05 Nov 2012 (Stephen Harris)
This pub is now renamed the Alehouse, although otherwise unchanged. I passed a pleasant hour here with Kevin and Robert, between 6 and 7pm – at which time it was pretty busy.
Sherfield Village - Solo Green Bullet | 4.30 | | Golden in colour, with a bitter, leafy, vegetal hop taste. Served a bit green unfortunately, but still good. |
Brecon - Genesis 1:iv Omnia | 4.30 | | Amber bitter with plenty going on. Complex malt mix and plenty of hop. |
Tring - The Sapper | 4.30 | | Straightforward quaffing bitter. |
Ramsgate Brewery (Gadds') - DogBolter Dark Porter | 5.60 | Not Tried
West Berkshire - Maggs' Magnificent Mild | 3.80 | Not Tried
West Berkshire - Old Father Thames | 3.40 | Not Tried
31 Dec 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Not too busy, managed to get one of the small booths towards the rear.
West Berkshire - Holly Cutter | 4.10 | | Very bitter amber beer, uncharacteristically bitter for this brewery. Not much malt character and a very dry, bitter finish. My score 13/20. |
29 Oct 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Cottage - Lord Nelson | 4.20 | | Sweet and malty with toffee and caramel notes. Little hoppiness but some fruit in the finish. My score 15/20. |
Hammerpot - American Pale | 5.20 | | Strong pale ale with a bitter hop character. Some citrus notes but also sharper piney flavours. Very dry finish. My score 14/20. |
11 Jun 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
Busy late on a Saturday afternoon.
Leadmill - Susie Q | 5.40 | | Strong pale bitter with a strange smoked malt flavour. Some hoppiness present. My score 14/20. |
23 Mar 2011 (Martin the Mildman)
West Berkshire - WB-40 | 4.00 | | Brew for 40th anniversary of CAMRA. Dark brown in colour with a full bodied malty flavour and a little hop in the finish. My score 16/20. |
17 Dec 2010 (Martin the Mildman)
West Berkshire - King Alfred's Draught | 4.30 | | Deep ruby bitter with a sweetish balance of hop and malt. My score 15/20. |
Hepworth - Ridgeway Reindeer Droppings | 4.70 | | Hoppy and bitter strong amber bitter. Fairly crisp and sharpish hop flavour. My score 14/20. |

06 Mar 2010 (Martin the Mildman)
Lakeland (formerly Stringers) - Black Flag | 8.80 | | Very powerful Russian Imperial Stout style beer. Lots of roast malt and a real alcoholic kick to this. My score 16/20. |
Gwaun Valley - Light | 4.00 | | First appearance for me of this new Welsh micro. A well balanced light ale with a dryish finish. My score 15/20. |
Preseli - Baggywrinkle | 4.50 | | Another new Welsh micro, this one not so good with a rather bitter beer without much real flavour to it. My score 12/20. |
