherspoon's pubs in London in one day whilst the Lord Mayor's Show was on. Public transport was right up the swany. OK pub that was pretty busy at 12.00.
Everards (see entries against Joule's & Robinsons whilst its new brewery was being built) - Terra Firma | 4.50 | | Copper colour with thick beige head. Fruity bitter. Nice malts. Bit of caramel. Fruity standard bitter, great condition. Nice and creamy with tart dry finish. |
28 Apr 2007 (Ian)
Mid Saturday afternoon and there was a curious mix of JDW drinkers, tourists and passers by. Handy for Victoria stations.
Titanic - Steerage (superseded by 3.8% version - see separate entry) | 3.50 | | Pale gold with thin lasting off white head. Earthy hop, golden bitter. For a 3.5% beer, I think they've done a good job, not the best beer in the world maybe. Some yeast and lovely lemon curd, grapefruit aroma, tad flabby in mouth, good lemon curdy dry finish. Impressed especially the citrus flavours are good. |
Wickwar - Premium Spring Ale | 3.80 | | Decent hoppy finish, good condition, good wideish mouthfeel on this light English bitter. Excellent lacing. Very light bitter, but lemon citrus is good. |
Greene King - Morland Tanner's Jack | 4.40 | | Amber with thin beige head. Minerally, tangerine, yeasty bitter, confused, muddy. Tangerine flavours are fine. Bit muddled but fruity malt is decent. |
Caledonian - Top Banana | 4.10 | | Gold with thin white head. Artificial bubble gum aroma, some banana. This is pants. Not pants pants, but pants. It's a very unspecific bitter with enormously faint banana. Doesn't work as a beer. Though there are no off flavours. |
